Chapter Thirty-Nine
Jade had gone home and grabbed an overnight bag and had gone back to Norman’s house. She was still horribly shaken by what she had seen tonight and she was convinced Maya would be furious with her and Norman had to keep telling her Maya wouldn’t be upset if Norman gave her a check for the damages and she wouldn’t even be angry with Jade. She’d be angry with David for trashing the room. Jade would be perfectly fine.
They pulled up his driveway and Norman grabbed Jade’s bag and led her up the porch into his house, tossing his keys onto the coffee table, “You can go to bed if you want.”
“I’m not tired,” Jade said, sitting down on his couch, “I’m a little too traumatized to sleep. I know it’s stupid.”
Norman sat down next to her and grabbed her hands, “No it’s not stupid. Tonight was definitely traumatizing. Tomorrow before school we’ll go back to the house and get some pictures for you to show the police. You were lucky though. You weren’t there when he showed up. And if he tries to come here, I’ll be here to protect you.”
Norman wrapped his arm around Jade and pulled her closer. She wiped some tears from her eyes and squeezed him tight, “This is just complete bullshit. Maya and Audrey were right about him. And you even tried to tell me he was doing all of this to me. Why don’t I ever listen?”
“It was an unexpected twist,” Norman said, “It’s hard to believe that someone who was your friend and boyfriend would do this. I wouldn’t have guessed either if I was in your shoes. He’s obviously not all there. But you’re here now and you’re safe.”
“Thank you,” Jade lifted her head and kissed Norman’s cheek. They stared at each other for the longest time without saying a word. Jade finally grabbed onto the back of his neck and smashed her lips against his, pushing him down onto his back. She felt his hands move his hands up her hips and stopping at her waist. She had missed the feeling of his lips against hers and she was able to finally calm down and forget tonight’s horrific events.
Maya had gone back home late that night after a nice dinner with Charlie even though she was horribly distracted and Charlie kept having to get her attention because she would just drift off. She couldn’t keep herself from thinking about Richard. She was so conflicted. She loved both these men and it would be impossible to choose between them. If Richard had just kept his mouth shut, she wouldn’t have to think so hard about this. Before Charlie left her, he asked her, “This isn’t the first time you’ve been acting strange around me. Are you sure you’re ok?”
“I’m totally fine Charlie,” Maya said as she unlocked her car and opened her door, “School just takes up all of my attention. You know how it is.”
Charlie crossed his arms when a cold breeze flew by and he nodded as he shivered a little, “Yeah. We’ll I’ll call you later. These next couple days are gonna be hell. I don’t know when we’ll be able to see each other.”
“I know what you mean,” Maya chuckled, “I’ll see you later Charlie.”
Before Maya could get into her car, Charlie grabbed her and kissed her with more passion than what she had been used to coming from him. He had a firm but gentle grip on her waist and he yanked her closer to him so she was pressed against him. She wasn’t sure exactly how to react to this but she went with it anyway, resting her hands on his shoulders. Charlie broke away and gave her one more small kiss on her lips, “I’ll see you soon Maya.”
Maya nodded and he moved away from her and walked off without a word. She got into her car and felt even worse than she had before. She had just backed herself into a corner and she had no idea how she was going to get out of it. She couldn’t just break someone’s heart and either way, someone was going to get hurt. She decided she should just go home and sleep on it and hopefully come to a decision in the morning. She pulled up the driveway and saw the lights on in the house. She assumed Jade and Norman had just shown up. But when she opened the door, she found the house completely empty. She rolled her eyes and groaned, “Jesus Jade. She can’t learn how to turn off a light before she leaves?”
She walked into her room but stopped when she passed the guest room. She looked into the room and almost fell back to the floor. The guest room was trashed. The window was broken and the glass was all over the bed frame. The mattress was turned over and clothes and bedding were thrown all over the floor. Her bookshelf was scratched up and shelves had been removed and thrown across the room. Maya knew Jade was incapable of doing something like this and she couldn’t touch anything until she took some pictures for Jade to keep with all the pictures and everything else Jade would have to keep.
“This sucks!” she shouted as she grabbed her camera and started snapping pictures of the damaged room. She was making money to help her dad pay for the house but she couldn’t pay to fix the damages on her own and she couldn’t let her dad find out about this.
Jade was waiting for Maya and opened her mouth to start talking but Maya stopped her, “Look Jade, I saw the guest room last night when I came home. I’m not mad at you. I mean, I was pretty pissed when I saw the trashed room but I’m definitely not mad at you. It’s just gonna suck to try and pay for the damage before my dad sees it.”
Norman came up behind Jade with his checkbook in his hands, “Don’t worry about it. I’ll pay for it.”
“Wow, that’s really nice of you Professor Winters,” Maya said. Norman flicked his wrist as he wrote on his check. He ripped it out of his checkbook and handed it to her.
“It’s really no big deal,” he replied, tucking the checkbook and his pen into his coat pocket.
“And I’m gonna stop by before I go to lunch so I can get pictures,” Jade said. Maya held up her digital camera and tossed it to Jade, “Way ahead of you. I took pictures as soon as I saw it. And then I picked up your clothes for you and put the mattress back and changed the sheets and cleaned up the glass. It’s all ready for you to come back.”
“Thanks Maya for putting up with this,” Jade sighed, “I need to be getting to class now. I’ll see you later.”
