Chapter Thirty-Six
After lunch, Charlie drove Maya back to his school and parked next to her car. Neither one of them moved though. Maya had been unusually quiet during lunch today and Charlie had taken notice, “Are you ok Maya?”
“Oh I’m perfectly fine,” Maya said.
“Are you sure?” Charlie asked, “You seemed kind of distracted today.”
Maya didn’t mean to make that obvious. But it was getting harder and harder to be around Richard. Because she had this feeling that she would eventually have to choose between him and Charlie and that wouldn’t be an easy decision to make. Especially after talking to Richard today. He had tried to piss off Maya and move on with Olivia but he couldn’t do it. It wasn’t worth it to irritate Maya.
“I was just distracted by school stuff,” Maya said, “It’s no big deal. I had fun with you today.”
“I did too,” he replied. He grabbed her hand, “I know I’ve already said this but I’m really glad I found you.”
Maya leaned over and kissed him but didn’t say the same to him. She just kissed him and they both got out of the car. Maya unlocked her car door, “I’ll see you later Charlie. Thanks for today.”
“Do you have to go back right now?” Charlie asked with a little pout. Maya looked at her phone and nodded sadly, “Yeah.”
“Can you come back after your last class is over?” Charlie asked with a hopeful smile. Maya was about to agree but then she remembered Jade. She had promised to go home with her. But Charlie’s last class was five o’clock. Jade would still be in class by then and she wouldn’t be finished with her classes for a few hours. Maybe Maya could spend some time with Charlie before she had to go meet Jade to go home.
“I can try,” Maya said, “I can stay for a few hours but I can’t stay long. I have to help out a friend tonight.”
“That’s fine,” Charlie said. He leaned forward and kissed her lips, “I’ll see you then.”
Charlie walked away and Maya got back into her car and drove back to her school. When she got back to her school, she found Audrey pretty easily. She was sitting alone finishing her lunch. Maya sat down next to her and without saying anything, Audrey pushed one of her granola bars towards her.
“Sorry I didn’t eat with you today,” Maya said.
“It’s fine,” Audrey replied, “Today has gone just fine.”
“Well that’s good,” Maya watched Audrey stand up and wrinkled her eyebrows as Audrey stumbled a little and winced, “Are you ok?”
Audrey attempted to rub her knees but stopped herself, straightening up, “Yeah I’m ok. My legs just fell asleep. That’s all.”
Maya crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow, “I don’t believe that. There’s something you’re not telling me. Spill it.”
“I fell down today and messed up my knees,” Audrey replied, looking at everything but Maya as she spoke, “It’s really no big deal.”
“I still don’t believe you,” Maya said, “What really happened? Did those girls do something?”
Audrey hesitated before nodding but Maya knew damn well that Audrey was lying. Maya jumped out of her seat and threw her arms up into the air, “Why are you protecting these girls Audrey? It doesn’t make any sense!”
“I’m not protecting them,” Audrey mumbled, rubbing her arm, “First of all, they’re already threatening me just because of a stupid contest. What are they going to do to me for telling the dean? And second of all, I don’t even know their names. It’ll be pointless.”
“Audrey,” Maya sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose, “Listen to me. I know you haven’t listened to the fifty other people that have said the same goddamn thing but go. Tell. The. Dean. Now they’re physically hurting you.”
“Maybe I should just make this easier and not go to London,” Audrey said, hanging her head, “They’ll stop if I do.”
“Oh that’s it,” Maya stormed off and Audrey scrambled to catch up with her, “Maya! Stop! I don’t need you to fight this for me.”
“Well you’re not gonna do it!” Maya shouted, throwing her arm away when Audrey tried to grab it, “So I have to!”
Maya sped up and Audrey couldn’t keep up with her. She looked around for a solution and found the closest thing to one, “Professor Brooks!”
Tom turned around, confused for a minute that Audrey wasn’t calling him by his first name and then he rolled his eyes at himself, remembering why she hadn’t. Audrey grabbed his arms and pointed in the direction Maya had gone, “You’ve gotta help me. Maya is going to find these girls and beat the s**t out of them. I tried stopping her but she’s really strong when she’s angry.”
“Why does she want to beat these girls up?” Tom asked. Audrey grabbed his wrist and started running. He struggled to keep up at first but managed to pick up the pace. Audrey didn’t answer him. She just continued dragging him along with her in her search for a very angry, possibly homicidal Maya. Luckily, she wasn’t hard to find. Audrey eventually heard some yelling and had this feeling it was Maya.
“What do you think you’re ******** doing hurting my friend?!” Maya screamed. Both of the girls stared at her with wide eyes. Audrey couldn’t tell if they were angry and terrified of Maya, “What right do you have to do s**t like that?! What the ******** is wrong with you?!”
“What do you know about it?” one of them asked, crossing her arms. Maya started laughing at that comment. She laughed for awhile and it was freaking these two girls out.
“I’m Audrey’s ******** friend you stupid b***h!” Maya raised her hand and swung her arm, slapping the girl hard in her face. She had been chewing gum and Maya had smacked it right out of her mouth. The other one turned to run off but Maya had a hold of her shirt and yanked her back so she could give her the same treatment.
“Do something!” Audrey begged, shoving Tom a little. Tom ran over to Maya and wrapped both arms around her waist, lifting her up off the ground so she couldn’t continue hitting them. When he picked her up, she used her legs instead, kicking the air angrily, “Let go of me! I’m not done with them!”
“Maya, Maya, Maya! Stop it!” Tom said, lowering his voice to hope it calmed Maya down. He kept her up in the air until she finally stopped and he set her down, still keeping his arms around her. He looked at the two girls over his shoulder, “Vanessa! Elizabeth! Get out of here now!”
