The pine trees were green while the other trees changed to orange, yellow, brown and red. The air was starting to get cold and my fur started to grow thick. My bangs started to go into my eye. I was playing by myself like always. I had no friends. Mostly because they all shied away from me. Compared to the rest of the fooxes in our village, I was short. The kits could have easily thrown me in the mud pit, but they never come near me. Even my mother and sister struggled with being close to me. I hadn't realized it until I looked at what I had drawn in the damp mud right next to me. My stomach knotted from fear. I gulped as the scene played in my head.
In the vision I was running into the forest. The icy rain was dripping on me. I shook my head to stop the vision. I didn't want to see this. I quickly took my paw and wiped out the picture. I looked to the north and a gust of wind blew into my face. I looked up at the sky. There was a giant cloud with lightning sparks inside it. I sprinted home; my eyes were wide with tears streaming down my face. I got to the den entrance right as it began to rain. My mum and sister were in the kitchen. I tried to ignore them but it's hard to ignore people when you just want to have a friend.
"Are you crying again Jay?” my mother quickly asked.
"No. It's just the, um, rain. I'm fine. Really", I quickly answered. I didn't want to make them talk to me. It was hard for them to live with me. My mum just nodded and I went to my room. Once in my room I tuned my ears to hear farther out. I got to two miles away when I heard the faint paw thuds on the ground. I concentrated on their minds to see what they were after. It didn't take much as their minds weren't protected. I saw a vivid picture of what they were hunting and why they were hunting it. It was an all black foox kit that had white legs with white swirls coming out of them. The foox kit had a white tail tip, white chest, and a white circle around her right eye. This kit had beautiful brown eyes. I wouldn't have been concerned except that kit was me. I could tell from the makings. I was a reject for my swirls and right eye. I then looked into their minds and saw what would happen if I were to escape. The wind would be blowing from the north. There was a white blur and then darkness. When I came back into reality I heard my sister talking to my mother.
"Mom! I will never find a mate while Jay is around! All of the fooxes are afraid of me because of her! She is useless! We can't tell her what to do without her weird abilities breaking something or even someone! What are we going to do with her, Mom", my sister had told my mother. This is exactly why I wasn't near my family.
"Moon, we can't just get rid of her... she's your sister and my daughter. I would get rid of her the second I could but I can't. You very well know that", my mother had to explain.
I had enough. I would just run away. Before I could I needed to see why those things were after me. I went to my shelf and took out my history book. After a few minutes I found them. They were called the "Ambar Kános (ahm-bar kah-no s)" or in English the Fate Commanders. They have been around since the beginning of time. They were created to kill the chosen ones. I was what they called one of the chosen ones. If they failed at catching and brutally killing me I would be turned into a fooxie. If I were to be made into a fooxie, I would be renamed (unless wished otherwise) by the direction the winds were coming from. All of this seemed so magical that I could barely believe it. I was daydreaming until I started to feel the vibrations of the ground caused by the Ambar Kános. I realized I wanted to live so I got my blankie and my hand made doll. I started to hear the thump thump-thump thump of the paws. I grabbed my things and went out the back exit of out den. I stopped to make sure I had everything. All of a sudden I heard a snap. It started poring rain as a lightning bolt struck one of the above ground dens. It bursted into flames. On the other side of the clearing I saw the shadows. I grabbed my things and ran towards the forest at the fastest speed possible. Icy rain droplets hit my face and stung my eyes. I bounded into the forest. I heard them gaining on me and I knew I had no chance. I picked up some speed and leapt over a log that I thought was small. My front paw had hit it, causing me to yelp, loose my stuff, flip, fall, hit my head on a rock, and fly into a shrub where I passed out. Before I passed out I heard sniffing. At least, I think it was sniffing. A few seconds after the noise it went black and soundless.
I don't know how long I was blacked out for. I'm guessing it was a few days. There was dried blood on the left side of my head. I saw the healing river only a few yards away. I quickly leapt into it. In that second my broken leg, ribs, and cuts were healed. I jumped out and shook the extra water off. I knew that my village would be happy I hadn't returned but something felt wrong. I decided to go home and see what was going on. I found my blankie and doll but my book was torn to shreds. I gathered what I needed and walked back to the village. The forest was so... empty. It was worse than empty. The closer I got to the village the more it died. Finally I reached the village clearing. Only, there wasn't anything I remembered. The mud areas were dried up, the huts burnt, the grass gone, the trees lining the clearing were burnt to a crisp, and the smell of burning flesh and fur filled the air. I took a step forward and fell a little. I looked at what I was standing in. It was a paw print the size of two of me. Then I saw what happened here. I saw all the panic and how quickly it ended for everyone. I shook my head when I saw mothers face. I didn't need to know the whole story. I took one last survey of the clearing to make sure wasn't anything left. I scurried off into the forest. Tears started to fill my eyes. I didn't care where I went or what I ran into. I ran as fast as I could through the forest, blind from my tears. I continually tripped over small rocks, tree roots, bushes, and my own feet. My legs were filthy and covered in blood. I reached a small field. I stopped and blinked the tears out of my eyes. It was the most beautiful place I had ever seen. The grass was just above my paws. There was a small lake near with a little dock. The water sparkled in the moonlight. I took a deep breath to smell the air. It smelled like honey, roses, strawberries, and oranges. All over the field was flowers of very color and type. I pointed my head towards the moon, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. A wind from the south blew towards the north, right into my face. I sighed. I walked to the water to wash my legs. The blood and dirt disappeared almost instantly. I walked out into the field again. Another gust came; ruffling my fur and making the grass tickle my paws. When I opened my eyes I saw a flash of white in the forest. Then a white foox like me came dashing out chasing a wolf. The wolf was coming right towards me. I ran as fast as I could. I got to the forest and tripped. The wolf was biting me and shaking me. I was nearly blacked out when the wolf stopped and screamed out in pain. After a minute it want silent. I was then lifted up and carried back to the field. I felt someone’s cold wet nose press against my neck.
