Harrold kept his eyes on the clock at the front of the classroom. He anticipated the end of the day. Not like being home would do much to help his mood. He had a nice mountain of homework waiting for him once he got there.
“And who knows the answer? Harrold?”
“X equals 64.” Harrold answered, not taking his eyes off the clock.
“Very good.” The teacher replied just as the bell rang. “Don’t forget your homework on page 332 of your textbooks…” Great. More homework.
Harrold was already out of his seat, heading toward the door. He raced to his locker, trying to avoid having to stop and chat with anyone. Once he was out of the school, he welcomed the cool rain on his burning face. He was instantly drenched.
While walking to his car, he started searching his pockets for his car keys when he heard a voice at his side. “You should have brought a jacket. You’re going to catch a cold you know.” Harrold turned to see the same girl from before, in the cafeteria, standing beside him.
“I think it’s a little too late for that.” Harrold replied with a smile.
“Here.” She welcomed Harrold under her umbrella. (ella ella a a a!) “Where are you parked?”
“It’s the silver car in the third space.”
“Great. Mine’s the black in the second.” She smiled up at him as they started walking towards their cars.
“You’re Harrold, right?” The girl asked.
“Yeah, how’d you know?”
“You’re quite popular, Harrold.” Harrold just laughed.
“I’m Carina.”
“Nice to meet you, Carina.” Harrold smiled at her.
“I can see why you’re so popular. You have a wonderful smile and it’s gorgeous the way your hair hangs in your eyes. Especially when it’s dripping wet.” Carina explained, her eyes shining, a big grin on her face. Harrold had no idea how to respond.
“I’ll see you later, Harrold.” Carina said with her harmonious voice as she approached her own car. Before she got in she shouted over her shoulder, “Oh, and happy 17th birthday!”
“How did you know –?” Carina shut her car door, cutting him off. Harrold suddenly realized he was standing in the rain like an idiot and rushed to his warm, dry car. The entire ride home his thoughts were with Carina.
Harrold unlocked the front door to his house and walked in, warmth and dryness instantly surrounding him. The house was deadly silent. Both of Harrold’s parents had to work late, so Harrold barely saw them. He didn’t mind much. He had gotten pretty used to it since both of his parents were big time office people. He was oblivious to the water he was dripping all over the place as he went straight to the kitchen to get a snack since he hadn’t eaten much lunch.
When he reached the refrigerator, he saw the calendar held up by a magnet on the freezer door. April 12th. Harrold thought that it didn’t really feel like he was any older. Birthdays were never all that big in his family since he was an only child, and his parents always had to work. Harrold was very used to spending his birthdays alone, eating a cupcake or a cookie as a substitute for a birthday cake. Why should this birthday be any different?
wish harrold a happy birthday, he needs it...
