I was all alone this weekend. I had plans with people but they cancled to spend time to do something else. So I spent it all wrighting this story -----
Quinn. . .
She woke with his name in her mind. The alarm clock wailed out it's repeated electronic cry beside her. With one hand she flipped the little switch on the machine. Behind her still-closed eyes she kept the darling image in place. Quinn, darling Quinn… how clearly she could picture him, his sweet, charming smile and the dimples that played around it. She could remember easily the eyes that started out green and changed to blue in spikes of color. How those eyes could sparkle and play and easily cause her to fall with in them. He had dark brown hair and always seemed to be clean-shaven. Finally she forced her eyes to open and pulled her aching body to its feet. The telecom screen told her that it was Wednesday. Wednesday meant that it had been exactly two years since she had seen Quinn. It had been two years since she had been held in his lithe arms. Two whole years had passed since she had been interred on The Neptune. The Neptune. Just thinking the name made her remember. Quinn and she had been the only two of the passengers to survive the massive explosion of the main engine. They had been trapped together in the air sealed remnants of the rear cargo chamber. Some how they had survived the ravenous ship rats together, along with the tiny air supply and lack of decent rations. She had fallen in love with him in the three weeks that they had survived. It wasn't until after they were rescued thanks to their combined talents that everything changed. Quinn was famous, he was a hero, he was a valiant soldier in the galactic army. Everyone knew Quinn. Then he was gone, just like that. There was no goodbye, after the celebrations and congratulations to him for surviving yet another harrowing experience he was gone. She was alone, and no one had even noticed her, even if that was the way she liked things it stung. She padded across her soft carpet and flipped the switch in the bathroom. As the room filled with light she crossed the chilled tile to stand in front of the mirror. Her eyes flashed with rage and tears as she recalled learning about all the other women he had survived with. None of them had loved him in anyway but the one. She loved him entirely, but that made no difference. She ground her teeth before brushing them vigorously. As she finished and headed to the shower, dropping pieces of clothing along the way, she recalled what had lead her from there to this point. Her search for him had meant near-death for her on several occasions. The places he had been weren't safe for anyone. She had managed to survive every time. . . except for one. The temple of Mara had been her undoing. Xyn had died, but that was not the end for her. Something had happened in the temple of some goddess of women. Xyn didn't think she was exactly human anymore. The water coursed down her frame and pooled at her feet before traveling down the drain. It felt chill on her skin. She wrapped a pallid arm around herself and recalled the piercing blue-green eyes that almost seemed to glow. She tilted back her slightly pointed chin and sighed a cloud of cold air. Frost spread across the bottom of the shower. It was time to get out. Tiny laces of ice spread from her feet as she stepped to the shower, retrieving her tower from the wall with her right hand and wrapping it around herself as she walked. ''Quinn….'' She breathed, staring at her slightly pointed ears, her swept back black hair, which spread from the widow's peak at the point of her forehead. She felt the tiny fangs in her mouth with her tongue and felt the weight of tiny horns upon her head. ''Do you know what you have caused to happen to me, dear Quinn? Have you an inkling of what my love for you has cost me? Have they told you yet, my dearest love? I will come for you, but it is not your love I wish to claim.'' She pressed her hand to the glass of the mirror, which chilled so fast it cracked. A small smile curved her lips in her distorted reflection. ''I am coming.'' She whispered, pulling back her lips to reveal her fangs in a deadly smile. ''Be ready, we shall see if you can survive yet another life threatening event.''
