• Runaway Elen

    *Chapter 1*

Elen stood in the doorway of her father's old apartment. The apartment was so old you could barely hear the paint chipping off the walls. Elen sighed. She thought this had to be the worst apartment in town. Not the way Elen's father had hoped it would turn out. Not the way Elen's mother planned for her daughter before she passed away. Elen sighed deeply, grabbed her coat, and headed off to her father's new job, the bakery.
The fall leaves trembled across the concrete sidewalk. She could feel a breeze through her coat. "I can't believe father didn't want to stay on the farmlands! But of course we had to move to this stupid city!" Elen mumbled to herself. The wind started to blow so fiercely that Elen's long, dark brown hair was blowing everywhere.
"Hello, Elen, my darling." her father said as if he were charmed in a way Elen didn't understand. Close to tears, as she was, she managed to say bravely without any hesitation, "Father! I'm sorry but I must go to the farmlands! I do not belong here! I can't survive in that rundown apartment any longer!" She couldn't hold in her tears when she said, "I'm sorry, Father, I truly am."
Her father had no response after that. After all that tension Elen fled back to the apartment, jumped on her bed and cried these words into her pillow: "Mother now I don't know if I made the right decision! I want to live on the farmlands where I grew up, but if I leave who will take care of me?" Then it hit her.
