But an iron-fisted dictator is always going to be subject to rebellion. What's to stop a handful of hapless adventurers from finding a way to you and ruining your well-laid plans?
Better to keep the masses under blissful control, like a herd of cows. Keep feeding them their grains, and they'll be more than happy to give you something worth so much more in return.
Absolute media control, ties to the underground crime rings, total monopoly of the industries, carefully planted influences in the Capital, that's how it starts. Then at a word, you have the country on its knees and you control everything, and nobody's the wiser.

Aye but don't you think that people would start to catch onto your schemes after spreading your greedy fingers into things that would give you that absolute power?

That's why you do the whole thing through the manipulation of gluttonous idiots that can never doublecross you or survive on their own. The wonders of voice distortion and ominous-looking masks combined with the right amount of bribery and blackmail can do many things, my friend.

True. True.
But seeing as how I lack the resources at the moment to do so (and I'd much rather tend to my upcoming video game empire), world domination will just have to wait.

I suppose. Well planted subliminal messages within the 'save the world and get the girl' plot could put the world under my size-12 boots easily enough.
I have to make it my business to know how a villainous mind would work. After all, aren't all games remembered for their villains?

There is a saying:
Just as no woman can wear another's ring, no man can wear another's boots.
In other words, it's taboo.