------
''Keep up rookie.'' Quinn called over his shoulder. Savin wanted to cry at the burning ache in her side, but she doggedly gritted her teeth and continued trotting to keep pace with the older man. She simply didn't have the breath to inform him for the sixth time that she was a highly trained special-ops agent who had been with the army for five years. He was older, and had been in the army longer, and that was all that mattered to him. ''If you're going to be my partner you're going to have to be in better shape than that.'' He continued with his brisk pace. She didn't bother to inform him that she had passed all her monthly fitness tests either, it probably wouldn't matter to him. ''Yes Mr. Hanson.'' she repeated for what must have been the fiftieth time. ''Quinn!!!'' The Commander called from across the landing platform, ''I've got news for you. The latest book of your memoirs has been set into the market. It's already looking to be another smash hit.'' He grinned. Quinn grinned in response and Savin had to force herself not to scowl. Quinn might be a hero, but he hadn't written any of his memoirs. The man who had written them also painted Quinn doing a lot of things hadn't. Savin sighed and tried to keep it from being obvious. She had been with Quinn six months, and not a single thing she had done had been featured in anything. It wasn't all that bad, but to have Quinn refer to her as rookie still, even when she had helped him out of at least six near-fatal instances…. She would have thought he would be just a little more appreciative. Even as the thought occurred to her she forced herself to remember that Quinn's old partner had died only a year ago. He probably wasn't over the death yet. That was when a voice called across the yard. ''Commander, Quinn!!! Something major has happened, project EVE is on the move!!!'' one of the tech scientists called. Both men suddenly went very pale and very white. ''What's project EVE?'' Savin inquired. ''Something I had hoped to never hear of again.'' Quinn responded gruffly, all of his normal charm temporarily vanished. And then they were rushing back across the landing pad to the large facility. ''What are we going to do Quinn?'' Savin asked as she was forced to keep pace again. ''I'm not sure Rookie… the solution that was supposed to be permanent has not done what we had hoped. We could all be in some major trouble. Commander? Is there anyway at all we could contact DEVA?'' ''I'll do my best Quinn.'' Commander replied.
----------------
The man whom sat before the multiple computer screens did not even turn to look at them. The frantic clicks of his typing all but overrode his words when he finally did. ''I just don't understand…. EVE has left the seventh quadrant….'' The man told them, ''Stasis has been broken by something… someone… EVE is awake….'' At his last words everyone in the room fell silent. The air in the room suddenly felt very heavy and very chill to Savin. ''EVE is now in sector 23, heading rapidly east.'' The man said, turning in his seat finally to look at the three assembled in his room. ''Has EVE left the planet yet?'' Quinn asked the man. He shook his head in response. ''No. In fact EVE is still in the facility.'' The tech control master responded gravely. Quinn's eyes narrowed suddenly. ''Then I'm going.'' He said, ''Commander, please have someone update my old ship. Rookie! Where are you?'' he asked, and she stepped forward. ''I've been here, right beside you Quinn.'' She told him with out even a trace of annoyance. ''Right, well you're going to stay here Rookie.'' ''WHAT?'' She exclaimed in shock. ''I said that you would be staying here.'' He repeated himself as he turned to give her a stern look. Savin shut her mouth and didn't argue anymore. In the back of her mind the wheels were turning. He had simply told her to stay here thus far, if she continued to argue with him he would probably pull rank on her. If she waited, and got onto his ship anyway though…. Well that was a different matter entirely. Quinn gave a satisfied nod and marched off through the compound. --------
Quinn stared down through the window of his ship at the giant ball of blue and green. This planet was so much like earth, and was once thought that it could be a safe haven. The scientists had created a human-like creature to live there, to see if humans could survive on the planet. Something had gone wrong, and the creature, named project EVE had gotten out of control. Somehow it had gotten much stronger than it had been. Now the planet, known as Gaia, was a secret planet, known to only the people with high enough clearance to know. He turned his ship down toward the planet and tightened his safety restraints. It was time to land. As he flipped the switches and turned his ship ever downward he braced his body against the turbulence of the atmosphere. Suddenly there were white clouds rushing past him, and then just as suddenly they were gone. Below him stretched the beautiful expanse of mostly untouched wilderness. Unnoticed in the cabin behind him Savin gasped in wonder. The world below sparkled and gleamed like so many jewels. It was perfect, pristine; the very epitome of what earth must have once been like. Right in the