Ty had honestly thought Matt was dead. How could he think otherwise? His own father had dived into the water after him...and had managed to only find T.k. And by then it had been much to late to save him, so it was only logical that he'd given up his friend, who was still in that dark water somewhere, for dead. As much as the thought killed him inside.
Of course T.k's death hadn't made it any better. T.k was Kari's age, his sister, and seeing his small body laying limp on the concrete as Dracula tried first CPR, and then a transfusion of vampire blood, was almost to much for him. He could still remember the silent shock on his sister's face. Kari didn't say a word, she didn't cry, she just stared. And he remembered thinking "Her eyes look so empty, is that how I look?" T.k had been like his little brother, Matt his best friend. How could he have lost them in so little time?
Just as Dracula drew back from T.k, a sadness so deep in his eyes that looking into them you'd forget he was the King of Vampires, and think maybe he was just another man. Andrea ran up. The look on her face was a wild fury, like a beast set free from its cage, and try as they might no one could hold her back. Not that they needed to, her charge was stopped cold in it's tracks as she came within sight of the small body sprawled on the floor. Even thought Ty was just a kid he could see something working in her eyes, the fury rolling like a storm in the green pools, mixing with hurt and sadness.
Like an injured animal Andrea stumbled forward, collapsing onto her knees and pushing Dracula away, as he reached for her. Wanting to somehow comfort her.
Ty for one had never seen Andrea look the way she did at that moment. With shaking arms she slipped her hands beneath T.k's body and lifted it from the ground; flinching as his head rolled back and his arms dangled limp at his sides. In silence she slowly brought him to her chest, the sob that broke through her was like nothing he'd ever heard before; an animal sound. Like someone chocking on the air...someone dying. In fact, later, when Ty looked upon this memory he would imagine the sound of a glass breaking. A lot of people would say that it was the day Harry died that had broken War...but Ty felt it was this day that did it.
Even though Matt and T.k hadn't come from her body as her daughter Sora had. They had been trusted to her by her friend...and she'd grown to love them as a mother loves her own children. Holding the body of one, and not knowing the fate of the other was probably like someone sinking their fingers into her chest and digging her heart out in tiny pieces.
But that was ages ago. And time had passed since then. Matt had returned alive, though no one knew how, and Galexy had won for him a sort of acceptance, only with very fine lines that were not to be crossed.
Ty had stepped forward to help, and tonight they were testing out their newest attempt to keep Matt under control. Stepping into the clearing that Galexy had given them instructions too. The forest was a dangerous and mysterious place and this clearing was no different. It was heavily shadowed and the branches that reached inward looked like claws against the dark grass.
"You shouldn't be here Ty, you should leave." Matt's voice was shaky as shivers of pain slithered down his spine. Even though the trees blocked the sky he could feel the pull of the full moon as it hung overhead, a heavy ivory weight in the sky.
"Don't be stupid Matt, I'm not going to let you do this by yourself." Ty gestured for Matt to walk pass him, and as they came into the center of the open space what appeared to be thick silver chains materialized before them, coming out of the very ground itself. Somehow they glowed even in the darkness. "Plus...apparently someone's going to have to strap you in." Ty grinned, but it felt fake as he gestured for Matt to sit on the ground.
Kneeling before his friend he picked up one of the thick manacles, feeling the weight of the silver in his hands. "You ready?" He asked meeting Matt's eyes, and watching as his best friend slowly nodded.
"As I'll ever be."
Sighing, Ty, lifted the chain and opened the brace, moving it so that he could clamp it shut over Matt's ankle. As soon as the silver touched against his skin, Matt screamed, his voice raising into a howl of agony. Beneath his skin his muscles grew tight and his blue eyes flashed greenish yellow, the glowing eyes of a wolf.
Meanwhile Ty froze, caught by the worry that gripped his heart as he watched the pain spark within his friend, the silver burning the skin of his ankle. For a moment he was sure Matt would change, but somehow he managed to remain as he was, his breathing labored as he focused his eyes on his bestfriend. "Do the next one." He panted, feeling his heart pound in his chest. Ty didn't need any more prompting and so without a word he snapped the next one shut over Matt's other ankle, moving around so that he was by his friends head.
Now came the hands, and again Ty hesitated. Matt had lain on his back, his skin covered in sweat and his arms up over his head. There was pain, but he hadn't screamed again, instead he'd bitten his lip so hard that blood leaked down his cheeks, and tears stung his eyes.
"Hey Matt....you like Superman right?" Ty smiled "Even though Batman is clearly better." He winked and was rewarded with a pained smile from his friend and a soft almost invisible nod. "Well...right now your Clark Kent. But when the moon comes up your going to be Superman....and this, this..." He lifted up the chain, quickly snapping it around his friend's wrist. "This is your Kryptonite."
Despite the pain Matt managed to laugh, although it turned into a coughing fit halfway through. "I never looked at it that way..." Looking up at Ty with eyes that expressed his full trust and love for his best friend, Matt smiled. "Thanks Ty, Thank you for everything."
"No problem buddy."
