Beginnings in Art
While I was looking for some old art pieces I did a few years back...I found this little book I made for a class assignment....reading over it...It was about my beginnings in art.
Before I lose it again....I want to copy the text somewhere. Read and laugh if you want ((Note: I replaced my real name with "Nadistu" =p ))

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quote:
"You have the Soul of an artist"
Nadistu was first sent to a small art school one summer while he was in Elementary School. His mother thought he had a talent with colors and sent him there to learn how to draw. The school started teaching from the very basics from how to draw circles to drawing still life.

"I don't remember much from the days I was in that summer art class, besides it being hot and that I had tried to draw our fish tank full of fish for a still life homework assignment. But the thing I remember the most from that class was what the teacher said to me when we were drawing still life in class. She had said
'Draw exactly what you see'
Which is a very straight-forward thing to do when you're drawing still life but to me it was my first, most important thing I learned about art."

Nadistu got interested in art in sort of an odd way. He had entered an art contest when he was around 9 but got such a low rank it had discouraged him from doing art.

"The only things I could and enjoyed drawing back then were Dragons. I still like drawing Dragon's even now since it's a mythical creature and there are no rules about exactly what a Dragon should look like besides the general consensus that they should be 'lizard or reptilian-like' "

In fact, what motivated Nadistu into pursuing art specifically is figure drawing in Japanese anime. "I used to wake around 5:30am to watch early morning cartoon shows that only aired in the early morning. One of the shows I would watch was Sailor Moon. It was the first time I saw an anime (Japanese animation) and unlike most American cartoons the characters were drawn more 'realistically'.

'Monsters' and a talking cat aside, it didn't have cartoony humanoid creatures that acted like humans in the first few anime shows I watched...in comparison to the more popular cartoon characters at that time like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Pink Panther, etc. It just gave me a more 'grown-up' feeling."

Nadistu, inspired by the show and it's more "realistic" atmosphere, eventually started to mimic drawing the characters and was able to picck up the general style/proprtions, etc of how the characters were drawn. Over the years he picked up other different anime styles and mixed and improved them into each other. Meanwhile in school he took art classes whenever possible to improve other aspects of art.

"Even though I give all the credit to anime for teaching me how to draw figures, I admit I'm still pretty bad when I try to draw a landscape whether it' in relation to a figure or without one. I also still have some trouble drawing light and shadow on an object unless I actually shine a flashlight directly onto something. And color...well...I don't really believe what my mom says about my 'natural talent with color.' Then again, I don't usually color my pencil drawings because I consider them all "practice pieces", although if I manage to scan them in and if I find time...I sometimes play around with the color on the computer."

There is no doubt Nadistu possesses a unique talent. His middle school teacher was filled with enthusiasm when Nadistu told her he was interested in joining the art club. His high school painting teacher, upon seeing his first finished piece, was surprised to learn that he had never painted before. His friends marvel at hs ability to draw fairly proportionate human figures without use of guidelines, etc. and would agree on his possessing a, not always obvious, but strong passion to improve his skills.