middle of it sat an old concrete facility that seemed not so much a government facility but an ancient temple to some forgotten god or goddess. Quinn steered the ship down for a landing on the landing pad that had half been reclaimed by the wilderness. He popped the safety harness off and did a quick check to make sure he had all of his equipment on him. He jumped out after the door hissed open and upward, paying no attention as Savin quickly and quietly leapt out behind him. The door shut automatically after his partner was clear. He himself did not even bother to double check that it was locked. There was no one on this planet who would steal his ship anyway. Savin grimaced and double-checked her own equipment. She didn't like how confidant Quinn seemed, especially if something was as wrong on this planet as everyone seemed to think there was. She followed Quinn as he marched to the doors of the old compound and punched the code in on the keypad. The giant doors opened with a groan of reluctance and a hiss of a releasing air lock. He stepped inside and his partner hurried after him quietly. The doors shut behind them without so much as a sound. All around them there was discarded technology. Computers, consoles, guns and scanners were all lying around on the ground. Everything was covered in a thin lair of dust. Savin breathed slowly, looking around herself with eyes wide in awe. This was one of the places Quinn had been and the place where one of his famous heroic deeds took place. They walked for several minuets before they got to the first security door. Quinn punched in the code on this door too. Then he punched it in again, and then again. The door did not so much as a groan. Savin decided that this was her chance; she snuck forward while Quinn was busy and quickly rewired the door, jumping back when he was done with what ever was in his pack. He grunted and punched the code in a last time. This time the door swung open easily. Savin grinned to herself and followed him past the first door. It was the start of the destruction. There were burned remnants of clothes and weapons lying all about the charred floor and against scorched walls. Savin let out an involuntary gasp of shock. Quinn heard the sound. He whirled around, one gun in his hand and pointed at her chest. Savin threw her hands in the air and cried, ''Hanson! It's me!'' Her eyes were wide with fear and his eyes were narrowed with suspicion. He eyed her for several more seconds that made her fear that maybe he would shoot her after all. The hero never had seemed to like her… But no, he did not shoot her. ''Rookie!'' he snarled, ''I told you to stay back at the base!''. ''Yeah Hanson… you did. But you didn't order me as an officer, you told me as a partner, and as a partner…. Well I just didn't agree.'' She gave him a tentative grin as he lowered his gun. ''I don't need some damn Rookie following me around! This is dangerous!'' he growled at her. Savin was shocked to see this side of the well-known man. Her eyes traversed his face and form and it dawned on her that that this was the real soldier. This man before her was really the hero, he was the one who saved people and worlds, not that creature who stood in front of cameras and grinned. This was a man who was not some celebrity, this was a soldier, like her, and she would not let him treat her like anything else anymore. ''I. Am. Not. A. Rookie. I am a special-ops agent who has been with the army for five years. I am your partner, and I am a soldier. I am well aware that this is a dangerous operation, which is why I came. You might be a hero, but I doubt you can do everything by yourself like those stupid books seem to think you can.'' She stated with a stern and dispassionate tone. ''Savin…. If you don't go home right now so help me I'll-'' he abruptly stopped as Savin swung her gun up at a door across the room. She fired six shots in rapid succession before the first of the creatures fell. The rest shuffled into the room. One of them shambled at Quinn, who barely got his gun up before the creature was almost on him. A jaw full of sharp teeth snapped at him wildly as he got off one shot and then another. It fell, but behind it he could see that there were at least five. Savin was surrounded with her back to the wall. He began firing at the ones that were left, fearing, knowing as he did so that it was too late already. He saw her gun click repeatedly. She was out of ammo. Quinn knew that she was dead, and then she planted a foot on the chest of one of the furry shambling creatures and pushed. The creature didn't go anywhere, but she launched herself into the air. Another foot landed on the top muzzle of one of the creatures, tossing her even further up. The seasoned soldier watched in disbelief as she managed to unload and reload the guns while flying through the air. She twisted her torso after the last magazine was in the cartridge and began firing again. Another two of the creatures fell before her feet touched the floor. She emptied the two pistols a second time and none were left standing. One was still writhing on the floor and attempting to claw it's way over to them. Savin, young Savin, walked over and fired a last shot into the creature's