"Profuse, proud Cleopatra, whose wrong name, / Instead of glory, proved her country's shame, / Of her what worth in stories to be seen, / But that she was a rich Egyptian queen. / Zenobya, potent empress of the East, / And of all these without compare the best, / Whom none but great Aurelius could quell; / Yet for our Queen is no fit parallel." (Bradstreet 192)

"Here sleeps the queen, this is the royal bed / Of th' damask rose, sprung from the white and red, / Whose sweet perfume fills the all-filling air.." (Bradstreet 192)

"Thy blemishes amend, if so I could: / I washed thy face, but more defects I saw, / And rubbing off a spot still made a flaw." (Bradstreet 205)

This part reminded me a bit of how my Mom always tells me that when I was younger, she would always wash my face and thought I had dirt near the tear duct of my eye. I never did. It was just a small freckle I had there.

I wonder if these "blemishes" that she's try to rub off are freckles as well... or something else.

"I, like the Earth this season, mourn in black, / My Sun is gone so far in's zodiac [...] Return, return, sweet Sol, from Capricorn" (Bradstreet 206)

When I read this I have various different thoughts.

At first I thought it was interesting that she talks about zodiac signs. Especially when she's a Puritan at the time. I don't know... it seems like they would've pushed that sort of talk aside as beliefs of Paganism and what not.

The other thought I had was... "Aw... this is sweet" and slightly reminded of Bert's words about Mary Poppins in the song "Jolly Holiday" - that whenever Mary is around the sun shines bright. Sort of a similar occasion with Bradstreet and her husband. And echoes the nursery song or whatever - "You Are My Sunshine."

"I wish my Sun may never set, but burn / Within the Cancer of my glowing breast, / The welcome house of him my dearest guest" (Bradstreet 207)

"Let others know what are my fears / Lest this my brood some harm should catch [...] Some untoward boy at them do fling, / Or whilst allured with bell and glass, / The net be spread, and caught, alas. / Or lest by lime-twigs they be foiled, / Or by some greedy hawks be spoiled" (Bradstreet 209)

It is clear that the "eight birds" in this piece represent the eight children she gave birth to. However, it makes me wonder, what would these other aspects that appear in the part I quote represent in the real world? Or is it just a general reference to the ways of hunting and killing birds in real life?

Well, with what I marked out of just Bradstreet, I definitely will be able to do a CR out of that.

And if Edward Taylor's work is just as interesting, I potentially will be able to do a second CR... which will be nice, if I can do that. :)

*listens to Johnny Cash's Unearthed album* It has his version of "You Are My Sunshine" on it. I ended up deciding to cite it for my CR.
