Scarlet Gift Chapter 10
Dawn rose quickly the next morning, not long after Soran, the lone “dragon fighter”, had returned to the campsite after a supposed scouting mission. Rune was increasingly more and more frustrated, as he still had not found the chance to wake Rath or Thatz and let them know what he had overheard the night before. Kiari, or so it seemed, did not sleep much at all, staying awake the entire night watching the flames flickering, casting increasingly suspicious glances over at the ‘I am just pretending to be asleep’ form of the water Dragon Knight. Three words kept running through her head as she considered her possibilities. Rune was not about to let them escape, even if it was to go hack the demon lord into little pieces and roast his head over a barbeque, as promised in the letter she had created. She turned back to the fire, staring almost through it at Rath, watching his chest rise slowly with each breathe.
There had to be some way to get him on his own. Making sure her hands were completely hidden from Rune behind her, Kiari summoned a small box from her icy void. Sighing, she opened the box, her ears focused on the false shallow breathing behind her. The sun’s early morning light caught the gem, even the one hanging in the hollow of her throat, causing an almost eerie glow from deep within.
She stared at it, entranced, drawn into the beautiful blood red colour. Her breathing slowed, and she went into what seemed to be a trance, yet her mind was racing hither and fro, barely focusing on one moment in time for more than a few seconds, tracing through her years upon years of memories, as though the light within the gem itself was looking for something. One sad memory upon another passed before her eyes, along with a few sparse happy ones from before she had run into the alchemist. Here and there were those that even she herself did not recognize.
Finally she could not handle it any more, tearing her now damp eyes away from the stone, shoving it back into its case, and ripping the one around her own neck off. She flipped it over in her fingers a few time before tossing it towards the undergrowth over by the very deep sleeping Thatz. She clutched her head a moment, tempted to throw the box into the flickering flames that barely warmed her feet.
Rune was watching all this, trying to figure out what she was doing. She shifted her weight and rose swiftly to her feet, too gracefully for the demon within her, so thought he. She turned, and the aforementioned Knight quickly shut his eyes and kept his slow, but unconvincing, breathing steady. When the clicking of her black heels came to silence right beside his shoulders, he chanced a peek up at her.
She was not looking at Rune. Not even looking down at him. She was fixated at some point off in the woods behind him, silent, her eyes sad and troubled. He pushed himself up and glanced behind him, verifying that his instincts were right and that no one was there. He looked up at her, hoping to follow her eyes to the source of her captivity. But her eyes were oddly blank, brimming with unfallen tears that she seemed struggling to hold back. “Kiari?” he said quietly, reaching out to touch her hand.
She jumped and looked down at him, as thourlugh she was surprised to be standing there. She gave him a false smile, swiped angrily at her eyes and sat down with her back to him. “Sorry Rune,” she said quietly, staring back into the fire that lay a dozen feet away.
Rune faltered. This was in no way what he was expecting from someone who he had overheard plotting with the rouge alchemist just a few hours before. Something had completely changed in the way she held herself. Her aura seemed darker and more troubled than it had been. Suspicious as he was of her, he simply could not ignore the pain that she seemed to be emanating from her very being. It was just against his nature.