head, ending its pain. Quinn could only stare in wonder. This was not the Rookie that had been tailing after him for six months. ''I see… I suppose we should be moving on now…'' he muttered to himself. Savin grinned in response. ''Oh, and my name is Lieutenant Corporal Geniss Savin'' she added triumphantly. He gave her a sour look. ''Now you're pushing it rookie.'' He growled. She sighed, but didn't push it any farther. After all, you can only push things so far before something breaks. He grumbled under his breath and started walking, purposely making his strides long so that she had to trot to keep up again. They walked in silence until they reached the next security gate. ''Hanson?'' Savin asked, ''What is EVE?'' as she paced behind him. ''EVE is what happens when the army thinks they are powerful enough to play god.'' Quinn spoke with out looking at his partner. ''So…. EVE is some sort of genetic?'' her brows contracted in confusion. ''Yes Rookie. EVE is a genetic. She is something more than that as well.'' He leaned against the door on his shoulder, looking at her with his piercing purple-blue eyes that were narrowed in remembrance. ''She was created here, to see if it were possible for human kind to live on this planet successfully with little tools. We put her here and left leaving her with only a life monitor… In those first few months we were gone something happened. The life monitor registered that EVE was dead, and we came looking to see what happened. When we got here we found her… and so much more.'' His eyes were far away. He gazed at something only he could remember. ''EVE had grown exponentially more powerful some how. She decimated our troops. Only… every woman who died came back…. Different. They came back in strange ways, as strange creatures. Vampires, Harpies, Sirens, Naga, you name it. We ended up killing them all again and burning the bodies, whether they were dangerous or not. Then we fled. We thought we could solve the problem by putting the entire place in a vacuumed stasis. It worked for years… and now something has changed.'' He sighed and shoved himself upright. Savin stared at him with her brows still furrowed, but in thought. ''Is that why you wanted me to stay behind?'' she asked. He nodded, and she thought about it for a while. ''I guess I will just have to be careful to not die…'' she grinned, but he didn't seem to acknowledge her humor. Savin waited for him to respond but heard only silence. Eventually she nodded and turned back to her scanner. ''The plans say we should be coming up on the room with the top of the underground waterfall that wasn't completely converted.'' He grunted and began to enter the long code into the computer. ''I remember… we couldn't convert it because the moisture kept ruining the electrical equipment. We didn't have enough plasma equipment to completely convert it, so we moved on past it.'' He responded. She nodded and waited. The doors creaked a groaned. Both soldiers jumped back as a sudden surge of electricity flashed across the door in crackling blue arcs. The door's automatic hinges screamed in protest. The door shuddered open inch by inch at a time, sometimes jumping several inches. It came to a groaning halt only half open. The electricity crackled one last time and faded. Faded green and blue light flowed from the half open door. Mist rolled out around their feet and the roar of the waterfall could be heard. It was as if they had stepped into an entirely new world. Savin stepped through the portal and onto the soft mossy rock and tile. Moisture condensed on the stone walls, trickling down when it was too heavy. Quinn stepped through after Savin. ''Some one has been here, two some ones or the same person twice.'' His hand lifted and a finger pointed to the open doors on the opposite end, and the dual set of footprints through the moss and dust. ''Do you think it was EVE? Or was it the one who woke EVE?'' Savin asked him as he moved past her with her voice echoing slightly. Every step he took was accented by the soft wet crunching of the moss. ''I'm not sure Rookie. I hope to what ever being watches over this place that it was not EVE.'' He continued forward and she followed him, her eyes on her scanner. His eyes were on the door when he caught the first movement. Before he could say anything Savin yelled, ''The scanner is picking up life forms, many of them!!!'' while at the same time she was putting the scanner in its pouch and drawing her pistol. Quinn drew his own pistol and the first of the shambling bear-things were through the door. The things shuffled, their large feet seemed too big for them to pick up properly. He knew from experience that the appearance was deceptive and that they could move quickly at anytime they wished. They all flexed their hands with the too-long claws that adorned them. Some of the creatures reached out to them. Many of the creatures walked half hunched over, others completely upright, and all the ranges in-between. One of the creatures centered its beady black eyes at Quinn and opened its bear like muzzle to growl at him. The rounded shrunken ears flicked in his direction. He fired into its face and it fell, only to be replaced by another. There were scores of the