Well, you could say this is "Yet Another ::sighs:: Game Idea". Technically, I had this one a very long time before a bunch of my other ones. But this ties on a fantasy world I've actually written on, "Prophet Destiny" (duh.). Storywise, I'd consider this "The Hobbit" of my series where a bunch of fun things get introduced before the nitty and gritty is witnessed in later chronological stories ala "Lord of the Rings". I just felt this would be way more fun interactive, especially when this is mostly character-driven and would get really tedious detailing a bunch of possible battles in each place. That, and... it would be WAAAY better then some "Choose Your Own Adventure" book to determine some of the outcomes for yourself.
The concept in my head is an odd mix of "Tales Series" battle style, with the towns playing out free-roaming "Harvest Moon" style where you can do quite a few activities to gather items and such before moving on in your journal. And then there'd be a few date-sim like chat-portions, with some that could end up leading to some optional discussion scenes (Maybe I'll write these as "short stories" later on). Mostly, you'll be forced to choose between the two heroines vying for your affections in some activies, but then you might have your other party remembers making choices with NPCs as well. Heck, you'll even have a few chances of developing friendly relations between the two heroines (No, not for some lesbian action, geez...) should you choose to do so.
The plot? It's not SUPPOSED to be big, really, seeing as how this is supposed to be an introduction story like "The Hobbit", as I said earlier. It's just a group of country bumpkins are setting out on a coming-of-age journey to the urban lands. See? Nothing TOO special, but hopefully I'd be able to supply just enough plot twists to keep it interesting.
I liked how each character in the Tales Series had their own good chance at the spotlight. I'd like to do the same with this idea, even if the plot is very vague and minor. If you have no damn clue what the heck the Tales Series is, I apologize for the jargon that may follow. Please don't bring this to my attention stating "I don't know/Never played the Tales games, but yada yada yay..."; I'll get that. Just deal with it/ignore it and move on. Anyway, on with the characters.
Leif/Ruth – Swordsman
The “hero” of the story. He is a hardy, yet fun-loving young man who enjoys a mix of strenuous work and leisurely activity. He, along with his “senior” Regan work as the village woodcutters, and he also joins the girls in fishing. He’s also taken up a mostly self-taught sword style and has developed into a capable, disciplined fighter. He serves as a hearty big brother to the younger folk of his village, especially to two girls he cherishes greatly.
*He is inspired by Ray and Cliff of the Harvest Moon Games, though I notice a few similarities in personality with Joe as well.
*He is a mostly balanced fighter with a slight emphasis on power. He possesses the most sword techniques, but lacks “push-away” or “repel” abilities like the Tales Series’ “Beast” skill. His fighting style resembles that of Cless Alvein’s from Tales of Phantasia.
*Still not sure what his name will be.
Lillya- Magic Swordsman
A magical half-elf swordsman and heroine of the story. She is an lively, cheerful, and somewhat childish girl who was adopted into the village after being discovered at infancy. She seems to enjoy climbing trees, moving every which way, and doing active work that isn’t very strenuous. Surprisingly, she also enjoys kicking back once in a while to fish with Ruth. Also in her spare time, she manages some sparring time with Ruth to develop her fast and furious dual-sword style, and nearly rivals his combat ability. At times, she also plays around with her magic to gain competent control for support and attack spells. While appearing mostly optimistic on the outside, she deals with the inner dilemma of the unknown parents who possibly abandoned her, along with feeling slightly estranged for being the only one in her village who isn’t quite human. Then there is the dilemma concerning her developing feelings for Leif, and a possible love rivalry with Gracia, the “Older Sister” she also grew up with whom she admires and respects.
*She changed quite a bit from her original character of being a “pushy tomboy with a subtle good heart” kind of thing. Personally, I like this new version of her better. The hairstyle I drew her with (in comparison to this tekek) resembles Gwen from Harvest Moon:Magical Melody, so she’s a considerable design influence.
*She is a speed fighter that has a mix of speed-based sword techniques and limited attack spells. Her fighting style resembles that of Lloyd Irving form Tales of Symphonia, but with considerably less techniques and a range of spells close to Zelos’.
Gracia- Psychic Archer
A psychic archer and heroine of the story. She is a calm, motherly, yet protective young woman who was adopted in the village as a toddler under mysterious circumstances. She tends the main house and takes care of most of the chores, and doesn’t mind the work at all. She also enjoys fishing along with Ruth and Lillya, and may actually be the best among them. Since birth, she has possessed unique mental abilities that was once mistaken as magic, but was later discovered to be a form of esp. Because of this, she has hone most of this psychic power to heal wounds, resolve village disputes, and make household work easier. She also applies this focus obtained in her psychic training to archery and becomes a competent archer. Like Lillya, she also harbors an insecurity concerning the parents who left her, so she shares a strong sympathy to her plight. However, she holds a vague image of her parents in mind, looking quite distraught. Even more is the odd familiarity in feeling she has raising Lillya as a little sister like she had done it before. She also has developed feelings for Leif, however, this is very awkward when she also considers the feelings of the little sister she cares for so much.
