“I won’t deny it: out of all of us in the class, you’re without a doubt the boldest of the bunch. You rarely back down on a challenge, you never give up no matter what you’re facing, and you’ll face anything that stands in your way. This much, I know all of us respect you for aside from your natural magical talents.”
“If that’s true, why am I not recognized as one of the top students in the class? Am I not an elite among the elites by your word?”
“Well, that’s the thing: You have an impressive effort, but... I’m sorry to say this… you aren’t focusing your efforts in the right areas. You aren’t keeping up with the reading, and you barely practice the basics at all. Of course, your magical training’s going to suffer because of this.”
“But Milady Rose! All of that stuff is just so boring… and unnecessary! I would think that as members of the Elite Class, we wouldn’t have to waste our time with all this “Basics” tripe and just go for the cream of the magical crop! Shouldn’t being an Elite Class Mage mean we can handle more advanced offensive magic without that much trouble? ”
“…Sadly, no. It’s much more than that, Marco. A qualified Elite Class Mage should show just as much scholarly commitment as he does magical prowess. An aspiring Mage Knight should be even more aware of how important a balance it is.”
“I know, I know. But I still say the Academy’s being too patient with us. I mean, how are they going to expect us to take it seriously if they can’t do the same for us? I really would’ve thought they’d have us dueling by now, but we have to wait another year before actively practicing defense! Something’s wrong here…”
“It’s exactly because we’re that capable that we need to be patient. We can’t just throw spells at each other and assume we have proper control because we’re at a “higher level” than everyone else our age. Okay, now this just sounds like you’re making more excuses not to study. Marco, do you honestly think that I’m easing my way through class because I hold the top position right now?”
“N…n-no, Milady.”
“Even though I have the natural gifts of a High Elf, I can’t let it go to my head, even more so if I want to know how well I can do. I’m working hard to earn my rank, not just for myself, but for everybody else’s sake. We’re all good friends here, and I want to see us all grow, especially you, Marco. I see so much you could be capable of. If you were just more committed to the studies, you yourself would recognize it, too.”
“But I don’t need some lousy books to raise my confidence!”
“That’s not what I meant!”
“…sorry, Lady Rose. It’s just… sometimes, I find all the reading a bit overwhelming… and then I can’t bring myself to go through it.”
“I see… well, Marco, if you had told me this sooner, I could’ve offered my personal help, but the new semester is starting and we have a new classmate coming in. Unfortunately, because of this, Professor Hunt asked me to bring him up to speed, so I’ll be too busy for any outside tutoring for awhile.”
“Oh… that’s too bad then. A new classmate, huh?”
“Yes indeed. I was told he passed the entrance exam with flying colors as well. He certainly sounds like an interesting guy. He might give you more competition, too.”
“What, some novice out of nowhere that we know almost nothing abo---wait, THAT entrance exam? With the cave?”
“Yes, that one. Interesting, really… I know it was an arena meant to asses incoming Elite candidates coming into the middle of the school year, but I heard it would even challenge those who got in by traditional means. He must really know his stuff…”
“Yeah, yeah. But you know what? It’s just a labyrinth crammed in a cave, right? I bet I could just power my way through the whole thing like he probably did. Ha! He’s probably not so hot in the head if he still needs remedial lessons from the classes’ top student!”
“Ah…maybe… but, we’ll never know until we meet him, you know.”
“Exactly!”
“And speaking of which, we’ll be meeting him in class today!”
“Right! Wait, what?”
“In any case, I’m glad we were able to have this talk, Marco. Let’s give the new classmate a proper greeting, and remember what I told you about studying. It could really help you out.”
“Yes, Milady.”
“Alright then. I’ll see you later in Class, Marco!”
“Good Day for now, Lady Rose.”
And so went my talk with Lady Rose Twiline, our very pride and joy, the head of the honorable Year Three, Elite Class of the distinguished Cirian Academy.
Frankly, I still do not get why it is we have to worry about basic magics when the guys over in the Average ranks are still fussing over it with practically the same experience as us. As among the best of the school, perhaps even the Magic Guild itself, shouldn’t it be a more immediate responsibility to learn how to fend off conniving scoundrels than sitting in and reading books about extra nonsense?
As the heir of a well-respected legacy of honorable Mage Knights, I, Marco Volphield, would think the Academy would better understand where our education should be focused on, but I guess they’d rather try our patience a little while longer before we can finally truly be recognized as the Elites we were named.
Fine, then. I’ll go along with the system for now. But I doubt all this extra book-reading will do me much good. Honestly, once you’re familiar with a spell’s enchantment, what else do you need to know?
But, if she insists, there must be something to these excess scholastics if Lady Rose insists I do this. It would be a sheer insult if I don’t take the suggestions of an honorable lady’s into serious consideration. Perhaps there’s something all this studying that only she understands.
For now, I have class to attend. I can’t to share news of this new classmate with my good friends. Of course, I’m still not convinced of the so-called “impressive” merit of this novice. Whatever may come of our meeting, a rookie is still a rookie, and I’ll be sure to lead our new classmate towards the right path once I meet him…
