Part 4 Back to school!
With the sun’s heat cooling down, and the leaves turning from green to a crisp crimson, the summer had melted away into autumn. JB and Josh had had a few chances to meet up with Bella again but the young girl, instead of feeling more at ease with the boys, looked like she was becoming more and more nervous. Josh tried often to convince her to relax or tell him what was bothering her but Bella refused and had sometimes looked to JB for some sort of answer. Josh thought this was more then strange but figured that asking JB was fruitless. No matter how much he’d harass his friend, Josh knew that JB would only tell him what was going on when it suited him.
Finally September had arrived and marked the beginning of the boy’s last year as seniors. Although Josh was happy to be back, he still felt downhearted over the fact that he’d probably be seeing his childhood friend less and less as he prepared for his graduation in the summer. Still, school life was beckoning and he knew… he had a lot of work waiting for him.
“So, are you going to keep doing this, this year? I mean… I do have enough in my start up fund,” “JB I told you I’d see this through. Besides, it’s a good pastime… and you know I like girls so…” “Hehe, it’s your call. But you know, once we start, it will be difficult to stop it Josh. And the last thing I want to do is give refunds,” “What reason would I possibly have to stop now?”
JB smiled as they made their way to Barton High, Barton Town’s only private high school. The main building itself had an old castle-like style. Iron gates decorated the entrance and lead to a pathway, piecing through grassy turf and leading to the various structures that composed Barton High.
“Ahhh, its Josh and JB!” cried a voice in the distance.
Josh turned his head towards the sound and saw a sophomore cooing excitedly as they walked on. Laughing lightly, he turned his head towards her and waved nonchalantly. The girl went bright red then ran off to giggle with her friends on the grassy hills.
“Heh, looks like you haven’t lost it!” smirked JB. “And why would I? Besides, what did you call that last year?” “Ah yes, charity. Well, I suppose it’s a good gift to the girls that didn’t sign up,” “I was thinking, maybe it would be better to shorten the list to until March this time. This way I’ll have to time to start sending University applications,” “Durem U?” “Well, they have the best arts and business programs around. I figured you’d have already checked that out,” “I have but… and there’s no other motivation for heading to Durem?”
Josh grimaced and continued his walk.
Both boys headed for the principal’s office to get the list of freshman for the first day of orientation. They had volunteered to do this since JB and Josh knew that this would mean extra credits for University and a day off from actual school and classes. After receiving their lists they headed out towards the back to greet the new young faces of Barton High.
“Oh hey, there’s a sophomore in here! A transfer?” “Let me see!” said JB as he ripped the paper out of Josh’s hands. “Hey! Relax! You could have just asked me for it!” “Oh hey, you’re right! Isn’t that something? Well, time to get to it!”
Josh cocked an eyebrow and began to walk towards the crowds of kids all talking together excitedly.
“Say, did you hear?” asked a girl “No, what?” replied another. “They said that two of the most popular boys will be doing our orientation!” “No way! Really? That’s so weird! I thought popular kids didn’t do this kind of stuff!” “Umm… do you guys know who-“
“Hello everyone!” boomed JB’s voice. “My name’s JB, that Josh Benton for short! Me and Josh Watanabe over here, will be leading your orientation! How, everyone who’s last names start with A to the letter M will be in my group. Huddle up next to me and we’ll get going. Everyone from N to Z follow my pal over here!”
Josh smiled and waved. As the crowds dispersed JB handed Josh back his roster and gave him a thumbs up. He pulled off to the side and led his group off. Josh looked about him and noticed a face in the crowd: dark hair and grey eyes pierced his field of vision. Josh shook it off. There was no way that what he saw was true.
After about 30 minutes of walking and explaining the surroundings he told the group to stop and take a break in the cafeteria. The moment Josh sat down to rest 4 girls grouped around him and started talking eagerly, each voice trying to overtake the other.
“Ladies, ladies, please, one at a time,” “Um – uh, is it true? I mean, is it true that you’ll go out with anyone?”
Josh smiled.
“I don’t think “anyone” is the right word to use. I think the more appropriate word is… everyone. The way people deny and discard people just because they’re not to their liking is absurd! I mean, there is beauty in everyone and I refuse to veil my eyes to such loveliness because I’m selective…” Josh then put his hand on the girl’s cheek, “If I don’t spend time with every girl, how do I not know whether I have missed my one true love? What if the forces that fling us through circumstance, happen to deny me this one single serendipitous moment that might bind me and my loved one forever… just because I was not initially interested?”
“Oh yes! I get it now!” cooed another girl. “So, by going out with lots of girls, you’re searching for your soul mate!”
Josh’s hand stretched out to grab a strand of hair.
“You seem to understand me well… I wonder, maybe you’re the one I’m looking for,” “Kyaaa!!” squealed a young freshman. “Josh, Josh!” they replied and restarted the same inaudible noise they began with.
Josh’s eyes danced happily at the girls as they spoke and argued but then his eyes lifted and saw that same head of hair moving outside with a few more girls. He excused himself from the crowd and followed that silhouette outside.
