What are some of your favorite fantasy genre novels?

I'm a writer in the genre and I've been told that it might be good if I read within my intended area. But all I've read since I could remember are contemporary and general fiction novels with one ore two sci-fi ones mixed in. When it comes to fantasy I'm a real dunce, so does anyone have any good authors or recommendations for me to start?

If you'd like some preferences, I like a bit of romance in my stories, I'm not a big fan of magic but I don't mind it either, and I love reading big novels so no book or series is too long for me.

I've also already heard of Terry Pratchett and plan on looking up some of his works. Does anyone else have any other suggestions though? Thanks!

Terry Pratchett is the best author that I could recommend to you. I love his books because they are so funny and out of typical forms. Some people like LOTR writed by Tolkien, but I don't like this serie. I think that "Memory, Sorrow & Thorn" by Tad Williams is much better. First 100 pages are boring, but after them it is much much better :>. If you would like to read something about Vampires, you can always try to search for Ann Rice book. She is a kind of classic (but not for me too). Mix of s-f and fantasy is a book of John Ringo "There will be dragons", very good one. Wierd one, but my favourite "Master and Margaret" by Mikhail Bulgakov. "The year of our war" Steph Swainston is good too. I don't remember others right now ^^'

The series The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. I think that is the best fantasy series I have ever read.

*prods* Listen to this guy, he knows what he's talking about ^.-
Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen are my undisputed favourites, though I think they may fall into the Sci-Fi catagory. (I've seen them in both x.x)

Also, try David Eddging's Elenium and maybe Chris Paolini's Inheritence series (Eragon and Eldest). Tamora Pierce has some fairly nifty books and Artemis Fowel isn't too bad either.

-Jonathan Stroud (check out my siggy!)
-J.K.Rowling (no, duh!)
-Eoin Colfer (Artemis Fowl is pretty good stuff.)
-Cornelia Funke (I only liked Inkheart, everything else she's written is okay.)

Peter David's Sir Apropos of Nothing
Anything by David and Leigh Eddings is good.
A few of Terry Brooks' books are good...
Lord of the Rings? (If you haven't thought of that yet, then... sweatdrop )
Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy
The Once and Future King by TH White is a classic...

I could name more if you need me to. smile

you should read the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. It's a must.

but don't let the length of the books scare you, they are some of the best i've read and the characters are really deep.

btw: i've got all 12 of them.

awsome.
all of those are my all time favorites. though I would add the Pendragon series by D.J MacHale(the only US author whose books are actually good in my opinion) and the Demonata series by Darren Shan (but it is a bit gorey)

Waaaaay to many!

But I would suggest almost everything else everyone's already suggested. Plus, Bruce Coville (Unicorn Chronicles) and Tamora Pierce's various series. Oh! I'll even recommend Stephenie Meyer (though you'll only find two books from her).
