“I can’t just leave my car here.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it you just need to go home and get some rest.”
Carina led Harrold to her car and helped him in. As she was going around to get into the driver’s seat, Harrold looked around. Everything was spotless.
“Are you one of those clean freaks?” Harrold asked as Carina got into her seat, throwing her bag into the back.
“No,” Carina said with a laugh. “I just got this car when I came here and I haven’t had it long enough to get it dirty.”
“Where did you live before you came here?”
“Do you want to have your window down; it might help cool you off.”
“Uh, yeah, sure.” Harrold replied, resting his head against the back of the cool leather seat.
Harrold loved Carina’s car. It drove so smoothly and quietly it felt as though they were gliding down the streets, although he did notice that she was driving a bit over the speed limit. She made very sharp turns and had to deal with the beeping of angry drivers but Harrold said nothing about it. In fact, it was a pretty silent drive. Harrold kept a hand on his aching forehead while his hair whipped wildly about his face in the wind. He realized that Carina knew the way to his house without him having to tell her the way. How much did Derrick tell her? How much did she want to know? How much did she know?!
When they came to a stop on the street in front of his home, Harrold didn’t move at all. Carina stared at him with one eyebrow raised.
“Do you need me to help you get inside?” Carina asked slowly.
“No, I can do it on my own, thanks.” Harrold slid out of the car and unsteadily walked up to the front door.
“Harrold watch out there’s a --!!” Carina was too late. Harrold kept walking and tripped over the step to his front porch. The next thing he knew, he was on the ground.
Carina had made it half way up the lawn by the time Harrold had made any effort to get himself up. He really wouldn’t mind laying there on the wet ground.
“I’m fine, I’m fine.” Harrold said as Carina approached his side.
“Are you sure you’re going to be ok? Didn’t you say before that nobody was home?”
“I’ll be fine. I don’t have any homework to do or anything so I can just relax.”
“Make sure you do, that’s the only way you’re going to get better.” Carina was wagging a finger at him the way a mother would when scolding a child. Harrold assured her that he would rest and made it safely inside. After he closed the door, he waited until he heard the sound of Carina’s car driving away to move.
He went to his room and grabbed his guitar. He returned to the living room and pulled one of the brightly colored picks from his pocket. He leaned back onto the couch and started playing his mother’s lullaby. The song put him to sleep.
This time, he dreamt he saw Carina in a big field. She was far away from him. She put something down on the ground, stepped back, and disappeared into thin air. Harrold started to run over to where she had been to see what she left behind. As he was running, the grass started to grow taller and taller. It was soon over Harrold’s head and he couldn’t find his way out. A fearsome growling sound made Harrold stop in his tracks.
