When my Oma was still alive
She was bitter
she was mean
maybe it was the affect of living in east Germany during WWII
who knows, I don’t
She liked me so we were sneaky together
I would hide under our bathroom sink and wait patiently for the signal
She would tap three times if its ok and one tap for trouble
After I heard a familiar TAP, TAP, TAP
I'd crawl out and hug my Oma
She always smelled of bread
She would grab my hand and
we would sneak into the kitchen
open the door to the freezer
the cold air that tickled our toes and bare legs would make us shiver
Once the door was open
We had to be very quiet or my mom would come and bite our heads off
I got the spoons and was very, very quiet about it
she grabbed the ice cream and smiled at me
She always smiled at me when we were sneaky
She of course would go up the stairs first
and i would wait until she was at the top and then i would go after her
We would go into her room close the door
We would turn on the TV so they couldn’t hear us
she would tell me stories from her childhood in Germany
The good and bad
my Oma can be described at a sweet and sour person
Bitter from her days in Germany and how she missed it
when she was sweet it was very sweet
Maybe its from all that ice cream we ate
Who knows I don’t.
