Unnamed Female Character
If you've seen at least one FFXIII trailer, then you'll know who she is. Firstly, she could be the lead character of FFXIII. Secondly, she wields a weapon that can interchange between a gun and a sword. She seems to be extremely agile and posessess great attacking strength.
Have you seen the E3 trailer? That's a yes, then. It shows a scene where an unamed woman defeats a bunch of Star Wars-like soldiers on a speeding train. No idea where it's set, or what the storyline concearns, alough the woman shown will most probably be the main character.
More about the mysterious woman, then. She wields a gunblade (a weapon that can switch into a gun from a blade back and forth), and she pretty much completely slays all the soliders struggling to even get a scratch on her in the train scene. In the second E3 teaser, we see a dragon-like creature fly up to her. She gets out her sword, ready for a scrap, but the trailer ends there.
There is little known about the game so far. Square-Enix is probably going to keep all the major details, such as (official) release date and storyline, under wraps for now.
Final Fantasy FFXIII Battle System
First Impressions
Lots going on, so hard to analyze. However, battles are, like in FFXII, real time. So you can freely move your character around the map without having to worry about a turn based structure, so this will add much more skill as well as stats.
It looks fairly similar to the other Final Fantasy games, with all the usual flare, but this time it looks much faster - and it's much more action oriented then the old style of enemies simply just exchanging blows. And with the power and capabilities of the PS3, the battles should be the best yet.
Final Fantasy XIII Preview & Information
Final Fantasy XIII is not just a single game - it's part of the new "Fabula Nova Crystallis" (translation: The New Tale of the Crystal) trilogy with Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII appearing on the PS3, and the other game (oddly enough) appearing on mobile phones.
The three games are hardly related. They take place in the same universe, but the characters, stories and places do not have much in common between the three games.
Final Fantasy XIII
One of the well-known screenshots from Final Fantasy XIII. It shows the currently unnamed female character (probably the lead one) absolutely hammering the life out of some solders.
More about the two PS3 games, then. Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII both are currently being developed simultaneously, and will be released on separately (with the first game, Final Fantasy XIII, coming out next year). The turn-based battles are gone and instead they have been replaced by a fast-paced, exciting system that allows for a more skillful approach to the combat.
It's easy to tell that Final Fantasy XIII will be a classic title - the graphics are amazing, for one thing - the combat scenes shown in the trailer and the screenshots in this article are all in-game, real time graphics. Earlier, Square showed a trailer with outstanding FMV footage, but when the in-game graphics were shown, the visuals took a hit. Now, this problem is gone, and the game looks better then most of the PS3 titles out there.
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy Versus XIII is a very different game to Final Fantasy XIII. Very little is known about the game, except that it's known it will be a more action-based title. It also has online play (but not an MMORPG). The main concern with Final Fantasy Versus XIII is that it sounds like Dirge of Cerberus - which, let's face it, will probably not live up to the other Final Fantasy games. But we can hope.

Lightning
As ever, a Final Fantasy XIII rumour mill has emerged. Firstly, some people think that the woman in the teaser is called Lightning, due to the word "Lightning" shown near the stats bars during battle. However, it's doubtfull that Lightning is actually her name - it sounds like a name you'd give for a Yellow Hedgehog in Sonic for one thing. It's true that some characters were named after natural things - Cloud as one prime example, and another being Tidus (Tidus means water). However, cloud is a fitting name, and if Tidus was literally called "Water", then it would seem rather stupid. Which is the case for lightning really, so it's doubtfull the woman is called Lightning.
Xbox 360?
One thing I read on 1up.com was that there's a rumour going around that FFXIII could also be released on the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3. It could be possible, but there is again no official confirmation that it's going to be on Bill's console.
Release Date
Other then 1up's claim for a September 2007 release, there have been no claims made as for a release date. 1up's prediction still leaves us clueless though.
