The Crystal Rose: A Victorian Romance
Introduction- Speak No Evil
Many years ago an explorer searching the caves of a far off country discovered a treasure unlike any other. Among the treasures discovered were priceless gems, ancient jewelry, and statues carved from solid gold. But the most beautiful and expensive treasure found was a blue rose of the purest crystal.
For many years the crystal rose was rotated around several museums until in 1880 it found it’s way to London. The museum curator, a handsome man in his mid-thirties by the name of Benjamin Abberline, was overjoyed to have the rose featured in his museum. That night a ball would be held for the unveiling of the crystal rose.
Scholars and aristocrats from all over England were in attendance that night. Writers and historians came for the event, aristocrats and government officials came for the publicity. But the guest of honor that night was none other than her majesty, the Queen.
The ball was magnificent. The dancing was great and the conversation was appropriate. All that was left to do would be to unveil the rose. The rose was kept in a glass case in the middle of the ball room, hidden behind a red velvet curtain. The night was going perfect.
Finally it was time. Benjamin Abberline cleaned his glasses, adjusted his coat, and took the stage. The last song ended and the guests surrounded the case. “Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to thank you all for coming out this evening. I am very excited to be able to show this exhibit in my museum. Without farther ado I am honored to unveil to you the famous crystal rose.”
He pulled the rope to drop the curtain. The crowd let out a gasp. Several women screamed and others fainted. The rose was missing. In it’s place was a man, his body twisted and contorted to fit into the small glass box. Blood ran from his mouth and filled the bottom of the box. Scrawled across the outside of the case, written in blood were the words Speak No Evil.
