It seemed like an ordinary day. Except this day was far from an ordinary day; it was the last day of school at Franklin High School. It’s about 5:00 am and a house not far away is filled with action. Even though the residents are peaceful and only a family of three, everyone is doing their stuff at the same time. The father, Joshua Aims, grabs about seven cereal bars before heading out. He usually wears a blue button down shirt under a black coat wearing a blue tie crafted out of metal silk (Created by his son ) he has black hair neatly trimmed and combed. he is a proud man who carried a thin black briefcase containing his Bible, a cell phone, his laptop, and some other files from work. he gives a fast pace towards his Toyota Avalon, he quickly speeds off to his early morning commute. The mom, Helen Aims, watches him through the window every day, she is wearing black pants and a blue striped button-down shirt, and she gives a little prayer, then a voice behind her shouts
“Mom!” said the voice.
“Oh!’ she exclaims as she turns around to see smoke beginning to billow out of the toaster.
“Not again, oh LORD, not again.” she mumbles as she shove the pan she was holding on the fryer.
She quickly pulls the plug to the toaster, whipped around and grabbed some pot holders that she uses to pull the burnt pop-tarts from the toaster.
“Time!” shouts a boy behind her. The boy had short black hair some acne and was wearing some ripped jeans and a grey turtle neck that was worn down and had oil stains on it. Yup that’s the son Alex Aims.
“What?” asked the mom in confusion?
“Well you put out the smoke and rescued the pop-tarts in only 6.35 seconds.” said Alex.
“You should be proud of yourself that’s a new record and besides the pop-tart isn’t nearly as burnt as usual.” Alex says with a look of anticipation on his face. But the mom only groaned:
“I know and I’m sorry that every pop-tart I make is practically incinerated in this toaster.”
“Then just get a new one.” Alex says while scooping some Cheerios into his mouth.
“I’ve tried so hard but I can’t find one, much less a better one.” replied the mom
“You don’t need to look anymore” said Alex with a grin.
Mrs. Aims looked at him confused, as Alex stepped off of the stool he was sitting on and reviled to his mother a black rusty toaster wit a red ribbon on it. It was a perfect semi-circle with two slits in the top. Mrs. Aims put her hands over her mouth and sighed a sigh of joy.
“Happy Birthday, Mommy.” said Alex beaming brightly
His mom began to tear up as she walked around the counter that was separating the two. She hugged and kissed him and said
“What’s the original?” slowly easing off of the constricting hug, but still smiling.
“There wasn’t one I made this one from scratch.” said Alex pointing at the toaster
“okay, then show me how it works.” asked the mom.
Alex plugged in the toaster and it lit up blue with black panels, it looked like a blue circuit board. Alex grabbed a piece of bread from his little breakfast on the counter and put it the toaster.
“Just press this button and it comes out perfect.” Alex says to his mother as kindly.
Reluctant the mom pushed a panel marked StARt and the blue turned red for about five seconds and then a piece of toast shot out of the top. Both mother and Son reach to grab the toast, but since Mrs. Aims is taller than Alex by about a foot and a half she caught it first, Alex’s face showed he was a little upset about not being tall enough to reach the toast, but his mom didn’t notice because she was too busy shouting
“WOW! IT WORKS! ANOTHER GREAT INVENTION! HA HA!”
At that moment some loud beeping was emitted from the microwave
“I gotta hustle if I’m want to make the bus!” yelled Alex as he picked up a small backpack
He then ran to the next room and grabbed a duffle bag and some metal boot like shoes he ran out the door yelling
“I’m taking the “Speed Socks!”
His mother didn’t have time to respond before Alex was gone. Alex burst out the door just in time to look down the road and see that the bus had already come and is now dissipating into the distance. Alex immediately dropped his heavy metal “Speed Socks”
and put his shoes and all in it them and buckled them tightly. His mom burst out the door and stood next to him looking at him as he fastened his belongings to himself as if he was about to sprint away. His mom said to him.
“You can’t take the “Speed Socks”! You said they where experimental and highly dangerous!”
Alex turned to his mother and said calmly
“I know I did.”
Helen stood staring at him with a face filled with confusion. Alex leaned forward as if about to start off a marathon. His breath is steady, his face is emotionless, and his mind at peace.
“Stand back mom” Alex said calmly.
Helen Aims slowly backed into the house, then raced to a window. Alex groaned and prayed
“Lord, give me faith and courage, and Lord, Preserve me. in the power of your name”
He stood still, and calmly and slowly said
“Amen”
He sprinted off on his tip toes, the “Speed Socks” blue circuitry alike the toasters grew lighter and lighter as if they where charging up. High pitch buzzing emitted from the metal boot like shoes, Alex huffed as he continued to sprint with his body leaning forward. Alex’s “Speed Socks” became filled with blue light; the high pitched noise now became too high to hear. A burst of blue light sparked beneath the boot like shoes and Alex was propelled forward. Alex went from going 2 Miles per hour to 63 miles per hour. Alex was overwhelmed. He now knew that he should turn them off. Only he can’t. Alex decided that since the “Speed Socks” create a pulse that propels it forward it can also propel backwards. By this time Alex was next to the bus. Alex jumped and pushed his feet in front of him causing the “Speed Socks” to push him into the air. Alex was launched on top of the bus. The bus immediately stopped thus propelling Alex forward off of the roof of the bus and onto the street ahead of it. Alex’s duffel bag flew off of his shoulder. Alex groaned in pain as he got up and grabbed his duffel bag off of the ground where it had fallen, he threw the sling of the duffel bag up and put it on his shoulder. At this moment the bus driver got out to assist Alex into the bus. Alex only shook his head as he leaned on his knees and cringing from the pain, he said to the bus driver.
“Hey I tried an experimental prototype; I brought this on myself, if I have pain inflicted on me while experimenting, it is my fault not yours”
Alex tilted his head back and took some deep breaths. The bus driver only looked at him strangely. Alex limped onto the bus with the bus driver behind him; the bus driver was mumbling something about how reckless kids where these days. Alex limped to the back, one row at a time; each row had at least one pair of eyes staring at him showing no emotion. He came to his routine seat, he sat alone and in the most worn bench of all, it squeaks when the bus turns right it has a tear in the leather that’s so big that Alex uses it to hold his lunch or sometimes even his money, and whenever the driver hits the gas the bench rattles. Alex put his bags down carefully; he sat down slowly putting his “Speed Socks” onto his lap. He began to examine them, by turning them and running his fingers along them to determine any damage.
