A sailor named Davy Jones once fell in love with a sea goddess named Calypso. She charged him with ferrying souls which died at sea to the other side. He kept to his charge for ten years, knowing he would see his love again. Calypso however, after those ten years, failed to show up because she was afraid of acting predictably, as was her capricious nature. Enraged and heart-broken, Jones taught the Brethren Court how to imprison her into her human bonds and ripped out his own heart.
He placed his heart in the Dead Man's Chest. The chest was sealed and placed within a larger wooden chest along with numerous love letters to Calypso. This was then buried on island and Jones walked off, keeping the key to the Chest with him at all times. Jones' then abandoned his post and became immortal and mutated - and so with his ship and whom soever served on his ship.
Now every day is a sad and rainy one for Davy.
