A Dogs world
Chapter One Pet Shop
“Aww!” said a little girl with red hair at eight o’clock in the morning. Her nose was pushed up against the glass of the cage.
“She is cute,” I commented.
“Well,” said my dad Sam. “She is all right for a child if you like kids.”
“I think she is a wonderful kid. She is kind and has a good heart; I can feel it.” I said.
“My pup, I love you. I had a kid as an owner. He was the meanest looking child I ever saw. He pulled my ears, stepped on my paws, and yanked on my tail,” my dad said.
“But Dad, I like her! She is kind—not mean. I can see it in her eyes,” I argued.
“Sasha, I just don’t want you to get hurt. I love you. Don’t you remember your mother?”
“Mom never had an owner and you know it!” I yelled.
“Please don’t cry, I didn’t mean to bring up your mother. She told me to never let you leave with a human child,” my dad persisted.
“I don’t care, Mom is dead. She can’t do anything about it,” I said.
“Well you should care a lot about your mother’s wishes.”
“I just don’t and I never will, so there’s nothing you can do about it.”
“You should reconsider Sasha, she loved you and I love you,” he persisted.
“Ok fine, I give up! I’ll act timid and afraid like I always do. Are you happy now, Dad??” I shouted.
As I lay awake thinking of my mom, Dad starts dreaming. I stare on. My dad’s running becomes faster, his whimpers grow louder and louder. After many long minutes that feel like hours, he quiets down and I fall asleep. When I wake up in the morning my dad startles me. He is standing over me waiting for me to wake up.
“What’s wrong? Why are you staring at me like that?”
“I had a dream about your mother; I think it’s time you knew the truth about her.”
“What do you mean?? You said she died giving birth to me.” I said.
“I couldn’t tell you the truth; she was shot several weeks after you were born.”
“What? Who shot her?”
“Her owner! That’s why I feel you would be happier with no owner,” he explained. He paused as if he was done talking and started to walk away.
“Is that all you’re going to tell me? I want to know more.” “When I first met your mother she had escaped from her owner and was looking for sanctuary. I was still with my child. So I told her to hide under the porch until I told her it was safe to come out.”
“Why did she escape her owner?”
“She was half wolf and her owner knew that. He tried to make her fight with other dogs. Your mother didn’t like violence. One fight was outside. The man thought the cage she was in was tall enough to hold her, but she jumped out and ran all the way to my yard.”
“How far was it?”
“To long to measure, she came from the next town over.”
“What happened while Mom was under the porch?”
“I was always fed outside, so I would leave some food in my bowl for her. At night she would eat, I’d watch her from my doghouse. This went on for a while. Your mother finally talked to me; actually she commented on my eyes. She said ‘I have never seen a dog with blue eyes like yours before—I like them!’
“I was so flabbergasted. I could tell she had never seen her own reflection, for she had a blue eye herself. I asked what breed she was.
‘All I know is my father was a wolf and my mother had very pale eyes. She always told me I look like my dad.’
“I told your mother she had a blue eye but she didn’t believe me. I brought her to my water bowl and told her to look.
She drawled ‘I look mysterious!’
“All I could do was chuckle.”
“So then what happened, Dad?? My tail is going a mile a minute.”
“I’m tired go to sleep!”
Chapter Two Luna
Several weeks later Sasha still hasn’t asked about her mother; she is trying to figure it out by herself. “Ok, I give up!”
“On what?”
“All this I time haven’t asked about Mom, aren’t you curious why?”
“Not really I thought you just forgot,” Sam said casually.
“Well, no! I’ve been trying to think of how you and Mom escaped together!”
“So, what did you come up with?”
“Absolutely nothing!”
“Do you want me to tell you?”
“Well, Duh!”
“Fine, you don’t have to get nasty! I was still sharing with her. I had asked her name, but she had no idea. So I said what have you been called?
‘Well I’ve been called Luna by the man I ran away from. I liked that name!’
Hey, I said to Luna, do you want to run with me to a farm and have a family?”
“How could you ask such a thing?” I hollered
“She had been under the porch for a month by then, so naturally I fell in love with her…..”
“Why have you paused come on tell me more! How did you escape?”
“There was a loose board in the fence. Naturally I rammed it as hard as I could and tumbled into the next yard with a laughing Luna right behind me. When I stood up all I could see was Luna’s hind end sticking up. I walked over to see her nose in the pond trying to get a fish. I asked if I could try. She moved over a little. I tried my luck, but didn’t have any and fell in.”
