Chapter 29: Half Way There!
About another week had passed. The map indicated that fifteen miles from where we are now would be the official 2/3 or ½ mark. It was late morning and we trotted through the prairies, eating a light breakfast as we did so.
“We’ve only got a short way to go!” Star said in a high voice. It was really cute and I laughed, telling her I loved it when she did that. She blushed and thanked me then suddenly, took off into a full gallop. Ashley and I followed happily and we reached the half way mark early that evening.
With our second flag collected, the three of us waited on Tom and/or Sara. Eventually, both arrived quite surprised to see we had a third person with us. “And who, may I ask, is this?” Tom asked sternly.
“I’m Star. I’m a Neravee who these two found lost here in the plains!” she answered. This girl didn’t miss a beat did she?
Tom gave suspicious look and then Sara asked, “So I assume you’re a Demox as well? You are clearly dressed as one!”
Star nodded reached in her bag and showed the adults a retractable metal rod about a foot long and half an inch in diameter fully extended. It was engraved with the marks of Mage jewelry along its sides. “See? I have a channeling rod and everything! I know it’s a bit old-fashioned, but it’s easy and shows some class, right?” she said. They both agreed and there were no more questions asked. We could hear the sound of hooves growing louder. They couldn’t be from our horses; they were next to us.
We turned to see Team Lamis arrive in an ox-driven wagon. “Good evening everyone!” Melissa shouted getting out of the wagon. She casually, walked up and claimed their flag and current second place.
I raised my hand half way and let it drop lazily to my side saying, “Hi Melissa,” in an unenergetic tone. She joined the rest of us, waiting on Tyler as he pulled the wagon next to our horses.
“No Kratias?” Tyler asked rhetorically. There was a grin on his face and it pissed me off thoroughly.
“Tyler I’m tired of your mouth!” I snapped stepping forward. Ashley and Star both grabbed a sleeve and pulled me back but lost their grips as I pulled harder than they could bear. I realized that fighting him outside an official spar would count as unfair inference with another team. It was in my best to stop, so I did.
Tom cleared his throat and I turned to him. “Sorry. I was out of line,” I apologized, eyes cast downward. Even this hotshot knew when to chill out.
“Very well. We shall wait until Team Kratias arrives to announce the half-way mark spar! As is standard, there will be one full week dedicated to your resting and preparing for the second half!” Tom announced. It would certainly be a great break! Especially with Star around!
Following the announcement, we were taken farther down the path to the resort. This resort’s only purpose is to be the half-way mark. It was small compared to most on Moracius, but that made it like an oasis in the desert! Well worth the pain and suffering! There was a spa, the best training facilities almost anywhere, and so much more!
Late that night, or rather, very early the next morning, 3 a.m. maybe, Kratias had finally arrived. They came in on foot just as we left them! I guess they didn’t strike lucky like everyone else. After I heard the news, I hopped out of bed, Ashley at my heels. We rushed as fast as we could up the path. “Guys!” I shouted hugging them both. Curstan laughed and hugged me back.
As we walked back we ended up finding out that we both had been attacked by the same tribe of Humanoids! Kratias had a horse drawn carriage and it was stolen, used to make weapons, and then used on us, Neravien. Of course we told them that we defeated the demons and they were relieved and thrilled to hear it.
“Well at least you’re here and in good shape!” I said.
“Yeah, thank God!” Nathan said agreed. We finally made it back to the hotel and found that everyone was now up and about to see what was up. Sara had appeared in a nightgown, still very groggy and out of it.
"Oh! Team Kratias! Welcome to the half way mark resort. Now your room is next to Neravien’s. Get some well deserved rest and Tom and I will announce our winners of the spar tomorrow afternoon,” she said with a yawn or two in her speaking. She then returned to her room and left us for the night.
