Someone once commented that a fantasy author isn't as good as a regular author because they "don't understand the human psyche enough to create believable characters."
Um, hello? That is the basis of fantasy literature!! Creating convincing characters in convincing landscapes needs more creativity and knowledge of the psyche and natural world than any other genre.
In creating new worlds, one must understand the way nature works, where certain plants grow, what causes what climate and weather changes, etc. To create new peoples, fantasy authors must have an understanding of diverse cultures as well as linguistic skills.
As you can see, I think that the hardest genre to write in is fantasy or sci-fi, and they should be given much more respect than they receive. Anyone can create a character or write a story in our world because our world and its cultures and climates already exist. But, it takes someone truly talented to create their own world and people it convincingly.
Now that my rant is over....^_^ Have a good day!
