The Shimmer of Light for the Darkened Soul
A short story by ME!
God…today couldn’t be any worse. Everything’s the same around here…what’s going on outside of here?
I sat at my secluded desk out by the window in my boring science class. I was usually considered the outcast considering the simple fact that my clothes weren’t exactly “in” this season.
Can you blame me? I was one of those people that just looked cold all the time. My dark hoodie that everyone swears is black (it’s actually a darkened red, people!) and baggy but secure jeans with my black boots. To make everything down right complete, my natural hair color was black with red roots and had really pale skin. (One question: Do you ever get out, dude?!) The one thing I truly hated too was my eye color; shining emerald green like a vampire on a nightly hunt. Too beautiful to be real.
Average and simple life; good home, parents (who thought it possible?!), small town, boarding school. Sure this place could be interesting. Is what I first thought coming to my new home. For what ever reason possible, my parents would always keep moving me around. Sometimes it seemed like they were hiding something but I just assumed Military since my father was apart of it. But why of all places would you choose a place called “Twilight”?
Yeah it sounds interesting right? Magical and enchanting…WRONG! This is a town where people barely even steal something out of the stores. It’s one of those places where everyone knows everyone; it’s actually quite homey but…I want some goddamn excitement!
“I’m sorry I’m late, Mrs. S! I couldn’t find the classroom!” I turned my head. Standing at the door way was a small girl who barely even looked old enough to be in high school stood in front of the teacher trying to explain.
She wasn’t pretty but not ugly either; just someone who didn’t really want to brush her hair on a daily bases. Her clothes weren’t exactly something you see every day but definitely made you notice her; when you’re wearing red plaid down right EVERYWHERE on your body people are going to notice! She had the casual shirt tied around the waist, Okay that’s doable(he’s a guy! Of course he’s going to look further away from the face as possible!)…long, baggy black shorts with strips of red plaid, That’s actually kind of cool…red and black plaid socks…What the ********? Black high top boots that only came past her ankles.
What time portal did she climb out of? I know my style is out of place but she’s just WAY too much of an outsider than I am! I thought as I lied my head back down into my crossed arms and stared out the window. Only to be turned around by a poke on the shoulder. I turned around, s**t! It was the girl.
“Hey sorry, for waking you but uh…can I borrow your notes? The teacher said that I should just get them from someone else to catch up and you look like you’re finished.” Her voice sounded so nervous. Oh…my god…she even had a hat that was plaid! (Yeah, the school allowed hats, don’t worry.) Her hand was also covered up with a black fingerless glove that ran to her wrist but on the other arm it went up to her elbow. She also had a short sleeve shirt on that was black and black framed glasses.
What else could a guy do? Obviously…I swallowed down my laughter and pulled out my paper and handed it over. “Thanks, I’ll make sure to give them back to you when I’m finished.” She gave a smile.
I just turned my head and turned to the clock. I don’t think she’ll be able to finish. I’ll just tell her to give them back tomorrow. I poked her shoulder this time and she turned to me puzzled, I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out. What the ********?! Finally I managed to choke up a few words into a sentence, “Time…the clock…” if you can call it a sentence. So instead I pointed to the clock and the bell rang.
The girl turned to the clock, “Oh, you were trying to warn me about the time,” she started packing up the papers into her red messenger bag (surprised it’s not plaid?), “Thanks.” And in an instant I was left sitting at my desk dumbfounded and even felt a little red in the face, What the hell just happened?!
Okay let’s get one thing straight: I can talk to girls. Amazingly I’m actually a real lady’s man but I never show any interest and turn every girl down. Also earning my outcast title since every girl was every other girl’s friend. I swear to god they’re like clones! Same styles, hair, perfume, whatever! It was all the same. She was different.
Who the hell was that girl?
I was now heading to lunch the only time I really had to enjoy. Granted I don’t really sit with anyone, considering I’m every guy’s worse enemy, what with all the girls giving me their numbers. CURSE THE ******** EYES OF MINE!! But hey it gives me a chance to at least listen to my music. Yeah it’s not allowed but during the lunch period they actually allowed it. It was ******** sweet. I always got my MP with me too. It’s like a soundtrack to life. A song for every occasion…except for the one coming just around the corner.
