Chapter 31
“God I wish he would just hurry up and say it,” Jade whispered. Maya ignored her comment, too focused on Benjamin to hear anything else.
“Audrey Gonzales,” Jade and Maya were the first people on their feet clapping and cheering. Audrey was unable to get out of her chair to walk over to the podium. She at first thought she heard wrong. It was when she felt the guy sitting next to her nudge her that she knew she’d heard right. She stood up and the only thing she could focus on until she got to the podium was making sure she didn’t fall down. Once she got a hold of the podium, her unstable legs held her up fine. Benjamin shook her hand, “Audrey has just won a summer trip to London which could potentially end up with her staying there and finishing her studies there.”
“This is such an honor,” Audrey said softly, “I almost feel…unworthy of this kind of thing.”
“Don’t be silly Audrey,” Benjamin said, placing his arm around her shoulder, “You deserve this Audrey. You really do!”
Audrey stared at Maya and Jade in the front row. They were both on their feet cheering. Everyone else eventually followed their lead and started shouting with them. And of course her parents were standing right behind Jade and Maya taking dozens of pictures of her. All she could do was stand there in front of all those people and cry tears of joy. She was finally able to step down and off the little stage as everyone scattered. As soon as she stepped off the stage, Jade and Maya ran full speed towards her and wrapped her up in a group hug.
“Didn’t we tell you?!” Jade said.
“You should listen to us more often Audrey,” Maya added, “You were worried for nothing!”
“I know,” Audrey said, laughing off her tears, “I still can’t believe it. I get to go to London!”
When Tom approached the three of them, Maya grabbed Jade and she backed away. Audrey started laughing again when Jade pointed at the two of them while Maya dragged her away with the most confused look on her face and then it changed to irritation when Maya wouldn’t answer her questions. Tom brought Audrey’s attention back to him when he grabbed her hand and held it tight in both of his, “Congratulations Audrey. I’m happy for you. I truly am.”
“I know,” Audrey said, gripping tightly onto his hands, “I’m just so sad that we’ll be apart for the whole summer. I was kind of looking forward to spending the summer with you.”
“We’ll be just fine Audrey,” Tom leaned forward and placed a loving kiss on her cheek, “I know it.”
When Maya dragged Jade away, Jade’s phone started ringing and when she saw that David’s name popped up, she scrambled to get Maya’s hands off her so she could quickly answer before it went to voicemail, “David! Hi!”
“Babe where are you?” David asked, “I wanted to see you tonight.”
“I told you,” Jade replied sternly, “I went to that art gallery to see Audrey. She won a trip to London for the summer. It’s really cool. She’ll be like an intern working in this little workshop. It sounds pretty cool.”
“Yeah sure,” David said quickly, blowing Jade as well as Audrey off completely, “So when are you coming over?”
“I’m not,” Jade said, “I’m going home after this. I’m tired. Do we really need to see each other every single day?”
“Well, you are my girlfriend Jade,” David mumbled.
“I know. But I need alone time too,” Jade said. Their relationship had actually been a lot better when David had music to keep him busy and he wasn’t this clingy. She actually missed him ignoring her for once, “And so do you.”
“Fine ok,” suddenly Jade heard a click and she looked at her phone as the words CALL ENDED blinked before it returned to her home screen. She angrily locked her phone and threw it back into her purse. Maya had been staring at her the whole time just waiting to ask her who she had just been talking to. But Jade beat her to the answer before Maya could even ask.
“It was David,” she said.
Maya closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose, hanging her head, “Please tell me you are not dating him again.”
“You don’t understand the situation Maya,” Jade said, mentally kicking herself for saying it that way. She didn’t want it to come out that way at all. But she didn’t want to explain everything to Maya at the same time. For now, it was probably best to let Maya think she was just being an a**.
Just as Jade thought, Maya held up her arms in surrender and scoffed, “Ok. It’s just that I remember how happy you were not being with David and I didn’t think you would wanna get back into that. But ok.”
Jade would’ve apologized and explained everything. But she needed to figure it all out herself before she could say anything to anyone. Jade understood completely where Maya was coming from with this. Jade had come to learn that Maya and Audrey were both right when they said he was strangely attached to Jade and became really weird when it came to the subject of Jade. This was another thing Jade was mentally kicking herself for…for being so incredibly oblivious to how messed up David really had been. It was an easy thing to miss but Maya and Audrey hadn’t missed it. And Jade should’ve listened.
Monday came around and the regular school routine returned. Maya was unusually tired this morning. This weekend had kept her awake longer than normal. Audrey’s parents had thrown her a party on Saturday to celebrate her achievements and that lasted all day long and then she and Jade stayed overnight. Then on Sunday, the three of them went to the mall just for fun. Maya and Jade had gone half on a little congratulatory present for Audrey and then treated her to lunch. They had gone back to Audrey’s house with her and stayed pretty late into the night. When Maya met up with Jade and Audrey this morning, they were just as tired and sluggish as she was.
“Maybe we shouldn’t do that on a Sunday again,” Jade said with a yawn.
“It was a fun weekend though,” Audrey added, “I think it was worth it. Kind of.”
“I wish I was the kind of person who could just fall asleep anywhere,” Maya mumbled, looking over at an empty bench, “Like that bench.”
Jade looked at the bench and scrunched up her face, “Oh Maya. That’s not a good place to fall asleep.”
“It looks pretty nice right now,” Maya said. Jade shook her head but couldn’t hide an amused smile.
“Well I’ve gotta get to class,” Jade said, “I’ll see you guys later.”
Audrey and Maya waved as Jade adjusted her bag on her shoulder and walked away towards her first class. Maya and Audrey, having classes in the same general direction, started walking together.
“It’s gonna suck being away from you guys this summer,” Audrey said, “Especially if they ask me to stay and finish school there. I’ll be gone for awhile.”
“I’m pretty sure I can speak for Jade when I say that I want you to get far in life,” Maya said, “And it looks like that’s starting to happen for you. I can deal with the time apart. That’s what phones and computers are for. I’m gonna be fine. You just worry about you.”
Audrey smiled and hugged Maya before they parted ways. As Maya walked away, she walked past a group of girls. Not just any girls, but those girls that she recognized from Richard’s class. The ones who just stared at him and drooled over his accent. The ones that didn’t actually pay attention to a word he said.
“I ran into Professor Gray when I was at that little coffee shop down the street from here,” she said, “And he approached me. I was totally shocked.”
Maya sat down at a nearby to hear this conversation. She watched this girl’s friend jump up and down and lean in, “Are you serious Olivia? What did he say?!”
“He actually asked to sit down with me and share this little muffin he’d bought,” she squealed. Maya opened a book and pretended to read it. Even though all she was doing was imitating this Olivia girl, “And then he asked me to have lunch with him. I cannot freaking believe it! He works at a new university so we can totally date.”
Maya dropped the book and slammed it shut, storming off. Richard had said he could play this game Maya was and that he could play it better. And what better way to piss her off than to choose to date some dumbass like “Olivia.”
So, this is a short one. I just wanted to get it done so it wouldn't bother me anymore. I haven't felt the motivation to write so I just took a little break. Plus...I dug myself into a hole with Jade. Oh god, I feel stupid doing what I've done with her. Ughhhhhh. Anyways...I wouldn't expect too many daily updates like I used to. I don't know. I'm just not feeling like myself lately. I don't know what's up with me. I need something to do...anyways, I'm gonna go. Maybe, maybe I'll update tomorrow...if I can figure out what to do with Jade...as well as Audrey...Audrey always gives me a hard time.