creature. He tossed a look in his partner's direction and saw by the look on her face that she understood the odds were hopeless as well. They fought anyway. Every creature they killed was replaced by another and then another. Green and purple blood streaked the mossy floor when Quinn saw her. She stood tall just behind the hordes of creatures. The things ignored her… or rather; they seemed to be acting on her behest. The air around her was heavy in mist and every breath she took sent a cloud into the air. She was staring at him, and she seemed oddly familiar. He couldn't place a finger on it, but she seemed to know him for certain. ''Quinn….'' She smiled and started toward him. The monsters suddenly stopped in their tracks as she came forward. The creatures parted like the red sea before her path. She came to stand in front of Quinn and smiled. It was then that her face clicked in his mind. He had spent some time with her on the remnants of a ship after someone had tried to assassinate him. She looked very different. What was her name? He knew she had been another agent…. Just not as well known as he was. ''I see you remember me…. Or at least, partially.'' She smiled lightly at him and revealed two tiny fangs. It hit him with shock… her appearance was wildly different, different in the way that the women who had fallen here before had become. She must have been the one to awaken EVE! ''My name is Xyn… '' She informed him. As soon as the name left her lips it sparked in his mind. ''Why did you come here Xyn?'' he asked, keeping his gun at the ready. He didn't like the look in her eyes. Xyn smiled again, but there was malice in this smile. ''I came here because I felt I loved you. I followed you because I wanted to find you. You had been here, so I came. I died here….'' She traced a hand along one of the jutting boulders. Quinn's eyes narrowed. She had confirmed his thoughts. He was still shocked at her reasoning though…. No one had ever done such a thing before, at least not with him involved. ''Who is this?'' Xyn asked, detouring from him to walk towards Savin. Savin raised her gun and pointed it at Xyn with a wary look. ''No one, just a Rookie that was tagging along with me.'' Quinn replied, seeing the anger in Xyn's eyes. Xyn looked at him sidelong and grinned. ''Is that so?'' She queried. The once-human woman turned and walked toward Quinn again, only this time she beckoned toward the creatures. ''How long do you think you could hold off all my friends? Maybe we should find out?'' Xyn asked with spite laden in her voice. Quinn's eyes grew wide. There was no way he could take on all the creatures, especially not alone. Savin was watching, and saw Xyn turn her back to her. She wasn't going to do anything at first. Then Xyn threatened Quinn. Savin knew she had to do something, Quinn was her partner, and partners looked out for one another. She took the shot. There was a cracking sound. The bullet ricocheted and thudded into a wall. Ice chips flew from Xyn's shoulder. Xyn turned around with a shriek of rage. ''You dare attack me!? Kill her!'' she ordered to the creatures. The creatures converged on Savin. They formed a mob even as she shot desperately, killing and wounding many, but not enough. Quinn roared in rage, he began firing even knowing that his efforts were in vain. He watched helplessly as the creatures carried the already torn and broken Savin to the edge of the waterfall. They held her their for a second as she came out of her daze. Then they threw her. Quinn's scream mingled with her own, his of horror, hers of terror. Over the sound of their combined scream the maniacal mirth of Xyn echoed.
------
The water rushed by her. She knew if she reached out her hand she could stick in the current of the waterfall. She didn't want to. It was roaring in her ears with the air. Savin was falling back first. The water below was rushing up to meet her and she knew when it did she would die. Even that thought didn't prepare her for when it happened. It was a lurch, coldness, and then darkness all at once. ------
Quinn's scream died off about the time that Savin's began to fade. Regrets surged through him. He didn't have time to dwell on that though. Xyn was coming toward him again. ''Now Quinn, you will come with me.'' She said with a smile. Quinn backed away from her. She suddenly scowled furiously and beckoned to the creatures that had stood by silently after throwing the young woman from the waterfall. ''You will come with me. If I give you to EVE maybe she will give me my humanity back. You are a tiny price to pay, you who have never loved, not many will truly miss you….'' She trailed off and tossed a hand to the creatures, ''Take him.'' The creatures surged forward again. He raised his gun and aimed a creature, pulled the trigger…. And the gun clicked. The gun was jammed or empty. The creatures mobbed him. He too fell into darkness. He woke to Xyn's voice singing to him. ''Wake up Quinn'' she sang, ''EVE will be coming soon and I want you to see her in all her glory.'' She smiled as he opened his eyes. He tried to sit up and realized that he was restrained. Xyn smiled again and caressed his cheek. ''It will only be a little longer my love, only a little longer.''
