Chapter Sixteen
Norman wasn’t the first person Jade had ever slept with. The first night that her and David had gotten back together, they’d slept together. It should’ve been a special moment for her but it wasn’t even close. It was uncomfortable and painful but David didn’t seem to notice or care about her discomfort. She didn’t enjoy a second of it and she regretted it afterwards. Norman knew this and was patient with her. He was gentle and careful. Jade did at one point hear her phone ring faintly from the living room but she didn’t care enough to get up and answer it.
Norman rolled onto his back and grabbed Jade and pulled her closer to him. She held onto him like he was a stuffed animal, resting her head on his chest. It took her awhile to catch her breath and for her heartbeat to slow down. With her head on his chest, she could hear his heart pounding too against her ears, which made her hug him even tighter. He stroked her hair soothingly, “This isn’t too soon is it?”
“I don’t think so,” Jade said, “I mean, I know I don’t regret anything.”
“I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page,” he said, “Because you did tell me about what’s his face and how you felt rushed and-”
Jade put her fingers on his lips to shut him up and she smiled, “David was an a*****e. There is no way I would ever compare you to him. You’re a much better boyfriend than he ever was.”
They both paused and Norman smirked at her, “Did you just refer to me as your boyfriend?”
Jade bit her lip and she pushed all her hair back nervously, “Am I not supposed to call you that?”
“I like it actually,” he said, “I like the idea of calling you my girlfriend.”
After that, they realized they had skipped dinner so they decided to just order a pizza since they didn’t really feel like going out. Even though their days had ended perfectly, in the back of their minds, they were still worried about what had happened earlier. It was a possibility that it was just glare from the sunlight but it still freaked them out and they just weren’t interested in going out now. When the doorbell rang, Jade got up and wrapped herself up in Norman’s robe. When she opened the door, there was her friend Allen standing on Norman’s porch with the box of pizza in his hands, “Jade! I didn’t know you lived here.”
“Oh I don’t. I’m just staying here for the night,” Jade said as she handed him the money, “I didn’t know you were delivering pizzas now.”
“It’s just a temporary job,” he said, “I felt like I should have some income while I look for something better.”
“Good for you,” Allen and Jade stood there in silence for a minute and she held the pizza box at her hip, “So, how has David been lately?”
“I haven’t actually seen him since you broke up with him,” Allen said, “He left with Vivian and then he stopped showing up to practices and stuff. We’ve been auditioning new singers since no one can get a hold of him. He took your break up harder than we all thought he would.”
“That sucks,” she said. David had bounced back pretty quickly when she broke up with him the first time in ninth grade. And he had to expect this didn’t he? Jade had already dumped him once for the same reason and yet he repeated the same mistakes and he lost her because of it both times. She wasn’t going to feel guilty about it this time. She didn’t even want to look at him again, “Well, thanks for the pizza. It was good seeing you again Allen.”
“You too,” he said, “We should get together soon.”
“Sure,” she replied with a smile. She waved to him as he got back into his car and drove off down the street. She closed the door and hopped back into bed with Norman, “Who was that you were talking to?”
“Oh, he’s just a friend of mine,” she said as she opened the pizza box, “He’s in David’s band. Apparently David took our break up pretty bad.”
Norman grabbed a slice of pizza and took a big bite out of it, “Really?”
“Yeah. Allen said the night after I broke up with him he stopped showing up to band practice and no one can get a hold of him,”
Norman took another bite and shrugged, “Well, what are ya gonna do?”
Maya pulled into her driveway and came back into her house. She found Richard still in her bedroom but this time he had actually gone into the living room for a second to take an actual book off the shelf. Maya climbed into her bed with him and kissed him, “I’m back. Where were we?”
Richard sat up and nudged her so she’d sit up too, “Listen, I’ve been thinking, we’ve tried this so many times and have been stopped every single time.”
“Yeah, so?” Maya said.
“Well maybe these are signs telling us to wait,” he replied, “Like I’ve said before, if we’re going to do this, I wanna do this right.”
Maya tried to hide her disappointment and she nodded, “Yeah. Yeah you’re totally right. I get it. We should wait.”
“Good,” he said, wrapping an arm around her neck and kissing her cheek, “Now, are you hungry? We could go get some dinner and bring it back here if you want.”
“Sure,” she climbed off her bed and picked her bag up off the floor, “Let’s go get some Chinese food.”