"I'm sorry...” someone said. It was then silent, black, and felt like death.
I woke up in the same spot. I wasn't sure how long I had slept or died or blacked out for. I felt well rested though. I got up, shook out my fur and looked around. It was quiet except for the grass moving in the wind. I walked over to the lake and looked at myself. I was in complete shock. My reflection didn't show except for the glowing circle around my eye. I turned around to find that white foox right in front of me.
"Who are you and what do you want", I asked him quickly.
"I am South Winds. I am a Fooxie much like yourself. I want to know who you are and what way the wind was blowing", he said very politely in a British accent.
"My name is Jay and the wind was blowing to the north", I told him. I looked up into his eyes and I couldn't breathe. They were so stunning. It was like looking into a waterfall on a magical island that didn't exist.
"Follow me", he ordered. I couldn't resist. I followed him without even trying. I kept thinking to myself 'what the hell are you doing?' or 'why are you following this guy?’ I wanted to stop but my legs wouldn't. I simply just followed him while my mind wandered. I thought of what I had turned into, wondered if my mother was happy wherever she was, and what life would have been like if I wasn't this way. After an hour or so we made it to a little wooden shack.
"Hurry", he said, " Get inside before the sun gets over those mountains."
I nodded and walked in. There were two shelves. The highest one was obviously his but the lower one... I walked towards it and sniffed it. Definitely my blankie and doll. It smelled like mother. The sent made me start to cry. I walked over to them and I laid there crying. South Winds didn't bother me at all. All night or... hrm... day, I cried, wondering if they missed me. They probably didn't, if anything they would be mad. I sighed and thought to myself 'they are mad at me. No use in crying over them.' to make the crying stop. After about thirty minutes of whimpering, I fell asleep. At first I didn't dream, but when I did it scared me awake. It was those things that killed my family and tried to kill me. They were running towards me and as the were about to attack, South Winds jumped in front of them and died. I woke up panting and shaking. I stepped outside of my little spot and looked up. There was South Winds, and he was perfectly alive. I laid down and thought. I thought about nothing and everything.
When I woke up it took me a few seconds to realize where I was. I got up, stretched and went to the broken mirror in the corner of the shack. My fur was all ruffled and sticking out in every direction possible. I sighed and tried to fix my fur. My paws were all sweaty, I had tearstains on my fur, my muscles were sore, and there was snot and drool on my chin and around my nose. I looked outside to make sure it was dark enough for me to go out. The sun was just behind the mountains in the west. I quietly slipped out the door. I walked into the forest and listened for a river. I heard the wind, some crickets, some squirrels climbing, and finally the river. It was a quarter mile, maybe more, away. I stretched again and trotted off to find the river. On my way to the River I saw an owl, a few mice, some frogs, and a snake. They didn’t seem to mind me being there, but it still felt wrong. I tried to put that thought in the back of my mind. I thought of how my life had changed in such a short time. I thought of South Winds. Even though I kept my mind busy the thought that something was wrong kept coming back. After about five minutes I reached the river. I took a deep breath and stepped in. It felt so refreshing to be back in the river. It helped ease my mind. After thirty minutes or so I got out. I shook out my fur and started to walk back to the shack. I began daydreaming on my way back. It was of my mother, sister, and I. We were all by the lake during the hottest part of summer just lounging around, but they weren't afraid of me. I actually felt love for once. I felt the ground begin to tremble but I wasn't fast enough. I snapped out of my daydream right as the big black figure rammed into me. I yelped and went flying 45 feet up in the air before getting smashed into a tree branch. I held on to the branch while those things circled below. The branch I was on felt like it was about to give out. I wondered if it would be easier to just jump to my death instead of waiting to fall.
I heard the branch begin to crack and knew I'd die within a few second. I wished I could live but what really was there to live for? I had no friends or family left and nobody ever came near me. I sighed and wished there was some way that I could live and have something to live for. Then the branch broke and I fell in the middle of them on the hard ground. Luckily the branches slowed my fall enough to where I only broke a few ribs. 'Well,' I thought, 'this is the end of me.’ I squeezed my eyes shut when I heard their angry growls. After a few seconds I heard a sound I didn't expect. There was a quick whistling sound above me followed be growls and snarls. I didn't want to listen to it so I just let the dark wash over me.
