Chapter 1- New Beginnings
"Now hunny, are you sure you want to do this?" My mother said as we got off the California highway, I sighed. She asked me this since she said it back in June, just before school started. I honestly hate moving in general. Mom and I have been jumping around place to place since I was 5. I don't really have a true home. I try to stay away from really close friendships since in about 3-5 months, we'll be moving again.
Of course, I can't tell mom that...or she'll be disappointed and all mopey about it so I can feel guilty. So..nowadays I just tell her what she wants to hear. "Sure mom! I can't wait to get to Alaska. I heard that it's quite beautiful." She smiled her great big goofy smile at me and went on driving. We've been on the road since last Wednesday. And let's just say I don't enjoy traveling with my mom. And after a week or two she starts to get on your nerves. Some people say that artists will be like that. All I can say is that is a load of bullshit. She's been like that before she found her artistic abilities she was working in an office for a couple of years and hated it. Until one day she took a shot at art school for a couple of days at a local convention centre and found her true passion.
My father always said she was like a child when they were younger and he was the one who ended up looking over her with his kind loving eyes. But about 6 years later the day of my 4th birthday, he dies in the early hours walking home from work when a drunk driver ran him over. It's a touchy memory and I don't like talking about it much. And 13 years later, I'm stuck in a car with mom listening to her babble on about some new art project while I watch the traffic and pay attention to the road. "...and then I'll be able to finish!" Mom beamed at me. I snapped back into reality and realized I was in my own thoughts and didn't hear what she said. I only smiled and looked back out my window.
I'm about to SNAP! If I hear ONE more Brittney Spears song on this damn radio station....it's bad enough mom has to sing along. You with never ever see my mother at a rock concert. She thinks it's Satanic and all this weird catholic s**t. Ever since dad died she got into religion and chose to be a catholic. And of course, I was dragged into it as usual. So while my old friends are out at a rock concert listening to a great band, I'm stuck at home listening to God knows what. After a few years, I rebelled and went into a bad goth phase. I'm not as bad now since mom eased up on me and now I have my unique style, which is still the same clothing, only spread out a little. "HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIMMEEEEE!!!" Mom yellled loudly witht the song while people beside us in the other lane looked at us as if we had three heads or something.
I slunk down into my seat so they wouldn't see me. "PLEASE, Mom! People are STARING!!" I yelled so she could hear me. "Oh come onnn, they can't hear m--" She cut her sentence short where she saw a guy next to us in a big black SUV stare back down at us. She waved politely and hit the gass once the light turned green.
At Last~ We have arrived in Alaska. Of course, we're in the moutains near a lush meadow and surrounded by only 3 other houses spread appart the Moving Trusk is already here since mom sent it a couple of days before we left. Anway, it's gunna take awhile just to unpack everything. But I chose the room with the big window looking out to the neighbor's house next to us. Jeez, it's mighty huge...I wonder how many people live there. I shook my head and went on unpacking wondering how things will go this time. Mom says that this will be our home for good. I really hope that true because, I may not like traveling but some of the places mom finds are awesome, and it's sad to go. But Alaska tops every home we have had. While I was deep in my thoughts, I noticed a pale face looking right back at me from the neighbor's next door to us from their big window. It started at me for a very long time and then walked away from the window as the sun broke through the clouds. I stood there in confusion. "I wonder what that was all about..." I shook my head and continued to unpack.
As I finished, mom yelled from the bottom of the stairs, "Riah! Get your butt down here! I got a surprise for you!" Mom called as I rushed down the stairs and jumped in front of mom. "Holy Jesus, Riah! What's up with you?!" she squaked at me as I walked by. I shrugged and asked, "So...what's the surprise?" Mom smiled her biggest smile yet and flapped her arms like a cheerleader on super-happy pills. “Now...where did I put it?” She whispered to herself as she scampered around. I rolled my eyes and plopped down into a chair. “Ahahahahhaaa! I found them! Open your hand, Riah.” I opened my hand and mom dropped a set of keys into my hand. “What...? What are these keys for?...” “Just go outside, dear and you’ll see!!!” Mom giggled, that made me feel a little uneasy. Last time she giggled like that it ended up being a new home in Montana. I don’t even want to go there. So..I stepped outside onto our new farmer’s porch and dropped my new set of keys.
There, stood before me, my new black Mustang topped with a lovely red satin bow. “What do you think, Riah? This is your car during the Fall, Summer, and Spring. You can use my old black Bronco that I brought with me, just for you to use since we bought that Hummer 3 for me last year or so.” mom smiled at my expression on my face. “ARE YOU SERIOUS?! They’re BOTH mine?!” I shouted loud enough for the whole neighborhood to hear me. “Yes...they’re both your’s!" Mom squealed with delight as I fell to the ground, fainting for the excitement.
