I spent countless hours wondering how they were made so that both the horizontal and vertical axes could rotate without interfering with each other's motion... I never tried taking it apart, though.

You know, I've wondered that, too. I know on the loose one roughly how it works because... well, it literally explodes if you're going fast and simply apply too much pressure. Fortunately, easy explosion usually means easy put-together. (Granted, it's more difficult to put together.)

When I was looking for a picture of a Rubix Cube to post here there was a picture labeled "Monkey And The Rubix Cube" and it showed a woman trying to pry one apart with a screwdriver. I'm not sure what to make of it, though...