Literally; I turned the corner I always took to get to the same table I would always sit at that ironically had only one chair too since all the sexually charged jocks would steal the chairs all around. Now there were two. One was unoccupied the other next to it was taken by the same girl I now sat with in science. “Holy ******** tarts…” I whispered to myself. Please don’t be her, please don’t her…WHO ELSE COULD IT BE WITH ALL THAT PLAID?!
She looked up at me from a book she apparently had. I didn’t even notice until now; too stunned to actually see her again. She greeted me with a wave and a smile that I got once before but I couldn’t do anything; I just stood there. No words would come out even with anger, surprise, or even the joy of seeing that I wasn’t going to be sitting alone. Sadly she just had to say something.
“Hey, what’s up? I didn’t know you sat here but I saw it was empty but just in case someone was sitting here I pulled up a chair from one of the other tables.”
Silence.
“What’s wrong?”
Why can’t I say anything?! I opened my mouth but my voice would not work and my heart seemed to stop working along with my brain. Okay…let’s look at my options: One, sit and talk with the girl. HOW?! I CAN’T TALK!! Two, there’s a window near by and I’m on the second story…There is no good enough reason to commit suicide…and Three, get up the courage to at least walk away!
Her face grew sad and she started putting her book in her messenger bag and got up and started walking, “Sorry, for bothering you,” she said embarrassed.
s**t…what the hell?! My legs started moving on their own, my heart even started racing to catch up, next thing I knew, I was right behind her. My arm reached out and grabbed her arm, “You don’t have to go.” WHAT DID I JUST SAY?!?!?! Okay, you know that this drew people’s attention. She turned around confused and surprised at the same time. My face started heating up even more. I looked to either side of them, EVERYONE was quiet; EVERYONE was staring.
Oh…s**t…I turned back to her; her eyes were shifting too. I panicked, “I know I better place where we can eat, c’mon.” I pulled her away with me; my hand even met with hers. Not even a step past the corner EVERYONE started following us. Sigh…time to run. I gripped her hand tighter and broke into a run, dragging her along almost making her fall down.
Turn left one corner, down two flights of stairs and then a right turn; there was a door there that led to the court yard of the school. I stopped in front of it and just realized what I did. “HOLY ********!! WHAT JUST HAPPENED!!”
She stared over at me, “Um…you kind of ran off with me away from everyone else,” she said with a slightly scared but still confused voice.
I looked down at our conjoined hands. I tensed and turned as red as her plaid and jerked my hand away turning away from her at the same time, “Sorry…I didn’t mean to drag you all the way down here.”
She started turning red too but kept silent and stared in amusement but also had that “lost puppy” look going in her eyes.
“What?”
Quick silence then it was eclipsed with laughter, “You actually started talking to me! That’s one barrier down!”
“Huh?! What do you mean ‘barrier’?!”
“Okay, first question to ask-“
Questions?!
“What’s your name?”
I turned to face her almost annoyed but confused at the same time, “The person who asks for a name must give their name first.”
“Good point-“
She knows that rule?! Only my family and I know that rule here!
“Kit Tsuki’s the name!” She seemed too pleased with her name a little too much; she even strikes a pose for her own introduction with a peace sign held out.
I just stood there baffled…”So…are you a hippie or something?”
“No! I’m just me! I’m not in a class.”
“Uh…huh…okay…I’m still pretty sure you’re a hippie, though. You’re way too happy…like you’re on drugs or something.”
Now she was annoyed, “Excuse me?”
“Oh so you don’t.”
“No…I DON’T.”
“Surprising…” actually maybe I’m just on drugs.
“So c’mon! Tell me your name!”
How can her mood change so quickly?! Is she bipolar?! “Why do you want to know my name?”
“Because…” she looks down at her watch on her wrist, “It’s 2 o’clock. I need to know if you’re the one with the 2 o’clock meeting.”
I couldn’t help it… I had to smile. It was a weird line but it was different, “Heh…Jackal Crescent. Or Jack if you will.”
“Oh…” Kit nodded her head, “yep! You’re the one scheduled for lunch as an apology for dragging a poor helpless new student around the building.”
And the embarrassment continues along but it actually made me laugh and she laughed too. This was a good feeling…who was this girl?
To Be Continued…
