December Edition 1864

Harper’s Weekly

This month’s addition will cover issues that have been discussed before, like Lincoln’s re-election. Rumors are arisen from the locals that, this terrible, bloody, humiliating war will finally end by 1865. I’m Harper’s Weekly’s director and gladly present the last edition of this year, “Long lives the Union”!

January
Confederate forces fail to capture the city of Athens, in Alabama. They were under Colonel Moses W.Hannon, who raided the city with 600 men. The Union only had 100 troops but repeatedly rebuffed the enemies’ attacks, “Amazing the south is retreating, after only two hours of combat!” This boosted moral among our soldiers for we also won the battle of Fair Gardens, Tennessee. In total we lost about 370 men in January including the battles of Danbridge.
May
General Ulysses S. Grant is promoted to commander Of the Union Armies, and begins the Wilderness Campaign. It was said to have been a very long campaign for Confederate forces were willing desert General Lee, which resulted in his army destruction. Again Grant pursued Lee to Spotsylvania Court House where both armies suffered greatly for it lasted half the summer. Grant quoted “I would gladly fight all summer if I have to”. This was talked about in the North and south for many thought this could have been the big battle that could have ended the war. Sadly enough we all wish this war to end.

The Rumors

Since the beginning of 1864 rumors spread throughout the senate that President Lincoln would be elected, though many weren’t too happy. In the end he only won the 1864 election because of military success and issued that if any southerner would join the north, they would be pardon.

Battle of the Year

The greatest battle of 1864 took place in Richmond Virginia. This was unheard of for General Grant had brought his entire army to the confidante’s capitol but with no success. The confederates kept getting reinforcements until their railroad was burned, which the supply system. For six months to now the Union is digging trenches, and waiting for Lee to finally retreat the city for further pursuit. “Let’s hope our boys win this one and finally end this wretched war” stated our governor of New York.