“Ha ha ha, I can’t believe you were so clumsy.”
“Well excuse me I had never been fishing before. Luckily there were no fences around the other yards. All of a sudden we heard a slam. I looked up and saw the neighbor girl staring at us. Luna quickly bolted towards the road. I yelled come this way, there are no cars.” She doubled back and we took off for the woods. We ran what seemed like days until we came to this clearing with a small pond. We walked over and got a drink. Out of the blue jumped a fox.
‘What are you doing here this far out, you pedigreed dog!’
Luna just stared past him.
‘Back off! So what if I do have a pedigree, it’s not like it’s your pond,’ I snapped at the fox.
‘Wow a dog that can stick up for himself! The name is Red.’ Luna finally looked up. ‘My name is Luna and this is Sam. We are looking for a farm to raise puppies in.’ I stared blankly at Luna; I didn’t think she really took it to heart when I mentioned it earlier.
Red had this evil grin on his face. ‘So, you two are starting a family, how nice. I can show you this farm that has this old guy and he takes in anything.’
Luna looked puzzled ‘what is that supposed to mean? You were looking at me when you said that.’
‘Oh nothing, nothing at all. I just meant he is kind to animals.’
So we followed Red for three days. For most of that time I was leery of that fox, he looked sly.
Luna looked at me, put her nose to the air and said ‘We’ve been here before. I can smell our tracks from yesterday!’
I told Red to stop and that we needed a break.
‘Why so soon?’ Red questioned.
‘We’ve been walking in circles for three days!’ Luna barked
‘Do you take me for that kind of fox?’ Red muttered slyly. Just then Red bared his teeth and said menacingly, ‘How dare you insult me, those are fighting words!’
I bared my teeth and lunged forward but caught only a mouth full of tail fur. It came off in my teeth. Then I felt a sharp pinch in my hind paw. I swung around and missed. I could hear him walking through the dead grass. All of a sudden I heard a loud yip and a blur of red ran passed me. Luna had a large clump of fur in her mouth,
She dropped it at my paws, and smiled ‘You’re welcome,’ is all she said.”
Chapter Three Friendly Farmer
“Luna and I walked up to the doors of an open barn. We could hear whistling from inside. We saw a man feeding cows and other animals. Luna gave a happy bark and startled the farmer. He turned around and stared at us.
I could smell no fear so I walked up to him as he called ‘come here dogs, I won’t hurt you.’
He grabbed my collar but not in a mean way he was just looking for my tags.
‘Oh maybe I should go call your owner.’
I quickly pulled loose from his grip on my collar and bolted to the door. I turned to Luna who was getting petted.
I barked, let’s go! He’s going to make me go back to my owners.
Luna started to walk towards me when the farmer said ‘oh my look at your paw it’s bloody. I think you should stay here then!’ Chapter Four Farm Funnies
“It rained for a couple of days the first week we stayed. The farmer’s house was nice he had two Collies: Duke and Lady, who herded sheep. Lady was expecting puppies any day now. On the first nice day all four of us were sitting on the porch when the farmer called Duke to the field. Lady sat up.
‘Lady you stay here!’ the farmer scolded.
Duke turned to us and said, ‘keep an eye on Lady, she likes trouble!’
After the farmer and Duke left Lady turned and said, ‘ya know what’s fun?’
‘No, I like fun though!’ Luna’s eyes sparkled.
‘The chickens like to be chased.’
‘Ok let’s go!’
As I followed Luna to the chicken yard one of the hens stared at us and looked uneasy. Luna started her chase! The yard was full of feathers and noise. It looked like fun. As I joined in Duke barked furiously at us to stop.
The farmer ran up to us ‘Bad dogs, how could you? You two are sleeping in the barn tonight!’
So that night we slept in an unused horse stall.”
“Was it cold that night dad?” Sasha giggled.
“Not really I had your mother’s warmth.”
“Did you ever chase the chickens again?”
“No we learned our lesson”
Chapter Five Here Come the Pups
“We got along fine for a couple of weeks then Lady had her puppies. She had three boys and two girls. Lady and Duke were the happiest dogs I’d ever seen. The farmer was happy too; he named them…”
“Oh yea; Prince, Angle Jesse, Duchess, and Mark.”
