True Chemistry was based off alchemy.
Alchemy originally started in China in order to find an Elixer of Life.
If the Chinese Alchemists failed they would be executed.
So failure was not an option.
During the time of the chinese alchemists there were only 4 elements and they weren't even really Elements like today. They were Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. Sorta reminds you of Avatar doesn't it.
Many Many years later Europeon monks decided to take up alchemy in order to turn average metals to gold. It wasn't just the monks that took up alchemy but thieves and the poor.
After many failed attempts the monks came up with a myth theory. That was the Philospher's stone. A Stone that could melt anything. The problem they had is if it can melt anything then what kind of container would they put it in?
It was a paradox with in itself.
