• Chapter 4

Cara opened her eyes to a familiar place. It was her classroom. She heard someone calling her and turned around to see a girl standing at the teacher's desk. The voice was familiar but she couldn't tell who it was. As she walked towards the person she began to recognize her and froze up. It was Naomi.

Something wasn't right about Naomi though--her hair was longer and wilder and she was wearing a black and purple dress when usually she'd be in jeans and a tshirt. Naomi held up one hand and beckoned Cara to come to her, smiling as Cara took another step towards her.

"Stop, Cara! It's not Naomi!" Zach yelled as he came out of nowhere and pulled her back towards the classroom exit. She could see he was terrified and holding a sword. She knew he was good at martial arts but to use a sword against a friend was way too much, even if they did fight every day.

"Don't be an idiot. That's our Naomi, for heaven's sake!" she said pulling against Zach's grasp. "Keep your sword aside, please."

"Cara, I'm telling you the truth! That thing ISN'T Naomi," he whispered and yanked her by the waist back towards the door. "Now run, Cara, run!"

She looked behind Zach and saw black wings growing from Naomi's back with purple shapes on them. It was beautiful yet somehow terrifying. They turned to bright, colorful butterfly wings as Naomi launched herself towards Cara and Zach. Seeing Cara's shocked face, Zach turned to see Naomi attacking and stabbed her in the heart as Naomi's sharp nails pierced Zach's heart.

"Noooo". Cara screamed, wrenching upright out of her bed. She was disoriented and looked around. She is in her room.

"Cara? Whats wrong?" Helen who was sleeping beside her, woken up hearing her cousin screamed. She was still drowsy.

"It's nothing, just having a bad dream. Now go back to sleep," Cara whispered.

Helen fell back to sleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. Cara pulled her watch from the table and saw it was already 5 AM. She decided to to have something to drink in the kitchen and pulled herself off the bed, taking her small journal with an attached pen with her.

Cara held her breath, seeing Helen stir. A dozen little expressions flitted across her face as the dream played itself out then she settled back into sleep. Cara gently brushed a stray strand of hair away from Helen's face.

She trotted down the stairs quietly, going to the kitchen and pouring herself a glass of warm water and sipping it slowly then put it on the table. Cara tried to remember what the dream was about and wrote down what she could recall.

A few days ago she dreamed about a winged girl, near her age who was pleading for her help though she couldn't remember why she needed help. She couldn't really hear what the girl was saying anyway and then she saw her consumed in a dark fog and screaming.

It wasn't the first weird dream she'd had but they seemed to be getting weirder these days. They always revolved around beautiful girls with butterfly, bat or angelic wings. She couldn't remember much but she tried to put down every detail in her journal.

Most of the dreams were glimpses of the future which Cara guessed was her gift. She still wasn't able to tell what were real predictions or when they would happen but it had helped her a few times with pop quiz answers or an exam. Cara yawned and went back upstairs to her bed. Whatever it was, she could talk to Naomi and Zach about it tomorrow morning.