“That’s right they are six months older than you and your siblings. Lady’s puppies grew fast after four months Luna told me we were having puppies of our own. After wards I watched Duke and the farmer closely to better understand how to raise all of you. One day I asked Duke how is it being a dad
‘Tiring’ is all he said.
Two months later I woke up to find Luna missing, I looked for her everywhere. Then I saw Lady sitting on the steps to the house. Where is Luna? I asked nervously.
‘She’s inside! She just had her pups!
I franticly scratched at the door. The farmer came ‘oh ok you missed her didn’t you’ he said opening the door
I ran to Luna, when I saw you and your five brothers and sisters I almost collapsed on the floor. Time went by I watched you all get personalities. I noticed that you were and still are just like your mother”
“Really am I! Do I look like her too?”
“Not really you look like both of us.”
“Oh what happened next dad?”
Chapter Six Sad Story
“One night I was following you as usual, when the farmer called us.
‘You two wanna go for a ride?’
You tried to jump in but you were too little, the farmer had to lift you in. I got in after. You were sitting in the back. Then I could hear your mother barking furiously. The farmer heard too.
‘Stay’ he said nervously closing the door.
I jumped to the front for a better look. The farmer walked to the barn but didn’t get too far. He back tracked then ran to get his gun. I could hear yelps and barks. The gun sounded, then silence. After several seconds passed the farmer came running towards the truck with Luna drooped in his arms. When he opened the door I jumped back by you. I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it. He shot her—he really did—was all I could think at the time. We drove a short distance. The farmer got out, grabbed Luna and ran into a building that smelled of other animals. He left the truck door wide open.
You said ‘what happened to mamma. I’m going with her!’
I followed you out of the truck. You were just getting up when I jumped down. We couldn’t get in the first door so we ran around trying to find a way in. Defeated, we walked back to the truck but it was leaving without us. We tried to run after it, but you were so little you got tired and fell asleep. I guess I did too. When I woke up this mean looking man was putting you into a black van. I had to fight my way into it to stay with you. We drove for days; we stopped occasionally and got fed. Finally we stopped and the man put a leash on me.”
“We ended up here didn’t we?”
“Yes and here we are”
Chapter Seven The Little Girl
I woke up to see the same girl from a few days ago.
“I’m taking you home with me!”
I was excited but scared from the story my dad just told me. The man that fed us took me out and put me in her arms.
“Let’s get in the car” she said sweetly
All the way to her house she was trying to name me. I didn’t like any of them so I ignored her.
“Well the only other name I know is Sasha.” I jumped up and licked her face.
Chapter Eight Lonely
I can’t believe it’s been a week since Sasha left; I miss her, Sam thought.
“He hasn’t eaten since the pup left” the man muttered to himself.
Sam started whimpering
“That dog is just heartbroken, I guess.”
Chapter Nine Friendly Face
“Sam I hoped you’d be here!” the farmer shouted.
Sam looked up to see the farmer in the store! He started barking with excitement
“That’s my dog! Where did you get him?”
“We got them from a cruel-looking man in a black van. I was hesitant but I felt sorry for the dogs,” the man said.
“How much do you want for him?”
“No charge, he has not been so excited since he got here,” the man said as he let Sam out.
Chapter Ten The Truth
As they approached the car, Sam saw Luna. He couldn’t believe his eyes. First the farmer, now Luna! Sam jumped in the truck.
“Your tails are going to fall off if you keep wagging them so hard,” the farmer said with a chuckle.
“I can’t believe you’re alive!” Sam exclaimed.
“Of course I am. What do you think happened?”
“I thought the farmer shot you and I told Sasha that he did. So what really happened?”
“Well, that night the fox was too close to the puppies so we got into a fight and he bit me. I wasn’t shot. The farmer actually saved me; he scared the fox with the gunshot. When I was better and went back to the farm, I was devastated to find you both missing."
“What happened to the other pups?”
“The farmer sold them to buy food for us. He even sold Lady’s pups, but Lady told me it’s normal and not to be too sad. The farmer made sure they were going to good homes.”
“Oh good, but I wish the farmer had come sooner so Sasha would be with us now.”
“We’re here!” said the farmer opening the door.
“Look for yourself,” Luna said.
Sasha came running up to them.
“Grandpa, you found him” said the little girl from the pet shop.
