I'd guess you would have to examine firstly what is deemed to be a piece of string and secondly how to measure the length of it. So I will start by trying to answer how to measure the length. Your average ruler will give you measurements in inches and centimetres, it will also have a minimum and maximum length. So you could say that the rulers measurements are equal to but no less than zero and equal to but no more than 12 inches (30 centimetres). This rule can then be applied to setting boundaries to get the length of the string.

Next is to look at what we deem to be a piece of string. I would suggest that the answer is to examine it's definition. A ball of wool is still a piece of string, but it is not defined as a piece of string; it is defined as a ball. This can be from 50-60 metres in length, depending upon the type of wool. If the string is cut too small then you end up with something that is defined as a piece of fluff and such like.

So I would think that the answer to how long is a piece of string would be equal to but no less than 1 millimetre and equal to but no longer than 50 metres.

Edited as I forgot to ask a question:

If Superman is faster than a speeding bullet and bullets deflect of his chest, why does he always duck when the gun is thrown at his head??
