Chapter 5
“Shiiiiishouuuuu! You’re really heavy!”
“Sorry…”
“Are all humans this heavy to carry?”
“Afraid so.”
“Well, no more flying for you till you lose some weight!”
“Not a big slap in the face, this is scary! You need flying lessons!”
“Oh, suck up! I do this ALL the time!” Hachi growled
“What did the mutt say THIS time?”
“That you should suck up.”
“Bad dog.”
“Oh REAL mature!”
“Hachi, I don’t think that maturity has anything to do with this…”
“What THIS time…?”
The things I do for these two… Shishou asked me to help him stop the poachers in Ngorongoro. Whatever THAT is… apparently, he has an obsession with getting to the lions… I really don’t know why… well, he says that the ‘desert angel’ could save them, but if this continues, there will BE no desert angel!
“I’m going down!” I said and plunged for the ground. Shishou screamed and Hachi rolled her eyes. I landed clumsily, Shishou tumbling off. “Health check!” I smiled sweetly.
“Good!” Hachi smiled back.
“Ouch…bloody nose…you call THAT a landing?!?”
“In other words, good!” Hachi smiled brighter.
“Apply pressure to the nose, and don’t listen to the talking dog. Questions, concerns, or compliments?”
“Thanks, Kisa, um, could I file a complaint? It’s called, LANDING! Ok, question, how far from Ngorongoro?”
“Ummmm….far?” Shishou was exasperated.
“Ngorongoro, 135 miles due south, 11.2 miles east.”
“Big funny word, 135 south, 11 east?” Hachi sighed at my translation.
“What?”
“Follow Hachi!”
“That works …”
A sound in the underbrush startled me. A high-pitched shriek sent Hachi into Shishou’s arms. Normally, that would have cracked me up, but this demonic cackling was no laughing matter. More joined into the hunt shriek, I spread my wings over all of us and closed my eyes. I could protect Hachi and Shishou, but I would probably die under the deadly grip of the hyena’s jaws. There were four, circling beasts. 120 pounds of hatred landed squarely on my back, forcing my on to the two. I felt it searching for a place to bite, to dislodge me. I felt a sharp pain and heard a snap on my wings. I fell limp, the pain overcoming me and all was black.
I slowly came back to my senses. A searing pain drifted up and down my spine. I grimaced as I saw the long blood stain down my back and across my wings. I limped up to a standing position and yelped as the huge cuts reopened. Hachi gazed at me, happy of me being alive, but sad about my pain. I stumbled to where Shishou was sitting and kneeled next to him.