Maya waited outside the restaurant while Richard went inside and ordered for them. The air started to smell like skunk and Maya headed for the door to escape the horrible stench. But when she saw a familiar face come around the corner, she realized it wasn’t a skunk. It was Vivian with a joint in between her fingers. Figures.
“Maya, what are you doing out here all by yourself?” Vivian asked. Maya considered running inside for a minute. Vivian’s reflexes were too slow to react right away and Maya would be able to hide in the crowd of people inside. But she decided against it.
“I’m waiting for someone,” Maya replied, not even bothering to look at her. Looking at Vivian just made her so angry. Vivian looked inside as if she was going to figure out who Maya was waiting for.
“Have you heard from Frank lately?” Vivian asked. Maya shook her head, “I haven’t either. He completely dropped Gerard and me from his life.”
“Smartest thing he could’ve done,” Maya retorted harshly, “You and Gerard are poisonous people. You bring out the worst in people.”
Vivian frowned, “You’re pretty poisonous yourself. You have your friend Jade come and beat me up. Very immature Maya.”
“Oh really? I was the one who told her to beat you up?” Maya started to laugh and she shrugged, “It had nothing to do with the fact that you were grinding her boyfriend and telling her to shut up. You know Jade’s temper and yet you continue to ******** with her. In my opinion, you got what you deserved.” “I didn’t deserve any of it,” Vivian argued, “I didn’t deserve Jade’s beating and I didn’t deserve Gerard dumping me.”
“Vivian, if I caught my boyfriend dry humping some girl, I’d dump his a**,” Maya said.
“I was-”
“Yes Vivian I know,” Maya rolled her eyes, “You were drunk. You were high off your a**. You’re such an a*****e Vivian. Get out of my face.”
“And what are ya gonna do if I don’t? Send Jade after me?” Vivian asked challengingly. Maya grabbed Vivian by the collar and pulled her closer so she could get in her face, “First of all, I don’t need Jade to fight my battles for me you dumb b***h. And secondly, I will hurt you so bad you’re gonna wish I had sent Jade. Now shut your goddamn mouth and get away from me.”
Vivian and Maya both turned their heads when they heard the doors open. Richard stood there with a bag full of food and stared at Maya with wide eyes, looking a little scared as he walked past her and dug his keys out of his pocket. Maya pushed Vivian away from her and Vivian fell onto her a**. She tried her best to hide her fear of Maya but she could definitely see it in her eyes. And it made her feel too damn good.
Audrey laid on her stomach on her bed, staring at her project that sat on her pillow. Looking at it just made her feel even worse. She couldn’t even describe how guilty she felt. Maya couldn’t reassure her that this was going to be ok. Audrey didn’t know what she was going to do when Tom found out that she had lied about turning this thing in. She wouldn’t blame him if he got mad. This was definitely a big opportunity to blow off. Studying in London was a dream. What was she even thinking? She rolled off her bed and put the project away in her closet so it wouldn’t be able to haunt her anymore than it already had. She went downstairs to the living room where her parents were sitting watching TV. She sat down on the loveseat across from the couch, “Can I ask you guys something?”
Her dad pressed the mute button on the TV and they turned their attention to her. Audrey played with the ring on her thumb, “So if I had this opportunity to go to school in London but decided not to pursue it, would you be mad?”
Her mom and dad exchanged a few confused looks and her mom replied, “Well, we’d certainly be surprised.”
“But no we wouldn’t be mad,” her dad added, “Why? Did you do that?”
“No,” Audrey answered them quickly and shook her head, “I was just asking hypothetically. I’ve never been given a chance a chance to study in London.”
“We would prefer you took the chance if there was one,” her mom said, “Going to school in London is the ultimate dream Audrey. Even though we wouldn’t be mad, we’d be lying if we told you we wouldn’t be disappointed. I don’t want you to go as far as you have in school only to give up the ultimate opportunity.”
Audrey’s heart dropped and she stood up, slowly heading for the staircase again, “Thanks Mom and Dad. I’m just gonna go upstairs and study.”
She went back upstairs to her room and fell back on her bed. She stared at her closed closet door. Even though she couldn’t see it behind the door, it was still somehow just burning a hole through her and she smashed her face into her pillow. She couldn’t believe she had given this up. A couple of months ago, she would’ve worked her a** off and then dealt with the tearful good-byes. But as soon as Tom stepped into her life, she became the kind of person that would give up something so amazing for love.
