a courtesan
jade beads in her hair
her skin, stained with sepia
half-hidden beneath resplendant tatters
silks ruined by smoke
in the greased air
coiling from the ivory pipe
ingrained with dirt
and held in taloned hands.
her kohled stare is direct
haughty as an empress
in a beggar's shack
and draws men to her bed
like fluttering moths
to a red paper lantern.
