Hidden Fangs
Chapter 1.
“ Come on Aves, high school won’t be that different. This one just has harder work.” Jake placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. Maybe he was right, Brooksdale High School probably wasn’t too different from Middleview High School. I mean they’re both in Tennessee. “Agh.” I shook my head. School used to be my strong point…until the cliques started. Then everything went downhill. Oh, maybe I should explain my life so far before we get into the school drama. I’m Avery Van Horn. I’m going to start at a new high school today, fun huh? My parents died when I was only 4 years old. My mom died in a car crash and my dad went missing for a week but then was found in a river. I’ve been on my own for a few years now.
Not the best life for me since I have no one in my family around. I only have Jake, my best friend since I was born, and my Siberian husky pup named Del Zotto. Maybe the effect of not having a family messed up my education. Who knows? Only person I can trust is Jake, even thought I’m hiding my biggest secret from him. What is the secret? I’m a vampire. I would tell Jake but I don’t know how he would take it. He might now because there were incidents where he saw my fangs come out, but he thought it was normal.
“ School is going to suck like it always does and you know it Jake.” I shook his hand off of my shoulder. “ Aw, come on Avery, you never know what might happen, you may meet a new friend or.. boyfriend” Jake gulped slowly. Why did he seem so weird when a different guy was mentioned? Oh well. Must be a guy thing. “ Whatever Jake, lets get this over with.”
Chapter 2
“ Locker 160, where are you!? Stupid lockers.” As soon as I found it, I saw him. In front of the locker next to mine stood a blue-eyed brunette, holding a hockey stick in one hand and a Calculus textbook in the other. “ Oh my god.” I quickly brushed off my jeans and shirt and walked over, trying to ignore him. “Hey, I think you dropped this.” there in the guy’s hand was my notebook. “Oh! Thanks. It must’ve slipped from under my arm.” I tried to sound casual s I took the book. “ It’s cool, I’m River, River Sanchez. And you are?” River tossed his head to the side, his gorgeous hair flopping over one eye. “ Uh, I’m Horn Avery Van.” No!! I just messed up my own name!? what was wrong with me!!!??? River laughed. “ Well then, that’s interesting Miss Horn Van.” “What? No! I meant Avery Van Horn.” I let out a nervous sigh. “ It’s cool, don’t worry, we all mess up sometimes.” he closed his locker and smiled. “Guess I’ll see you around Avery.” “Yeah, bye.” Whoa. Did that just happen?
“ Hey Jake!” as soon as I was about to sit next to him a blur of blond hair went passed me. “ Hi, I’m Kelsey, head cheerleader here at Brooksdale.” Kelsey leaned as close to Jake as she possibly could, knowing that I was about t take that seat where she now sat. “ Uh.. hi?” Jake tried to lean away but there was nowhere for him to go. He gave me an apologetic look and I replied with a shrug and headed to the seat in the back. “Hey again Horn Van.” “Huh? Oh! River, hi. I didn’t know you had this class next.” Okay, was it me or was my heart beating faster than ever right now? “ I should’ve asked what you had next, we could’ve walked together.” River smiled the same smile that melted my heart. “Yeah. We could’ve.”
“Hey, I heard we have a project already for this class and we have to have a partner for it. Is that true?” I tucked a strand of golden brown hair behind my ear. “ Yep, we always get a starting project in each class where we have to work with a partner. Maybe we could work together.” “Oh, I would but I’m working with my friend Jake. He’s the one that just agreed to work with Kelsey.”
Chapter 3
“Wait, What!?” I turned and it was true, Jake agreed to do the projects with Kelsey! That jerk!!!!! “Oh, Kelsey, the head cheerleader. Big deal. She’s just trying to forget about me.” River flipped to a new page in his notebook. “ You went out with her?” “ Yeah, worst thing I ever did.” Wow. She was using Jake? That jerk! Both of them are jerks! Argh. “ Well then, I guess we could work together” “Cool, after school meet me at my locker and we’ll go somewhere to work on the project.” River smiled then turned to his books and didn’t say another word.
“ So, where do you want to go for this project?” River flicked a leaf off his car roof and smiled. Guys and their cars, go figure. “Well, I have a lot of books in my house.” Most were books from my dad since he was a history teacher. “Well then lead the way there Horn Van!” River got in the car, started it up, and we were off. I never went into my dad’s office before, that’s where all of his books were, but that would change today.
