“Jorkun, wake up!” Ignoring the voice, Jorkun rolled over, trying to fall back asleep, and fell out of bed. The sudden sensation of falling woke him up faster than he had ever woken up before. Getting up off of the floor, he stared around him, disoriented. He had expecting to find himself in his room back at home with his brother standing at the doorway, arms akimbo and impatient. What he found instead was the dingy little hut he had fallen asleep in.
He stood there for a moment, wondering who it was that had called his name. Come to think of it, the voice was far too high-pitched to be his brother’s. Looking around, he tried to spot what had woken him. Not seeing anyone, he walked over to the window and looked out, wondering what exactly he would do next.
“This is no time to be looking out windows!”
Whirling around, he looked for the source of the voice. Not seeing one, he called out, “Who’s there? Show yourself!”
There was an exasperated sigh, “Use your eyes! I’m right here in front of you!” The voice sounded a bit annoyed, and a little bit amused.
Jorkun was at a loss, No matter where he looked, he couldn’t see anyone. After about a minute, he began to think he was going crazy. Taking a step forward he heard a shriek followed by an angry exclamation, “Hey! Watch where you’re going you great lump! You almost stepped on me!”
Looking down, Jorkun saw, for the first time, what had been talking to him. It was a small pink….thing, no bigger than his hand. Squatting down next to it, he said quietly, “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t see you there. I was looking for someone….well, someone bigger, like me.”
“Hmmph,” came the reply, “If size were all that mattered, there wouldn’t be any humans left. As it is, you were hard enough to find. The last known human was here thirty years ago and he was much more open to the fact that sometimes the best things in life are small.”
Jorkun was surprised by the little fluffy thing’s words, “That isn’t possible. I’m not thirty years old.”
“Well obviously, but what does that have to do with anything eh? What, do you think that the world started when you were born?”
“Well actually…” began Jorkun.
“You’re kidding right?” asked the yellow puff, “I don’t have time for this! Now, come with me and I will show you why you are here in the first place.” Turning swiftly, it bounded over to a trapdoor that Jorkun had failed to notice, opened it, and jumped in.
A few seconds later it popped back out and yelled, “Are you coming or not?” Nodding mutely, Jorkun walked over and followed his new companion through the trapdoor.
