Chapter Eleven
“Well, I actually did ask Jade why she went apeshit on Vivian,” Frank said, “She told me what happened. Did you know there is a video of that fight?”
Maya burst out laughing but quieted down when Frank started to frown, “I’m sorry but…can I see that video?”
“Maya!” Frank said in a whiny tone. Maya nodded and let out a few final giggles and then was silent. Frank cleared his throat and continued, “Anyway, I was thinking about what you said and especially after seeing what was happening in that video and I realized you were right. They’re…kind of stupid.”
“Kind of,” Maya rolled her eyes and scoffed but allowed Frank to keep talking anyway, “And I’m here to ask you for a second chance because I’m done choosing bad friends over you. You’re gonna be my number one priority. Always.”
Frank grabbed her hands and kissed them, “Please. I waited here for an hour to ask you to take me back. I’ll be better this time Maya. No more doing stupid s**t with Gerard and Vivian. I’m clean.”
Maya sighed and looked down at their hands and the way he was holding onto hers for dear life. She opened her mouth but wasn’t ready to speak yet so she just sat there with her jaw dropped. After these past few weeks with Richard, she wasn’t sure she wanted to go back to Frank. Frank was sweet but she just wasn’t one hundred percent sure.
“I’ll think about it Frank,” she said, “I need time to think about this. Can you just give some time?”
Frank blinked. This was obviously not the answer he was expecting. He was expecting Maya to take him back after hearing his little speech on how he’d put her first. But Maya’s thoughts and feelings were a bit more complicated than that.
While Jade was at work that afternoon after her morning classes, she got a text from Maya asking if she knew there was a video on the internet of her beating Vivian to a bloody pulp. When Jade read the text, she somehow knew Maya was probably watching this video herself laughing her a** off. Jade knew Maya so well it was just disgusting. Her boss decided to stick her with some manual labor. She had to go to the back and bring in some new hardcovers and put them on the shelves. She always hated doing that because they were dozens of books in these boxes and it made it so difficult to carry. Her face probably looked so ridiculous while she walked from the back to the very front of the store with the box in her arms. She grunted and sighed as her arms released the box and she felt like her arms were gone and she had to wiggle them around to get the feeling back. She should probably start some weight training. She cut open the box and started placing the books onto the shelves. Someone walked past her, browsing through different books. But the person was standing so close behind her it was creeping her out a little bit. She hurried up and finished putting the first box of books onto the shelves and rushed back into the back area to get another box. She was alone in the back and that just scared her even more. She bent down to pick up the next box when the door opened. She quickly turned but there was no one walking in and the door closed again.
“Come on. Get out of your head,” she whispered to herself. She bent down again to lift the box. She felt a dark shadow cover her light and when she tried to turn, the person behind her wrapped their arm around her waist and forced her up.
“I know everything,” it was a man whispering in her ear, “I know exactly how to hurt you.”
“Let go of me!” Jade found the strength in her to scream and shove the man away. The force of shoving him pushed her back a little too and she tripped over the pile of boxes. She knocked a few down with her and she landed hard on the cement, arching her back at the intense pain she was experiencing right now. She watched the man stumble onto his feet and run off before anyone came in to see what she was screaming for. When he disappeared, two male employees replaced him and helped her sit up, “What are you screaming for?! Are you ok?”
“This guy he-he came in and just grabbed me and…” Jade stopped when she began receiving raised eyebrows, “What? Don’t you believe me?”
“We didn’t see anyone running out of here in a hurry or anything,” one of them said with a shrug. She groaned and flung her arms around to get them away from her. She knew what she felt. She wasn’t crazy. She felt him grab her and she heard him clear as day. She couldn’t recognize the voice at all so she was still confused as to who was doing this to her and what he was going to do to hurt her. She didn’t really think it was physical. If it was, he probably would’ve done more than just grab her. But how was he planning on hurting her?
Audrey came into class with a big folder tucked underneath her arm. Tom pointed to it and smiled politely. The smile, though innocent and totally friendly, was dangerous especially when Audrey discovered what people thought she was doing with Tom. But she answered him anyway, even with the curious eyes staring her down, “Oh I got assigned a lot of things to do today. Art and photography and stuff. I just stuck it all in this big folder.”
He nodded, satisfied with her answer and she took a seat in the very back, as far from everyone as possible. They wouldn’t be obvious and turned their heads to stare. So it was best to sit in the back. She was going to start packing up her stuff and moving back home. She couldn’t even look at Kelsey after her confession and Kelsey knew it. She never came to the room anymore, even when Audrey knew she didn’t have a class. She wondered how much of these rumors Tom knew. I mean, if word of Audrey having a crush gets to the dean, how did these rumors skate by without her noticing?
Tom dismissed the class and they both waited until the entire class was gone. Audrey finally got up and headed for the door, “Audrey wait. I told you almost two months ago I wanted to see your work. Now let’s see it.”
Audrey handed him the giant folder and he opened it, revealing almost two months worth of work. He looked through each individual photograph, even her really bad practice shots. He looked at all her paintings and sketches and finally closed the folder and pushed it towards her. She grabbed it and hugged it against her chest, “What’d you think?”
“Audrey, you’re better than most people my age,” Tom said, “I know I’ve said this so many times before, but you deserve much more than this.”
“What do you mean?”
“I want you to do something for me,” he said, “Take the project we were working on and take my name off. They’ve seen me a hundred times but they need to notice you. You need to grab this opportunity with both hands and get yourself out of this town. You’re gonna travel the world and amaze people with this.”
“I don’t wanna leave,” she replied, “I have a life here. Friends and family. And you.”
“Audrey, I can’t allow you to do that,” he said, “I would let go of you if it meant not holding you back. You’ve gotta do this. Take my name off our project and present it.”
She would’ve argued but she didn’t she just nodded, “Alright, I’ll do it. But I won’t be happy about it.”
Shorter than normal but hey what the hell.
I think I've gotten Audrey about of this *pull out of my a*** stage. We might be getting somewhere here.
