Chapter Four
After they’d gotten back together, David was back in rockstar mode, paying special attention to all his fans, except for Jade. She basically stood with Allen for the rest of the night and talked to him while the others mingled with the fans.
“He was so upset that you dumped him four years ago,” Allen said, shaking his head at his annoying friend, “It’s like he forgot this was why you were unhappy. Because he stands there and gets real friendly with those other women when his girlfriend is right over here.”
“Maybe it’ll be easier to deal with now that I’m older,” Jade answered with a shrug, “I mean, I’m more mature now than I was at thirteen, fourteen years old. Maybe I was annoyed for nothing.”
Allen shrugged and took a sip of his beer, “Whatever makes this relationship easier for you I guess.”
Jade would’ve been irritated by that comment if she didn’t catch some girl leaning against David with her arm around his neck. Jade wasn’t the jealous type but women needed to learn the boundaries. Don’t touch my ******** boyfriend. Jade subtly shoved the drunk girl out of her way and wrapped herself up against David, “David, sweetness. I’m tired. Let’s go home.”
“You have a girlfriend?” said the girl Jade had pushed out of her way.
“Well we were together ninth grade then broke up and-”
“Yes, he has a girlfriend,” Jade interrupted him and kissed his cheek, “Sweetie they don’t want to hear our life story. Now let’s go.”
“Babe I can’t just leave,” David said.
“I’m going out to the parking lot and I’m gonna wait in my car for maybe ten minutes. If you’re not there in ten minutes I’m leaving.”
“That’s perfect!” David gave her a big kiss, “Just give me ten minutes.”
As soon as Jade walked away from him, the circle of women tightened as if they were trying to make sure she didn’t get back in. She scoffed and walked out to her car in the dark by herself. The boots and the jacket were good ideas after all. Even in the summer it can get pretty cold at night. She sat in her car and looked at her phone. It was ten minutes to midnight. At midnight, she was just going to try to find somewhere else to spend the night.
At 11:59, David finally tumbled into the car, laughing and hollering, “You don’t know how many autographs I made out tonight.”
“David,” Jade squeezed the steering wheel and narrowed her eyes, “It’s almost midnight. I’ve been in this relationship since 7:30 and already I am so angry at you it would give me great pleasure to scratch your eyes out.”
“Babe I need to be on the scene,” he said, “I just do. It’s not just about singing and running around on stage. I have to be friendly and personal.”
“I would get that if you talked to other guys once in awhile,” Jade said, “You were surrounded by other women and you didn’t even try to hide the one hanging off of you. I was a few feet away from you David.”
“I’m sorry Jade,” he said softly, “I really am. Please forgive me. I promise I’ll be a better boyfriend from now on.”
When Jade still wasn’t convinced, he leaned over and turned her to face him and he kissed her, gently at first, and then got rougher after a minute. They pulled away from each other, both of them panting a little and he gave her that smile she never could resist, “I hated being away from you for so long Jade. I’m really glad you’re back in my life. I don’t want to lose you again.”
Jade sighed, giving in and kissing him again, “You’re not going to. Now let’s go home. I’m exhausted.”
Maya woke up on Saturday morning on cloud nine. After last night with Frank, nothing could kill her good mood. She rolled onto her stomach and grabbed her phone that was on the floor next to her discarded pants. She looked at the time on her phone. She wasn’t the kind of person to sleep until 10:00. She sat up, wrapping Frank’s blanket around herself as he came into the bedroom already fully dressed, brushing his teeth and looking at his phone, “Ok, don’t be mad.”
“Don’t tell me…” Maya fell back on the bed and groaned, “Jesus Frank. You always give in to Vivian and Gerard even though I feel like I’ve made it perfectly clear I don’t like them.”
“If you wanna be with me, you’re gonna have to be with my friends too,” Frank said as his fingers furiously typed a text message.
“Frank…it is way too early to be quoting the spice girls,” Maya said irritably, rubbing her eyes.
