Chapter 2 June 4th 2001
There was a sudden scream, one I am pretty much use to by now. Though it is still ear piercing, I knew exactly what it was. It was Tina screaming because she wasn’t getting everything her way, again. So I went down stairs to see her standing in the living room, with her mouth wide open screaming at the top of her lunges. I quickly walked over to her. “What are you screaming for now?” I asked impatiently. “I simply wanted a biscuit but Ms. Drimply won’t let me have one before we have breakfast.” Tina replied with sharp words. I shook my head at her and sighed. “Why must you cause such a big ruckus over a biscuit? She said you can have one later” I said trying to calm her down. “But I want one now!” she shouted at me. So, I covered her mouth and looked at her with a straight and calm face. “Go and do something to pass the time until it is time for breakfast, alright?” I said smiling at her, trying to keep the peace between us. She pushed past me and left to her room. I took a deep breath. Sometimes there’s just no satisfying her. It’s hard to keep her calm when all she wants is more, and more. I turned swiftly to face the door to the hallway, but there was Danny standing in the doorway. He just smiled and clapped. I looked at him wondering what he wanted. “Good job on taming the beast.” He laughed out. “She is not tamed and can’t ever be tamed. She’s like the devils daughter. Ms. Timberlines daughter more like.” I chuckled in return. He just laughed and moved aside so I could exit the living room. As I walked out he caught he and pulled me down the hall to the stairs. We went to where all the boys bedrooms where, so I stopped him. “Where are you taking me? You can’t just drag me around, where ever you please.” “Oh, just trust me for once it won’t kill you. Can’t you trust me?” He said smirking at me. “I guess I can, but you don’t have to drag me wherever we are going.” I argued. He just nodded, and kept following my down the hall. He led my into Marc and Justin’s room. I looked around to find why he wanted me to go into there room. My eyes widened as Marc pulled off the lid to a shoebox. The box had a large warty toad inside. I opened my mouth to scream, but Danny quickly covered my mouth so I wouldn’t. I moved his hand away and looked and the monstrous toad that Marc held proudly. “Where did you get that? Why did you bring it in here? Does anyone else know?” I asked in great astonishment. “In the yard, of course, I brought it in, because I thought it looked too hot outside. Only You, Danny and I know about it. Please don’t say anything to anyone.” He said with sad eyes. I just smiled at him. “I won’t say a word, as long as you take it back outside before breakfast.” I promised him. He smiled and put the toad back into the shoebox, then gave me a hug. “Thank you Ashley, I knew I could trust you!” he said then looked at Danny. “Told you she wouldn’t tell!” then he went back to his new toad friend, and I walked past Danny. I whispered into his ear. “Can’t you trust me?” Then went to my room to brush my tangled hair. When I got into Melissa’s and my room, Melissa was picking out what she was going to wear for the day. I just shrugged, then went to the mirror with my brush and started to straighten my hair. My hair is always a bit tangled. I wish I had silky hair like Melissa’s. I think it would be a lot easier to take care of, and I wouldn’t have to brush my hair so often. I kept brushing my hair, daydreaming about perfectly straight hair. While brushing my hair Melissa kept asking me which outfit she should wear, and how should she put her hair up, and a lot of other questions like that. Whenever I said my answer she would go with the opposite option. That’s one thing about her that drives my crazy. Whenever she asked for my advice she won’t go with what I say. She just doesn’t something else, and completely ignores what I said. I put my brush down and looked in the mirror. I just stared at my now straight hair. My hair is black, and I have blue eyes, nothing really impressive, though people seem to love my eyes. I don’t really know why people like blue eyes, I mean they are like any other color. During the summer my eyes tend to be a lot brighter, in the winter they are a pail blue, the spring makes my eyes a bit green around my pupil, and in the fall my eyes have hazel mixed in with the blue. I think my eyes are really weird, how they change colour in the different seasons. Melissa had already left to go eat breakfast, and I was just on my way when I bumped into Dianna, also on her way, so it seemed. I chatted with her on the way to the dining room about girl stuff. For breakfast we had oatmeal and raisins. Talk about disgusting, no one in the orphanage likes oatmeal, I think that’s why Ms. Timberline makes us eat it. After breakfast, I decided to check up on Ivory to see how she was doing. I quietly crept up the stairs and into her room. I was surprised that her door was open for once. I peered around the room, to see her in her usual corner of the room. I smiled at her and stepped more into the room. She hugged her beloved teddy bear tighter, so I stopped. “Hi Ivory, how are you?” I asked her quietly. She just looked up at me with her usual, sad and tortured looking eyes. I picked up her empty bowl of oatmeal and started walking out the room when I heard her say something. “Did you say something?” I asked politely. She replied “Thank you.” I just nodded at her, and left with the bowl in my hands. I put her bowl into the sink with the others, for Ms. Drimply to wash later on. I saw Tina skip into the kitchen with a happy smile. She took a biscuit then left. I just kind of chuckled to myself, remembering what had happened. As I walked out of the kitchen, I bumped into Ms. Timberline. I just stood there looking at her with wide eyes, like I was going to be in trouble. “What are you looking at? Don’t you know it’s not polite to stare?” she said to me in a rude tone. I hate it when she talks to me like that. “I’m sorry miss” I said with a somewhat sarcastic tone. Then I stepped out of the way. She passed me, looking like she was ready to rip someone’s head off. So I quickly went to my room to see if Melissa was there, or any of the other girls. When I walked in, there weren’t any girls, but there was a boy. Justin looking around the room, like he’d lost something. “What are you looking for?” I asked curiously. He looked at me with teary eyes. “I lost my lucky base-ball cap! Will you help me find it? Please, oh please Ashley?” “Oh yes of course Justin!” I replied. After hours of searching and having to break for lunch and supper, we finally found his cap outside in the oak tree. I sighed with relief. “Finally!” “Thank you, thank you, thank you Ashley!” Justin exclaimed and hugged me tight. It was a bit weird since he’s kind of short. I didn’t mind though, I just patted his head, with his just found cap on, and he ran off. I yawned, I was getting really tired from searching the whole house that day for Justin’s cap, so I went off to bed.
