Alt rocker wins $3M suit vs. ex-manager
Nine Inch Nails' front man Trent Reznor was awarded nearly $3 million yesterday by a Manhattan jury that found his ex-manager cheated him.
Reznor's jury award could jump to $4 million once interest on the money is tacked on, said his lawyer Zia Modabber.
"He was almost silent at first. It's still sinking in," Modabber said of Reznor's reaction to the verdict.
The alternative rocker sued his ex-manager John Malm, contending he was duped into signing a contract that gave the manager 20% of his gross earnings rather than net earnings and let him collect the commission forever.
"I felt I had an accountant I couldn't trust," Reznor testified during the three-week Manhattan Federal Court civil trial. "It was not pleasant discovering you have a tenth as much as you've been told you have."
Modabber said the trial should be a wakeup call for musicians to "maintain some separateness and independence and resist the temptation to hand everything in your life over to one person with no outside scrutiny whatsoever."
