- Just to clear some things... I shaded the pants the way i did to create a new texture because I noticed that everything was meshing together too much... this is more of a stepping stone for further pictures that are shaded, and at the time I didn't have a soft pencil. Although... I really should bring those with me more...

- I really like the face. And as far as shading goes I think you did a good job. Obviously softer pencils are preferred for shading, but if you know how to use it a mechanical pencil will do just fine. I recommend using it more for lines and then using a soft pencil to shade, and using your finger or a piece of tissue or something to smooth the led in.

- yeah i use mechanical pencils for shading too and i dont scratch the paper like at all. the shading should be more evened out on the pants though.
