"You don't know that for sure." Amaya sighed. "Do you know how heartbroken your dad and I would be if something happened to you?" She asked, still looking at him, a little sad he wouldn't even look at her.

"You only bring it up every time, even when most of pranks are perfectly harmless...." Riley said as he rolled his eyes.

"Because your school doesn't think it's harmless." Amaya sighed, a little annoyed that he couldn't seem to understand that. "You want to stay with your friends don't you? If you get in trouble one more time, they're going to kick you out of school, Riley." She murmured.

"School's dumb anyway." Riley said. "I just want my stupid powers to come in already." he muttered as he stared down at the floor.

"No, school is important. And you getting kicked out of school is not going to make your powers come any faster." Amaya said with a dry sigh as she shook her head. "Why do you suddenly hate school Riley?"

"....'cuz I'm a mutate in name only..." Riley muttered quietly as he kept his eyes on the ground. "...and it's a free pass for the jerks at school to make fun of me."

"Riley..." Amaya sighed, pulling him into a hug. "How long have they been making fun of you?" She asked, now knowing what half the issue was.

"...For a while now..." Riley admitted as he let his mom hug him, having lost track of when things started.

"Sweetheart..." She started, trying to figure out what to say. "I know what they're saying hurts...but there's always going to be bullies. I had to deal with bullies when I moved to America and then I dealt with them after I ran away from home. Your dad dealt with bullies when he was traveling around the country, and Cali has been dealing with bullies too. Even if you get your powers, the bullying isn't going to stop. I know you want your powers, but now just isn't the time. They'll come, just be patient..." She told him, still holding him tight.

"But when?? It's not fair, sis already her powers by now! And you guys already had your powers by then! I'm the black sheep around here, the odd man out, one of these things just doesn't belong!" Riley said starting to sniffle in an attempt to not cry.

"I didn't get my powers until I was twelve. And your dad got his later. If Cali was not born when I was in the ring, she probably still wouldn't have had her powers at your age. And you know you belong in our family. I know it's frustrating, but your dad and I felt like we used to not belong with our own families." Amaya told him in a soft tone.

"It's still not fair!" Riley sniffled as he buried his face in his mom's shoulder, now returning the hug. "I just wanna be like you, and dad, and sis!"

"I know you do...but sometimes you just have to be patient..." Amaya murmured, hugging him a little tighter now. "A lot of times life doesn't feel fair...you'll get your powers soon enough though." She said, kissing the top of his head.

"I'm already ten, haven't I been patient enough?" Riley said quickly wiping his eyes with the back of his arm.
Meanwhile, concerned for his son and how Amaya was dealing with him, Adrian had quietly crept up to the door and had been eavesdropping since Amaya teleported in.

"In ten years this isn't going to seem so bad to you. I know you feel like you've been waiting forever, but you've got a whole life time ahead of you." She murmured, rocking with him a little. "Give it another two years or so. I know it seems like it lasts forever, but it doesn't. When you get to my age, you'll wonder where all the time has gone."