------
Water rippled constantly from the edge of the waterfall. It lapped quietly on the shores of the many tiny islands. The water sparkled and shone. EVE laughed. She floated above it all, her green hair floating about her. A plain linen gown adorned her as she observed. Under the water lay a woman, a girl really. Only 23…. And dead. EVE smiled again and her laugh spread around her. This one…. She was good hearted. There were no real desires in her heart that were strong. She was… happy. Wait… there was one desire. It was to help… to help a man… a man who was not even her friend. EVE smiled again. Yes, this one would be special. She would be different. EVE stretched forth a hand and beckoned. With her mind she shaped the new form and laughed again, the bell like sound echoing around her. EVE beckoned again and pair of downy white wings spread from the water as Savin surged up gasping for air. EVE drew her new creature up from the water with a thought. She saw her new daughter look up at her in awe and fear. EVE bestowed a gentle look upon the frail being. Her thoughts of love and warmth flooded into Savin, assuring her of her safety. EVE informed her through pictures and thoughts of the state of her friend and watched in satisfaction as Savin's expression grew fierce. EVE warned her daughter sternly not to harm her sister beyond what was necessary. She cupped Savin in her hands and tossed Savin into the air. Savin flew upwards and beat her wings once, twice, and then she was really flying. She soared off with a purpose. She had to stop Xyn and convince her that what she was wrong. What Xyn had become wasn't bad or wrong. Xyn didn't need to kill Quinn, and EVE wouldn't take that sacrifice anyway. Savin crested the waterfall and ascended into the room. She continued on her way, flying through the wide hallways and corridors. EVE had told her where Xyn and Quinn where. She alighted just before the room she needed to enter and folded her wings to her back. ''Xyn!'' She cried, rushing into the room. Both Xyn and Quinn looked up in startlement. ''Xyn, you're not a monster, you don't need to kill anyone to regain your humanity. You are… something like an elemental. Not good or bad, just different, that's all.'' She exclaimed. Xyn's eyes narrowed distrustfully and disbelievingly. ''You can't say that. You don't know that!'' she snarled in outrage that this woman would dare lie to her. ''I can, and I do. EVE told me!'' she told the other woman as she approached. Xyn flung up a hand and snarled. ''Stay back! It is his fault anyway!'' she growled. Savin shook her head. ''No, no Xyn, it's no one's fault.'' She coaxed. Xyn shook her head in denial, she would not be reasoned with. ''NO!'' she screeched and whirled. She flung a hand toward Quinn. Ice sped across the floor rapidly. Quinn squeezed his eyes shut, Savin yelled in protest, Xyn cried in triumph. Then there was a flash of light. Quinn opened his eyes slowly to behold what the scientists had created so long ago. She was beautiful. Flowers spread from below where she floated, her hair was green and spread behind her. Both women stared at her with rapt attention. Xyn's eyes closed in hope. EVE flooded her with warmth and love. Understanding swept through her. She bowed her head with guilt for what she would have done. Savin smiled with relief. EVE waved a hand toward Quinn and the shackles fell around his feet. He was released. At first he was indecisive. The woman like creature looked at him benignly, but he had his orders. He drew his gun and aimed. EVE's smile disappeared. Her wrath filled the room and he knew for one terrible instant that this was going to be the end of everything for him. And suddenly Savin was between himself and EVE. To his further shock, Xyn was holding him, shielding him from the wrath of the goddess-creature. Both women cried wordlessly to EVE. EVE scowled but nodded. Yes, she would spare the man if that was what they both desired… on one condition. ~''Leave man-creature. Never return to this place. My home is for those who come in peace for peace, any who wish otherwise will face the consequences. ''~ her mind-voice filled the room. Quinn was stunned. Awe filled him. This creature that scientists had created for nothing more than an experiment had grown and evolved into something entirely new… something like a goddess. That was impossible, but the proof was before his eyes. Xyn took his hand and Savin claimed the other. ''We are going with him EVE.'' Savin declared bravely. EVE's expression was briefly one of sorrow. She understood and nodded. There would be other children that would stay and flourish under her care. ~''Close your eyes then children''~ EVE bade them. None of the three wished to disobey and thus closed their eyes one by one. There was yet another rush of warmth and then there was birdsong and fresh air around them. They each opened their eyes to discover that they were again on the surface. Quinn's ship stood before them. As they boarded the ship Quinn cast one last look behind them. The facility was covered in vines and other plants like it had been there for eons. The doors stood halfway open, both welcoming and foreboding. He turned away and took his seat. He turned the ship on and buckled his safety harness. As the ship came away from the ground he couldn't help but wonder what future EVE had planed for this world and if the Galactic Army would ever be welcome here again.
