Way way back when MTG was a fresh game a little boy was extremely board while listening to his father preach to the congregation about trivial actives that take away from their walk with the lord. Ya-da-ya-da-ya-da.
Bored to near tears said boy pulls from his pockets a small deck and pretends to play against friends. It was difficult, but after a while he began to really find himself immerged in the imagery and fascinated with this new game. Unbeknownst to our loved little boy service ended and his father approached.
Seeing his son's eyes and a new found obsessive like love, the Pastor became enraged. How dare HIS son embarrass him in church! How dare he play games while he should be devoting every waking hour to his devotions! The enraged man swept up the boys cards, and crammed them into his pocket. "Go get in the car, we'll talk when we get home."
The night dragged on, and the boy was finally called down from his room. In the kitchen his family sat around the table, his father, mother, grandparents, and two younger siblings. "I have made many calls to research this game." His father finally announced. "Magic? Magic that Gathering? Imps? Demons? Witches? Faeries? You bring this suggestion of evil into the house of God?"
The boy’s mouth became slack as he starred at his father, "Their just cards, Dad."
"And the Devil is just trying to help you, help you right into hell."
Not wanting to be disrespectful, the boy bit his tongue. For an hour the father preached at his children, until finally he concluded that pretending to play with magic was just as evil as doing the deed and with that he threw away precious cards that would someday be worth a pretty penny.
The next Sunday followed and the Pastor spoke of how distractions led children down the path of sin. He spoke of a card game in which kids summoned spirits and entities that where as unholy as they were beautiful. "We must protect our children for they are naive and easy seduced, we must make sure no children begin down the path of evil, and we will start by ensuring that this 'innocent game' knows that no good Christian family will accept it's atrocity in that hands of our children."
Good Christians didn't play games like MTG? It caught like brush fire; Good Christians didn't touch magic be it in potions or cards! Years passed and everything like the brilliant game of battling cards was condemned, then everything that suggested magic followed it's predecessors into the Christian hell. It became an epidemic of morons bashing and reproving without just reason or research! Anything that threatened their status of good Christianity had to be horrible.
A battle against entertainment, against good fun, all because a father was insulted that his own son would rather play a game of cards that listen to him speak the word of God!
(Sorry about the long post! I felt inspired! LoL )