Maya watched Jade walk off with Norman and she headed for her first class, looking at Richard’s name on her list of contacts in her phone. She sat down at a bench a few feet away from her class and sighed, her finger hovering over the call button. She’d been thinking about calling him just to settle things. Maybe spending some time with both of them would help her make some kind of decision. She didn’t know where the logic was in that but she didn’t have any other ideas. She pressed down on the call button and waited for what felt like hours before Richard picked up, “Maya. I didn’t think you would actually call me.”
“I need to make this quick because I have class in a few minutes,” Maya said, “I just want to meet up with you for lunch later.”
“Who keyed your car?” Jade asked Audrey. The two of them were walking together to class and Audrey jumped a bit at the sudden question. Jade paused and then added, “I parked next to you this morning and saw it. Looks pretty bad. Do your parents know that happened?”
“No,” Audrey replied quickly, “I’m hoping to get it fixed today before I go home so they don’t find out about it.”
Jade took a bite out of a chocolate doughnut she’d bought on the way to class and licked the melted chocolate off the corners of her lips, “Well who keyed your car?”
“Remember how I told you about those girls who ruined my shirt and you bought me that sweatshirt?” she asked. Jade’s chewing slowed down and she nodded, suddenly very interested, “Well that’s who keyed my car.”
“Are you serious?” Jade said, “Well why didn’t you tell the dean? You should’ve told the dean earlier when they just ******** up your shirt. Now they’ve seriously done some damage. Don’t protect them anymore Audrey.”
“Well, they’re not gonna stop bugging me unless I give up that London trip,” Audrey said, “Maya even beat them up which I didn’t want but she did it anyway. I just don’t know what to do.”
Jade sighed heavily, “You could start by telling the goddamn dean Audrey.”
“They’re gonna get a slap on the wrist Jade,” Audrey grumbled, “And then they get off.”
“Not for damaging your car,” Jade said.
“Oh, so they’ll get a slap on the wrist and they’ll have to pay to get my car fixed,” Audrey replied sarcastically, “It’s not gonna do any good.”
“I’m just glad all they’re doing it ruining your clothes and your car,” Jade said, “They’re not trying to hurt you or anything.”
Suddenly, they were stopped by Vanessa stepping in front of them. Audrey grabbed onto Jade’s wrist and started to walk around her, “I don’t have time for this right now Vanessa.”
“Vanessa? This is the girl who’s harassing you about ******** London?” Jade snapped, yanking her arm away. Jade looked at Vanessa up and down and chuckled, “Maya did a fine job on your face. Looks a lot better now.”
“Thanks,” Vanessa replied, “You and Audrey have a lot in common. You ******** a teacher for some good grades too didn’t you? I saw the pictures that were up all over campus and I also saw you ripping them down. No denying it.”
“I never have denied it assface,” Jade snarled, “However, there’s absolutely no reason to ******** with Audrey since I know for a fact she never did anything with Professor Brooks. She won that fair and square. I don’t even understand why you give a s**t. You weren’t a part of that competition. What, was your boyfriend a part of it or something?”
“He was working with Brooks and everything,” Vanessa said. Jade looked at Audrey and they both said “Ohhhhh,” in unison, suddenly understanding Vanessa’s frustrations.
“Even so, there is no reason to ruin Audrey’s clothes and ******** up her car,” Jade said, “You’re such a dumbass, fighting your boyfriend’s battles for him.”
“And what are you doing right now?” Vanessa asked, gesturing to a very silent Audrey, “You’re doing all the talking.”
“Jade, I’ve already told her the rumors aren’t true,” Audrey said, “She’s not gonna listen to reason.”
“No I just don’t listen to whores,” Vanessa looked from Audrey to Jade. When Jade swung her fist, she felt arms wrap around hers and pull her away from Vanessa and no matter how much Jade squirmed and kicked the air, she couldn’t let them to release her. One of Vanessa’s little friends came up behind Audrey with a bucket and dumped its contents on her head. Dirt fell on Audrey’s head and slid down to her neck and arms and falling onto her feet. Jade continued fighting but these guys Vanessa had holding onto her were very strong. One of the others, who Jade recognized as Elizabeth, came up behind Audrey and a bucket of water was dumped on top of the dirt, creating mud which dripped even faster off of Audrey’s fingers and the tips of her hair. Once they had done their damage, the two boys hanging onto Jade’s arms let her go and dropped her. She quickly ran towards Audrey and wrapped an arm around her as if it would cover the mess up, quickly taking her away as Vanessa and her friends laughed. Tom was standing outside his classroom as Audrey and Jade ran by.
“What happened?!” Tom shouted as he ran to catch up with them. Jade stopped momentarily, panting as she replied, “Just find something for Audrey to change into. And another thing, make sure Maya does not see you and do not tell her this happened!”
Tom nodded and ran off to do as Jade said and Jade quickly took Audrey to a bathroom to hide until Tom came back with something. With Audrey’s dirty and wet face, it was incredibly easy to hide the tears that were now pouring down her face.
Longer chapter than usual. And I felt that Jade should be present since Maya was kind of...half present for the last episode of "Vanessa Being a b***h" show. I wonder if this was too much? Nah, I tend to believe that bullies like her are capable of just about anything, including turning you into a mud pie. Plus, I mean Vanessa threw food at Audrey at one point. Vanessa sucks at this s**t. Anyways, enjoyyyyyy blaugh