*I practically had down Gracia’s development before any other character. No real design influence, but I do notice a few similarities between her and Lumina from Harvest Moon. Going with the similarity,. I decided to draw a younger version of Gracia that resembles “younger” Lumina from “A Wonderful Life”.
*She always had psychic powers from when I first thought her up. The only issue was her weapon… if she had any. I first considered she’d have no weapons, and possibly have a default psychic attack to push back her enemies, then I considered her having a cooking pan like a few of the “interesting” RPG girls in existence. But then I remembered Avalith giving me a complaint on one of my other game ideas… “there aren’t any archers”. This idea had the same issue, so I decided to apply it here instead on Gracia. So yep, I owe Avalith much thanks for the psychic girl’s choice of weapon here.
*Her psychic abilities work a little like magic, but with an almost immediate “casting time” depending on the power of her ability. I believe her fighting/support style would resemble that of Natalia from “Tales of the Abyss”, since I’ve heard that she too is also a support fighter with archery ability; however, Gracia’s psychic attacks are considerably more powerful than her arrows. She even has a “push-away” ability with a circular radius similar to the combo-cancelling “Overdrive?” from Tales of the Abyss. Despite her considerable offensive capabilities, she would be considered the designated support healer of the group. But I guess that would make her more useful than most “healer-types” in RPGS, wouldn’t it?
"Raven"- Young Swordsman A young man who has traveled from the city. He discovered while gazing at an open field with nostalgia in his eyes. He is a kind, earnest, yet soft-spoken young boy who carries around a foreign short sword along with him for self-defense. He happily introduces himself with the nickname “Raven”, referring to the raven-black hair on his head. He takes a quick liking to the party, and seems especially drawn to Gracia whom he starts to see as a precious big sister. Because of the “country bumpkins’” ever present curiosity of city life, he is more than happy to share a few tidbits of his life experiences to the group. In some regards, he seems a little hesitant to speak about his family, especially if it concerns possible siblings he may have.
*For those of you well familiar with “Prophet Destiny”, Raven might look very familiar to you… wink
*His fighting style is mix of using his foreign blade, the “kodachi”, along with some martial arts. Despite his single sword, he is actually the quickest fighter having the smallest body. He utilizes a few thrust-based techniques with some potent “Push-away” attacks similar to the Tales Series’ “Beast” in the form of palm thrusts, along with some counter-techniques that react to physical attacks.
*After two temporary 4th characters, Raven joins and remains with the party the longest.
Gerard- "Fighter
The most seasoned warrior and hunter of the village, and is widely regarded as a brother or father figure among the villagers. He trained both Ruth and Lillya in battle, with both considering him a mighty warrior. He joins Ruth in one final hunt before the party finally leaves the village.
Milla- “Witch”
A local witch who lives in a cottage of a nearby forest. She’s visited Ruth and Company’s village on a number of occasions, so is quite familiar with the group. She’s a cheerful, enthusiastic, yet mature and hospitable woman who loves dabbling in medicine and the mystic arts. People in the country regard her as a powerful witch, but this is mostly likely because magical abilities are rare in the rural lands. The party meets her in the middle of a nearby forest while she studies herbs. She then sends them on a few chores to gather some things while guiding them through a few key areas before leaving the party in a leisurely village to rest.
*She’s one of my last PC ideas for the story and Temporary PC #2. I’m not sure if I’ll end up using her should I decide to develop this story. I guess I’d consider her a nod to Cierra from Riviera.
*She’s your typical powerful magic user. Being one of the few mages in her homeland, her attack spells are up to snuff. Her most powerful spell will be either something Earth-based or Water-based. In comparison to the other mages in “Prophet Destiny”, I’d say her ability is near-Elite level. Her weapon is a very sturdy broom, but she can’t fly ( or maybe “won’t fly ) on it.
Hm... yes, Gracia doesn't really look much like a fitting archer in her modest clothing, does she? Well, she'll remain in her common villager clothing for the whole game, but I suppose as time passed, she could've picked out more travel-fitting clothing. Well, for the sake of Archer Fanservice, here's the lovely Gracia in her possible future attire:
Archer Gracia
There. Are you happy, Avalith?
