[Wow, the last time I made a journal entry was last year. Dang. I just never took the initiative to actually type out an entry. But I am now, so yay!]
Twilight. New Moon. Eclipse. Three books in a series by Stephenie Meyers. With a fourth coming out, Breaking Dawn. When I first read Twilight, I was blown away. Vampires filled my thoughts (and read my thoughts). I bought New Moon soon after and werewolves were howling in my ears.
I wanted to read Eclipse so bad, but I had used up my Barnes & Nobles gift cards from my last birthday. I had to live without it. But I finally managed to get my hands on it when my school library bought it and I was the first to borrow it. I read it, and it sent me off on another spin.
But lately, it seems everyone (everyone being the female side of the population) has somehow read these books and adored them. For some reason, my friends all seemed to get hooked on it at around the same time. And other girls in my grade. I just kept seeing those books popping up everywhere. In the arms of girls everywhere. Crazy.
But really, compared to prestigious works of literature, Twilight sucks. The story line is so cliche, so predictable. And the characters, ugh! Honestly, how can the new girl who moved to the small town be wanted by so many boys on the first day? I don't think Bella was wearing a tube top and a mini skirt.
Edward. Oh, Edward. Beautiful, intelligent, perfect Edward. Sickening. There is no boy who has lived, is living, or ever will live to be Edward. Perfection is unattainable. And to make Edward into the epitome of perfection is ridiculous. It's unrealistic as well, that Bella would be able to deal with him. I personally would shoot myself if I were in her situation. For such perfection to flaunt itself in your face... Unbearable.
All in all, the Twilight series isn't that great. Just the way Stephenie Meyers describes the happenings, her particular style of writing, that's what makes it so appealing. And the fact that she added in an impossibly perfect dream boy.
And Twilight's influence is everywhere. Just go to the Barton Town Role Playing Forum. Vampires freaking everywhere. It's so hard to find a role play with a unique plot, rather than the whole vampires/werewolves/lycans/angels/demons crap.
The Twilight series is wonderfully written, but the story line and characters are unoriginal. So just get over it.