They did as he said and took off running before Tom would let Maya go completely, “Maya what were you thinking starting a fight?!”
“Didn’t Audrey tell you what those two have done to her?!” Maya shouted.
“She told me about them throwing sandwiches at her,” Tom said. He paused and turned around to look at Audrey, “There’s more?”
“They egged her car yesterday and they shoved her today!” Maya continued, “And they want her to forget about that trip to London if she wants them to stop doing this!”
Tom stared at Audrey the entire time Maya spoke. Tom grabbed Audrey’s wrist and headed for his classroom. Tom was walking too fast for Audrey to keep up so he was basically just dragging her across campus until they got to his classroom.
“Tom I have to get to my next class,” Audrey headed for the door but Tom was already standing there blocking it, “Tom please! I don’t have time for this!”
“Why didn’t you tell me they did those things?” Tom asked, “And why didn’t you go to the dean before you could get hurt?!”
“Because they’ll get a smack on the wrist and they’ll be let go,” Audrey said, “And then they’ll do the same things all over again unless I move schools!”
“You think anyone of us would let that happen to you?” Tom said, grabbing onto Audrey’s face, “I don’t want you to let this happen anymore Audrey. It breaks my heart that I have to sit here while it happens.”
Tears began to fall down Audrey’s cheeks, “I know. I’m just scared.”
“I know,” Tom pulled Audrey in and hugged her tight, “And another thing. Don’t you ever give up that summer trip. No matter what anyone says, you earned it fairly. I did nothing to rig it. You trust me right?”
Audrey nodded, “I trust you.”
Jade was having a long stressful afternoon at work but it was only stressful because she was paranoid and had begged her boss to not make her go into that back room. She wanted to be surrounded by people, which is something she had never said before. But even with customers and other employees surrounding her, she still felt like someone was standing there staring at her and following her wherever she went. At times like this, she normally would’ve called Norman just so she could hear the sound of his voice and feel safe. She didn’t know if she was allowed to do that anymore. But she grabbed her phone and locked herself in the employee bathroom anyway and called him.
“Jade?” Norman’s voice was urgent, “Are you ok? What’s the matter?”
“No I’m fine, nothing’s wrong,” Jade said, “I’ve just been paranoid and you had given me your number for this purpose. I just wanted to hear your voice.”
“Do you want me to go over there?” Norman asked, “Just so there’s someone to talk to?”
“That won’t be necessary,” Jade said, “I just needed to hear your voice for a second. I think I can make it until I get back to school.”
“Let me know when you’re coming back,” he said. After he spoke, Jade heard people suddenly talking and she knew another lecture was about to begin. She then heard a door close and the voices were muffled, “I’ll wait for you at the gate so you won’t be alone.”
“You don’t need to do that for me,” Jade muttered.
“I know I don’t have to but I want to,” Norman replied, “I want you to be safe Jade. Just make sure you’re surrounded by people.”
“Already done,” Jade said, “Now get to class Norman. I’ll see you when I get back,” she hung up the phone and stuck it in her back pocket. She would manage the rest of the afternoon now that she had his voice in her head. That sounded odd but it put her at ease so she’d be as weird as she wanted.
“I’ll see you Sunday!” Jade called to her boss as she grabbed her bag at the end of her shift. She changed back into her street clothes and headed out to her car, texting Norman to tell him she was on her way so they could meet at the front gate. She walked through the dark parking lot digging for her keys. When she stuck her hand in her bag, she felt something papery inside. She couldn’t remember leaving anything like a receipt or a note or anything inside her bag. Her heart pounded as she slowly pulled this paper out of her bag. It was a white envelope with her name written on the back. She ripped it open and pulled out a small piece of folded paper. All it said was: You’re going to regret this.
After she crumpled up the paper and shoved it down to the bottom of her bag, she heard something that sounded like a twig snapping. She turned around, going in circles trying to find the source. Nothing seemed out of place. The wind was blowing the trees and bushes around so she couldn’t tell where the snapping came from. She finally found her keys and took off running down the parking lot. Her thoughts were so chaotic she forgot where she’d even parked the damn thing. She finally found it parked underneath a tree in the far corner of the parking lot. She was never going to do that again. Her cold, clammy hands shoved the key into the ignition and sped off before anything had the opportunity to catch up. For the entire drive back to school, she couldn’t make herself stop crying.
Sooooo.....I don't like how I started all this with Jade but I'm gonna start small and work my way up when it comes to severity (is that a word? Did I even spell that right? Oh well haha!) because reading these articles, it says that a stalker could beat, rape, or kill a victim. But, I'm not sure if David is capable of killing and raping seems to be...too far in this case. Maybe beating but again, I don't think David is capable of it. Well, maybe he could beat some a** but I don't know. I'll figure it out. I'm gonna read more articles and figure it out. So much research man.
And I finally came up with names for Audrey's tormentors. Vanessa is actually based off this girl who was really mean to me in the sixth grade and Elizabeth was a friend of hers. Which is funny because I ended up going to high school with Elizabeth and she asked me if I had remembered her and I was like "....I remember your b***h friend who kicked me for no reason." also, she asked me if I was bi? I mean, there's nothing wrong with being bi, but it's an odd question. ANYWAYS, I just thought of people I hate and after one name I'm not going to mention, I remembered Vanessa LOL! Also...my OTP is coming back man. I ship that s**t.
And Maya...oh Maya...trapped in a love triangle. Life would be hard for me too if I thought I saw my ex crying over me. But then I feel bad for Charlie. Decisions, decisions.