“Quoting the spice girls?”
Maya had reluctantly gone with Frank to see Vivian and Gerard again, though Maya was furious the entire time and was too angry to make an effort to even pretend Vivian wasn’t a dumbass.
“So what’d you guys do last night?” Vivian asked, nudging Maya with her elbow. Maya scooted away from her and lowered her brow even more, “None of your goddamn business what I did last night. You ask your friends what you did last night. And we’re not friends.”
Frank gently kicked her underneath the table. They were sitting in a large booth at a small diner having breakfast together. Vivian had squeezed herself into Maya and Frank’s side when Gerard’s side was open and clear and could easily fit her. But she just had to sit next to Maya. Just had to. No way around it apparently.
“Don’t ******** kick me,” Maya kicked Frank back ten times harder and rested her head on the table. They’d had such a good time last night and he’d just ruined it in five seconds. He gave in so easily when it came to them. He said it was because they were such good friends but Maya was convinced at this point that he was just a doormat and always would be their doormat. And Frank’s IQ lowered a good 10 points when they were around. Maya felt more like she was baby-sitting than anything. She had little patience for children. She especially hated adults that acted like children, like Gerard and Vivian and Frank when he was anywhere near them.
“You know what,” Maya stood up from the table and scooted out of the booth, “I’m really not hungry right now. I’m just gonna head home and get the ******** out of here.”
She didn’t even have the energy or patience to sit there and make up a lie. When she turned and looked in the window, Frank had watched her for a second and then returned his attention to his friends. Maya had never felt so hurt by Frank before. And it was not a fun feeling at all.
Audrey had spent a longer time than she would care to admit trying to decide what she was going to wear to this art gallery. She knew it was kind of a waste of breath to try and impress Professor Brooks. But she didn’t want to look like a slob in front of him. She picked a nice white v-neck shirt and a thing black sweater to go over it. Should be nice enough to go to an art gallery. Her roommate was already gone for the day and Maya and Jade weren’t around to give her any last minute advice. All she could do was trust her own judgment and get into her car and head to the address Professor Brooks had given to her. Her heart pounded against her chest as she got closer to her destination. She took a few deep breaths, trying to keep her cool. She began asking herself why she was getting herself so worked up over nothing. Maybe it was just the idea of hanging out with a teacher outside of school. It’s not like they were going anywhere weird together. He was an art history teacher. She was an art history student with a bunch of other art classes on the side. It would make sense for them to go to an art gallery together right?
Professor Brooks was waiting outside the door for her when she pulled into the parking lot. He was wearing a nice sports coat, very casual but still looking nice. She pulled into a spot closest to the door and got out of her car, waving her arm over her head to get his attention, “Professor Brooks! Over here!”
He walked over to her car as she grabbed her purse from the backseat, “Audrey, we’re not on campus right now. You can go ahead and call me Tom if that would make you comfortable.”
“Oh that should be fine,” she said, “Tom,” that kind of made being outside of school with him a bit easier, calling him by his first name, being casual with him. It’s like they were friends. They walked into the gallery together and looked over the art together. He’d ask her what she thought about a certain painting and she’d give him her thoughts on it. And he’d look at her with such focus, like she was the only person in the room, like he was totally interested in every word that came out of her mouth.
“You have such a way with words Audrey,” he said, “I read your essay last night when I went home.”
“You did?” Audrey inhaled and held her breath in, clenching her fists behind her back nervously, “What did you think of it?”
“I thought it was brilliant,” he replied, “You’re wise beyond your years Audrey. I really do look forward to seeing more of your work this semester. Your chances of being picked to work with me on my project are incredibly high at this point Audrey.”
“That’s amazing Profess-” Audrey stopped herself mid-sentence and started over, “That’s amazing…Tom.”
So it's a little shorter than normal but it's now 2 in the morning....I'm slowly losing my ability to spell...and think properly LOL but boom. three updates in a row. How ******** awesome am I right now?? ;D
