The War That Never Was

Chapter IX

The sun started to rise over the giant plateaus that formed the desert canyons. Jack found a comfortable spot on my lap while he slept. I wish I was as carefree as him. I watched the sun rise through the giant glass window of the bridge. The King walked in from the bridge into our room and found himself a seat and sat down across from me. He stared at me with a smile on his face. I started back at him like a rabid wolf.
"Has anyone ever told you how beautiful you look?" I cut him off.
    "Yes actually."
He smiled and laughed. "What will make you happy?"
"Freedom of my people." I snapped at him. He sat back in his seat and smiled.
"My name is Aurel." He spoke. "I'm not a true King so my power is limited. Only if I have a Queen I will be able to live happily."
I looked out the window uninterested.
"And in order to have your empire free is to be Queen."
    "I know that." I growled.
"So, Aurora. Will you marry me and be my Queen?"
My heart sank as I started to think of Kai. I wanted my people to be free. I sighed and nodded. "Yes." He smiled and took my hand and kissed it. My hand felt like it was burning from his kiss. He stood up and bowed at me and I grumbled.
"I will make the preparations." He walked off back to the bridge. I clenched my fist and slammed the leather seat as my eyes started to water.
"Dammit!" I growled at myself. I put my hands on my face trembling. What have I done? Jack lifted his head off my lap and moved my hands from my face.
"Don't worry Aurora." He smiled at me. I couldn't help but smile back and pat his head. The engines soon stopped and I stood up and helped Jack up onto his feet. Holding his hand we walked off and out of the airship.

I stepped onto the cement and looked around. The alleys and streets brought back painful memories. They reminded me of my brother's untimely death. Aurel walked off the ship and stood next to me. His guards stood behind us and we started to walk, the guards following close behind. Jack looked all around, he was home.
"Whoa! Look how cool the Palace is!" He pointed.
Blinking, I looked up from the stairs ahead of us. It truly was beautiful. We approached the large doors to the Palace. One of the Tuor guards looked at me with his mouth wide open. He looked like the soldier that toyed with me about a year ago. When we walked in, there was a large table with men sitting all around it, these men are the Ministry of Rozzaria.
"What do you want Aurel? You're not welcome here any longer!"
"I beg my pardon, but I found our new Queen."
      "W-well, she's not a Native to Rozzaria."
"Actually she is." He cleared his throat.
"Well, lets make the arrangements. The wedding shall be held tomorrow." And old man stood. He had a long white beard and wore a green priest hat. He motioned the rest of the men to follow into another room. I felt like I had no say in anything anymore. Aurel smiled and waved at me and disappeared into the room with the ministers. Jack tugged on my hand while I turned around hearing women giggle. I cringed feeling like a doll again ready to be tested with many gowns. One of the women dragged me in front of a large mirror. Another came over with a pile of white gowns. I tried all of them which none were of my taste, until one caught my attention, It was a long white down that was open in the front and went to my stomach, but didn't show my breasts. It was webbed in the opening with black leather. The back was open as well that went down to my lower back. A curtain of blue and white diamonds went down my back. Jack, who was across the room taking a bath giggled.
      "Aurora looks pretty!"
I felt my cheeks flush. "Oh shut it!"
He laughed. When I turned my head to look into the mirror, I saw Kai with a sad smile across his face, I gasped and turned around quickly, but he wasn't there. Was I going crazy?
      "Are you alright Your Highness?"
"Yea. I thought I saw someone." I spoke unsure of myself. One of the women undressed me and I put my clothes back on.
"Aren't you excited?" One of the girls asked.
      "Yes." I lied "I am."
The King walked in with a smiling face. "Ready to talk to your people?"
I nodded as we walked out the door.

Thousands of my people were in the stony bleachers placed on the sides of the large stairway leading up to the Palace. My heart pounded and we walked to a large pedestal.
"People of Rozzaria. There is a new age today. No longer will we have to grieve over the loss of the King and Queen. There is a new Queen. Queen Aurora of Rozzaria!" The crowd screamed and cheered with excitement. Though there was a dark cloud over my head while I stared at the people. There was something wrong. I was escorted back to my room. There was a large crystal protruding from the ceiling and a large white bed. Jack was already asleep in it. I laid down in the bed watching the crystal swirl in different colors. my eyes got heavier until I finally drifted to sleep.
"Aurora, run!" Kai shouted at me while holding my hand. We were running down a long corridor, but from who? I lost my footing and fell to the floor. He picked me back up quickly and we ran. We found a dead end in a dark room. No one could see us, until the lights snapped on. Kai held me close to him in a death grip. Tuor soldiers came into the open with clanking of their armor and guns. The ones in the front kneel on one leg and held up their guns and the ones in the back stood. Kai looked at me with his gorgeous blue eyes that reminded me of the ocean. He smiled at me and I smiled back at him. I closed my eyes then heard at least ten gun shots then a sharp pain in my chest. It felt like I was perpetually falling until I landed on my back hard on the ground. Looking over, I saw Kai had fallen face first. His arm was outstretched to me like he wanted to touch my cheek once more. He stared at me them moved his index and middle finger in a wave.
"I love you." He mouthed to me. My eyes started to water and I felt the tears roll down the side of my skull and onto the ground.
"Kai!!" I screamed and sat up. I was in my room again and Jack was still asleep. the moon shined onto the crystal and lit up the room reminding me of the sunny day that tomorrow awaits.
