Ok, it's more commonly known as sunshine toast, but I grew up callin' it an egg in the basket, so that's what I'm makin'.
Ok, Ingredients!
1. Egg
2. Slice of bread (I'm usin' whole wheat in the example, but any will do)
3. Seasonin' salt (normal salt is fine, I'm just a sucker for flavor)
4. Butter
5. Fryin' pan (about the same size as the slice of toast, makes things easier)
6. Flipper
7. Wine glass (optional)
8. Plate, knife, and fork (ya gotta eat it somehow)
Steps, with perty pictures!
Step One:
Take the wine glass and press it against the middle of the bread. Twist slightly until you cut through the entire slice of bread, then slowly bring glass up. Save the little circle piece of bread for later. Also, if you don't want to use a wine glass you can cut a hole with a knife or somethin' similar to that, just as long as you have a hole about that size in the middle!
Step Two:
BUTTER TIME! Ok, I LOVE butter, therefore I use it a lot, so be warned. Spread butter over both sides of the slice of toast as well as the little circular bread piece.
Step Three:
Ok, fun time! Turn on your stove thingy to about medium heat. With my stove it's out of nine and I used it on a six, so however your stove works...yeah, figure it out. xd Anyhoo, place some more butter in the fryin' pan as it heats up and continue in this fashion with little pieces of butter until the butter begins to make a sizzlin' noise, then you know it's nice and hot!
Step Four:
Place the piece of bread into the pan and wait for the one side to turn a beautiful golden colour (this may mean you have to flip it every once and a while to see if it's golden yet or not). Once it is golden on one side, flip if over and cook it until it's golden on the other side.
Step Five:
Put another little piece of butter in the middle of the hole in the bread. It should sizzle, showin' that the temperature is still good. Before all the butter melts away, crack the egg into the hole. Then add salt to the top of the egg.
Step Six:
Wait a little while as the bottom side of the egg gets cooked. You should be able to see the whites of the egg turnin' whiter through the hole, and when you think it's cooked long enough, use the flipper and flip it over. Then add salt to this side of the egg and wait about the same time as you did on the first side. Special tip: Poke the egg middle with your flipper to test if it's ready or not. If you want the yolk to still be yolky, the middle should me tender but not completely hard. If you want your yolk to be solid, wait until the middle is solid to touch. You might need to flip the toast a few times so one side doesn't get over cooked.
Step Seven:
Almost done! Now the hardest part is over! Take the toast and egg thingy off the fryin' pan and unto your plate. Remember that little circle of bread you buttered? Still got it? Good! Now place that little piece of bread on the fryin' pan. You can probably turn the stove off now and use the heat already absorbed into the pan to finish cookin' the piece of bread. Add salt if you want, but it's still tasty unsalted. Once one side is golden, flip it over until the other side matches the first side! Then remove the little piece of bread and place it in the middle of the bread where it used to be before you put an egg it it.
And you're DONE! Now enjoy your delicious Egg in the Basket!
Eatin' Tips: I don't really like just plain egg, so I prefer to cut my egg middle open and spread the yolk and egg around the bread and then eat it. As for the little piece of bread, you can use it to wipe up the extra little crumbs after you've finished the main part, or you can just shove it in your mouth in the beginnin' or eat it with the main part. It's all up to you!
ENJOY!
