• I stormed into my house, with John behind me, seeming confused and slightly entertained.
"Mom! Dad!" I screamed into the house, knowing they would hear and come. I looked back at John. I hadn't told him anything, I'd just said that he needed to come here with me. On the way back here, he had tried to ask me questions but i wouldn't answer. Soon he just gave up and became silent. By the look he was giving me, i knew that he was beggining to believe that i was insane.
my parents walked into the room, expecting the usual; i found a new animal, i needed their help on something, whatever. But they didn't see the usual, they saw a 6 foot tall boy behind their perfect little blissfuly unaware child. I had a scowl on my face, something i had never shown to my parents. My mother stepped backwards and looked frightened. My father had a stealy look on his face, and i knew i was in for it. Before they could say anything, i started shouting.
"How dare you lie to me?! How dare you tell me, for all those years, that there was not anyone else! How could you ever expect me not to find out that the whole time you were fibbing?" i screamed as loud as i could at them, and i could tell I had upset my mother.
"Don't you use that tone of-"
"Tone of voice? TONE OF VOICE? I have every rite to use this tone of voice with you! You LIED to me!" i shouted in my fathers face. He lapsed into silence, and John cleared his throat.
"Uhh... should i, um, go?" he asked quietly. I reached back and held on to his muscley arm, momentarly empressed, but held tightly.
"Stay," I said, and he didn't say anything, so i didn't think he was going anywhere.
"Sharon, we never wanted you to grow up in that world! It isn't right! It's corrupt! We wanted you to grow up the way children should-" my mother began, but i had had enough. I put up my hand and she shut up. The next thing i did does not make sense to me now, but it did then.
"I'm leaving. I will come back when i am calm enough to reason with you rationaly" i said in a calm voice. I nodded to myself, turned around, and pulled John through the door before they could stop me. As soon as we were off the yard and out into the woods a little, i turned to face John.
"Would you be so kind as to show me the way into the nearest settlement? And then you will not have to deal with me, i swear" i said quietly, looking him straight in the eyes. He looked at my quizzicaly, but nodded and started on the way down the hill. I followed, but then he stopped so suddenly that i bumped into him yet again.
"What did they lie to you about?" he asked, turning around to face me. I sighed.
"They told me there were no others, just us. They made me believe that we were the last ones, and there would be no more, and now i know that it was all just a lie. You are the first boy i have met" I said.
"Whoa, are you josh-ing me?" he asked. I tilted my head slightly sideways.
"Josh-ing? I know of no one by that name" I said, confused. He laughed, a little like he was astonished.
"It means kidding. Wow, you really have been brainwashed" he shook his head and continued through the forest.
"Brainwashed? But no one has 'washed my brain'" i said. He laughed again, and this time it sounded like he may have been making fun of me.
"Don't take everything so seriously, its a figure of speech," he said. I still did not understand, but i got the sense that this boy thought i was very dim and so i pretended i understood.
"Ah, i see. I am not so dim as i am not able to learn, you know" i said, a little irritably.
"Dim? Did you just say dim?" he laughed yet again, and i frowned at his back.
"Oh, shut up, boy, I'm done speaking for now" and we both were silent the rest of the way down the mountain that had been my home for my whole life, and into a whole new world.
