It's not that uncommon for a cat to adopt other wildlife offspring when nursing - whether they do it on their own or humans encourage it (i.e. an orphan animal is found).

Dogs will do it too, as will quite a few animals. As long as the young is close enough. Though some will still eat small baby animals they find.
