Chapter 23: Ashley Bested
Let’s time skip about 3 weeks. Days had become terribly boring and monotonous. Summer was fast approaching and the days began to drag on and on, with seeming endlessness. Along the way there were many streams and ponds to drink from, making water no problem. Food was plentiful, especially with our good aim when it came to small game.
One day it was about 11:00 am when we entered an area with tall grass. The grass came to about my chest and as we walked through it I made wide sweeps with my katana to cut it down and make a path. Thirty feet ahead there was motion. We froze.
“What should we do?” Ashley asked.
I scratched my head to think. “I don’t know. We have no idea what it is.”
“Well then I’ll throw a rock! It’s better than ‘I don’t know’!” she replied mocking my voice. She found a stone that fit in the palm of her hand and tossed it. It landed with a dull thud and not a second or two later it was sent flying right back at us!
“What the-?” I whispered dodging it. Near my left foot, there was a much larger rock. It took both hands to lift and I planted myself firmly to throw it. “Come out now or I’m throwing this!” I grunted.
A voice replied, “I wish you would throw that!” The voice sounded female, but it could’ve been a small boy. I chose to think that it was a girl. Around our age, maybe younger.
“Look, just stand up and I won’t throw it!” I said frustrated. There was silence, then a rustling that seemed to be getting louder and closer until-
“There!!” shouted a girl who sprang up from the grass in front of me. Because I was leaned back to throw the rock, I was caught off balance and turned to almost hit Ashley with the rock. Ashley fell back with a scream and fell flat on her a** in a pile of grass I’d made as we walked. Once I caught my balance, the girl laughed at our ordeal.
Just as I was about to go off, I looked at her to see that she was truly stunning in her appearance. Her skin was a smooth and brown like perfectly melted chocolate with sparkling eyes to match. Her hair came to about shoulder length and was a silky texture that was black with a hint of brown, speckled with dust and grass. It was wavy like water flowing down a stream that when clean, glistened in the sun’s mighty rays. Her body was less than a foot from my own and was perfectly curved. Such beauty given to this one single girl, who struck me now one worded. “Good.”
“Dyron?” Ashley asked, seeing me frozen in place. She got up, dusting off her skirt and pushed me back, getting between me and the girl. “What the hell are you doing?!” she yelled.
“My job! Now leave or you’re in trouble!” the angry girl snapped. She cracked a smile and looked at me saying, “But you get off with a warning!”
I seemed to wake up from my daze and stop this before Ashley hurt her. “Ashley, calm down! We can’t have you hurting this defenseless young woman for my sake! It’s not right!” I said coming between them once more.
“Defenseless? Please!” the mysterious girl scoffed. She raised her hand past my head and it grew hot and then set ablaze on its own!
“Oh I like this one Dyron!” Ashley grinned doing the same, only using her ice ring and glittered in the sun. “Count of three?”
“Three!” the girl said calmly and closed her fist, letting loose a flame and Ashley retaliated letting a beam of ice fly. I ducked to avoid injury and quickly rolled out of the way, only to watch.
More shots were fired and they then engaged in the clichéd clash for superior energy. This is also known as the beam struggle. Though the fire was just more of a two-handed flamethrower but you get my point. “So you’re Ashley? They call me Star!” she revealed with a final push, sending an overwhelming wave fire Ashley’s way.
Ashley used both ice rings to create a wall of ice which upon contact with the fire, turned to steam and water, the water soaking the ground, and splashing the both of them. They charged each other fists aglow, only to catch each other in another stalemate. This clash of energy threw them both back a considerable distance. Ashley felt the wet earth beneath her and would use it to her advantage.
“I win!” she stated slamming a lightning ring into the grass sending a surge right towards Star!
Star simply grinned and let out a giggle as the lightning fizzled out before her. There was no water to fuel it, but why? Star had absorbed and used it to make a pillar of ice about ten feet high. Star stood tall upon it with a confident smile. Without much warning at all, she jumped and descended towards Ashley with blinding speed giving her a blow to the stomach with what looked like fire was infused.
Ashley fell and lay still. Star melted the pillar and smiled at me as if she’d done nothing wrong. “I win!”
